1 Peter 1:13-21

1) Write your own paraphrase of these verses…
2) What are the key theological ideas, points, propositions expressed in these verses?
Therefore - points back to Salvation
minds that are alert - gird the loins of you mind, protect or guard,
fully sober -
NIV is too passive, these are commands
you are receiving the salvation of your souls right now, but there is something more
central idea/command - be holy in all you do
obedience, not conforming
holiness - set apart, distinct from this world, because God is holy, holy is not a super category of good,
John 13 - love one another is the distinctive feature of our holiness, that which sets us apart
the holy live verses the empty life
tension - an outcome of holiness is right living
merely managing my behavior does not necessarily make me holy
right living is not just what I shouldn’t do, not just avoiding bad things but doing the right things that God has called me to do
Fear - God is judge, maybe more that just reverent fear,
holy and foreigner are both set apart - reverent fear in common
what is the connection to suffering ? between holy and suffering, we sometimes suffer because we are set apart (holy), and there is a holy way to suffer
if I am holy in all that I do - i can eliminate or at least lessen the suffering that is a result of my own sin
3) What background is necessary to understand this passage (historical or textual)?
4) How does this passage point to, support, or tie into the idea of overcoming suffering in this life?
5) What issue, problem, or question is Peter trying to address in the letter’s immediate context? How are we similar to those first readers (Uncovered Tension)
6) What is the ONE main point we should be highlighting?
- What do we want them to know, and why do we want them to know it?
- What do we want them to do, and why do we want them to do it?
