Q4 What is God? A4 God is the only eternal Spirit, wholly holy, unchanging and entirely good and just
Spirit, John 4.24 ““God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.””
Holiness Revelation 4.8 “And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within, and day and night they do not cease to say, “HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is THE LORD GOD, THE ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME.””
Justice goodness and truth Exodus 34.6-7 “Then Yahweh passed by in front of him and called out, “Yahweh, Yahweh God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.””

230614: Q2 Where does God explain His purpose for people? A2 God Explains His Purpose For People In Scripture. Ps 19.7-11, 2 Tim 3.15-17
230621: Q3 What do the Scriptures teach? A3 The Scriptures teach what people are to believe (in Christ) and do (love God and our neighbor)
A couple of weeks ago we learned our purpose… Q1 What is the purpose of people?
A1 The purpose of people is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever!
Psalm 37.4 “Delight yourself in Yahweh; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”
Philippians 4.20 “Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”
Then last week we looked at our second question. Q2 Where does God explain His purpose for people?
A2 In His Scriptures!
Ps 19.7-11 “The law of Yahweh is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of Yahweh is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of Yahweh are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of Yahweh is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of Yahweh are true; they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, even more than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your slave is warned; In keeping them there is great reward.”
2 Tim 3.15-17 “and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
So now this week we are asking the next question…
(1) Next Question
Q3 So what do the Scriptures teach?
A3 The Scriptures teach what people are to believe and do
That makes sense right? The best instructions tell people how to do things they don’t ordinarily know how to do - Before we unpack this let’s have some definitions first.
(5) Definitions
I think we all know what it means to “do” something right? If I say, “do your homework” we know what that means. It means to act on, or take action. The Scriptures teach what people are to do - they also tell us what to believe. This one is bit trickier…
What about does it mean to believe in something? WAIT. Ask for examples
To believe in something is to completely trust in something. What do we have complete trust in? How about a chair or our bed? We place our whole body weight upon it and relax, we rest, we don’t sit half on half off. We don’t keep our feet under us in case the chair should collapse - we just sit in it don’t we? How about a parachute? When I jump out of a plane I didn’t flap my arms like a duck - I just sat in the parachute and waited
When we believe, when we have faith that means we completely trust that those things will be there, will do what they are supposed to do and we commit to them.
In the Scriptures, in the book of Hebrews we are told that believing or to have faith is to have assurance, conviction about something that we cannot necessarily see.
Hebrews 11.1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
You see, to believe in something is not to guess, or hope, or wish - it is to have a strong assurance about something.
(5) Development
So now we know what “belief” is right? Ok, y’all ready then? Ok, Question 3
Question 3 What do the Scriptures teach? The Scriptures teach what people are to believe and do
If the Scriptures tell us what to believe - what is IT that we are to BELIEVE? Does anyone know
John 3.16 ““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
RESTATE Because of God’s great love, He sacrificially gave His only Son, so that whoever completely trusts in Him shall not go to hell, but have eternal life - because of God’s great love. Well how does that work? It works like a parachute.
We don’t go to God and say, “look how great I am!” “Look how nice I am.” "Look how much better I am than the people around me.” That’s like flapping your arms like a duck. A lifetime of doing good can never outweigh our sins. One sin is enough to send us to hell. We need help. We trust Jesus like we trust a parachute. We understand that only Jesus is perfect and so we rely on His perfection and we depend entirely on it - not our own goodness.
Is everyone tracking what I am saying? Questions so far?
Ok, now let’s talk about what are people to do? When we believe in something it always proves itself in an action. If you believe in the parachute you put it on. If you believe in the chair you sit in it, right? So what do the Scriptures tell us we are to do?
Luke 10.27 “And he answered and said, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.””
We are told by Scriptures that we are to love God with every particle of our being. With our whole heart, with our entire soul, every ounce of strength and every thought - not only that we are to love others as much as we love ourselves.
Let’s ask our third question again
(4) Development:
Q3 What do the Scriptures teach? A3 The Scriptures teach what people are to believe and do
We are to believe in Christ and do love. Love God and love our neighbor.
You want to hear something fascinating.... The “love” that is mentioned here in Luke 10.27 is the same love that God has for us in John 3.16. Now, it needs to be said that the love that is being mentioned here isn’t a huggy/kissy kind of love, its not even a friendship kind of love. What kind of love is this? This is a sacrificial love, a giving up kind of love.
We are to believe that God sacrificially loves us, we are to believe that God loves us enough to send His Son Jesus to die for our sins so that whoever believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life
Similarly we are to do “love.” Because we have been loved we are to believe it and act on it - meaning that we are to love others - sacrificially.
(2) Repeat
So what people are to believe? What does Scripture tell us to believe? The Scriptures tell us to believe in Christ!
John 3.16 ““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
What people are to do - love God and love our neighbor
Luke 10.27 “And he answered and said, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.””
(8) Prove
Luke 10:25–37 | 25 And behold, a scholar of the Law stood up and was putting Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” WHAT DID WE JUST LEARN FROM JOHN 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered and said, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.” 29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. ASK WHAT JUST HAPPENED? ASK WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN?
31 “And a priest happened to be going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 “Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. ASK WHAT JUST HAPPENED? THESE ARE GUYS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO LOVE GOD BUT THEY PROVE THEY DONT KNOW OR LOVE GOD BY NOT LOVING OTHERS
33 “But a Samaritan, (PAUSE WHO ARE SAMARITANS?) who was on a journey, came upon him, and when he saw him, he felt compassion. 34 “And he came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them, and he put him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 “And on the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” 37 And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.”
