do you have a plan
i have to have a plan
who knows what will happen tomorrow
only God
when man fell God had a plan and that is good news
Read Genesis 3
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all livestock
and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to your husband,
but he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.”
20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
The Problem
The Problem
Read Genesis 3:1-13
The world was good before this
God says it is good
Man and God living in perfect harmony
In perfect relationship with each other
There was no death no pain just man and women in the garden enjoying God forever
But over this idilic scene an ominous tone
And we open the scene with this serpent the most cunning of all the beast of the field
Who comes with questions
Who comes to deceive
Who comes to question God
And he finds his target
The pinnacle of God’s creation
The ones who God has given dominion over all the living things too
and here is the serpent the one the man is to have domion over there to tempt the man
“did God actually say”
A line that has been at the heart of man’s rebellion ever sense
and unfortunately we all to often respond as eve does
we add to what God said or we minimize it
And we open ourselves up to disobeying God
What did God say
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
What did Eve Say
3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
She adds a rule and satan knows he has her
She hasnt taken to heart what God said
She is vulnerable
Remeber when Jesus is tempted by satan what does he do responds with scripture verbatum nothing added nothing subtracted
Now Satan goes for the kill shot
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
no you will not die in fact you will be like God
God is hiding something from you
its really because he doesnt want you to be like him
This is a statement made to the one who is created in the image of God
It should have been so easy to refute
But Adam and Eve saw they could be like God and they desired that
They forgot God and looked to their own intrests
And here is where the problem comes
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
They ate and they saw their state
They saw it was good and that they might attain something they didnt have wisdom
They had all they need but they were tempted into wanting more
and the fell
and all of man kind with them
Watch the rest of this scene play out
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Who told you you were naked????????
A father who realizes something is wrong
the blame is shifted
a chasim is opened between God and man
and only God can fix that and he promises to do so
The Promise
The Promise
14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all livestock
and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
Notice when God speaks he speaks not of what we will do but what he will do
He will put emnity between the serpent and the women
and between her seed and the serpents
This isnt a general promise
This isnt women will not like snakes
God is making a larger statement here
He will put strife between statn and men
we will compete against each other
It will be a battle that at times will seem hopeless
but he promises something great
He promises the the seed of the women will bruise “or crush” the head of the serpent
He shall bruise the head of the serpent
He will overcome him
He will crush him
This offspring of the women wont do this without suffering however
The serpent will be able to reach out and bruise the heal of the offspring
The repairing of the relationship between God and man wont be accomplished for free
Their will be a fee
But the offspring will win out
Though his heal is bruised he will win
Though he be crucified on a cross
Though the serpent will think he wins
The offspring will rise again three days later
And at the end of the story he will return and bring new heaven and new earth and set right all the wrongs done by the serpent
This Promise is called the proto Gospel
This is the first Gospel
The procolamation of victory
The first time God will proclaim his victory in reconciling his creation back with him
God will set right what has gone wrong
This is the promise that he will step in at the right time and repair the broken relationship
Though this chasim is opened through the actions of Adam and Eve
It will be repaired by God
Though a curtiain will seperate God from his people for a time
HE will come and rip that curtain from top to bottom
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
This Chasim will be repaired by God through his son the offspring of the woman the one who will crush the head of the serpent
The Provision
The Provision
How do we know God will do this?
Look what he does for Adam and Eve
21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.
He provides for them new clothes
Remeber they were naked and tried to hide themselves
7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Man sins and man realizes they have a problem
what do they do
They try to fix it themselves
And God comes and they hide themselves
This is a tragedy
They were in perfect harmony yet the disobeyed and they try to cover themselves only to be found out quickly
There must be a punishment for sin
But God doesnt just leave themin there state
He gives them new clothes
Better ones
That he made
An animal is killed and clothes are made
They are given a new covering by God
at a cost they are covered
He provides clothes for them
He also provides relief for them
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—”
Death comes into this world
But what is death to a believer
gain
Gid in his gracious provision for us said man will not live forever on this earth
he will get an expiration date
and while it seems scary and terrible
it’s his grace for us
pidcock
God knew the problem and gave a promise and he will provide as he said he will
