Romans 8:12–13 NIV

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

Life and Peace

Romans 8:6

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

Certainty of Life

Romans 8:11

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

Therefore

two verses summing up our response to the grace and mercy of Jesus

mercy because we do not deserve to be saved

grace because it has never been charged to our account

hence the term therefore at the start

let us pay particular attention to what needs to be heard and implemented

Brothers and Sisters

this is a call to us here today

brothers and sisters says family under one Father

there is a culture we all live in

traits that we all share

we are birthed through the death and life of Jesus Christ

Obligation

we made a confession of faith

this confession allowed us to be saved

yet there is a second component we cannot ignore

an obligation that comes with Jesus is Lord

Lord speaks of a submission to a higher authority

it is no longer our authority but that of Jesus

what was lost in the Garden as been returned by the Tomb

we willingly give our self determination up to take on the Lord

we are divinely obligated

Spirit Who Gives Life

we need the Spirit to fulfil this obligation

obvious that we cannot do so in our own strength

our actions betray our fleshy attempts to be holy

our attitudes limit our desire to do so

our will has been corrupted by sin

it is only the supernatural power of the Spirit that enables

only the Spirit gives life

Romans 8:13 NIV

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

Misdeeds of the Body

these are obvious to all, yet we are often blinded

we cannot continue to live in the old ways

we were in death so why go back

Colossians 3:5

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Colossians 3:8

But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

there is a Spirit inspired, Spirit motivated desire within us

the things of the flesh are dead

let us continually and with determination remove the flesh

there is a call today, in the world, for action for the truth

there is only one truth

there is a call to holiness we cannot ignore

be holy as I am holy - Leviticus 11:46

According to the Spirit

2 Timothy 1:7

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

we are weak in our natural being

so why do we continually try to work in that

Life

the Spirit will give life - verse 11

life is given as we are children of God
