Weeks theme: creation.
Every lesson we will use a key word to think about a different aspect of God’s act of creating.
Review:
Lesson 1: FAITH- who’s word will you trust?
Lesson 2: GLORY- Creation is telling you something about God. God exists and He is GLORIOUS
Lesson 3: PURPOSE- God’s purpose in creating you is to honor, serve, and have fellowship with Him.
Lesson 4: BROKEN
If God’s purpose for us is to honor, serve, and fellowship with Him, then what happened that destroyed this perfect relationship?
Why are we broken?
Our Problem can be summed up in one word: SIN.
We choose to sin against God rather than serve Him.
What does it mean to sin against God?
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
Sin is LAWLESSNESS! It is a heart of rebellion.
Illustration: 6 boys, Seth learning to crawl- training him not to go on the kitchen floor. Even at that young age he would look at you, look at the floor, look at you, and then put one hand on the floor. Even at that young age he was testing you, he was rebelling against you. Why? Because of sin. Sin is lawlessness.
“No one is going to tell me what to do.”
Who is a sinner? Who has a lawless heart? Who has a rebellious heart?
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We all are sinners. We all rebel against God. And it all started back in the Garden of Eden.
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,
3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
Do you remember why God had created Adam and Eve? What was their purpose?
God created Adam and Eve to bear His image and likeness. Like little mirrors they were to reflect God’s glory and bring Him honor.
Now here in the Garden instead of honoring God, they doubted God’s goodness and they failed to trust Him. They listened to the voice of the snake and believed the lie that God was withholding what was best for them. Sin corrupted their purpose.
Not only did God create Adam and Eve to honor him, but also to serve Him. He gave Adam a command to follow.
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Adam was created to serve God, and Eve was made as Adam’s helper. They were to serve God by obeying Him. Instead they listened to the voice of Satan, that devilish snake and they disobeyed God. Instead of serving they became selfish and took the forbidden fruit.
Not only did God create them to honor and to serve, what was the last purpose God made them for? To FELLOWSHIP with God. To be God’s friend, to spend time with God, to have a close personal relationship with God. What happened to that fellowship once sin entered into the picture?
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
God used to come to the garden and walk and talk with Adam and Eve in the garden. And Adam and Eve used to delight to be in the presence of God and to have fellowship with God. But once sin entered into the picture what happened to that fellowship?
Adam and Eve were ashamed and they were afraid because they had rebelled against God and disobeyed. So what did they do? They hid themselves from the presence of God. This is what sin does to our fellowship with a holy God. It destroys it.
So now God’s very good creation was broken because of sin. And also because of sin God pronounced a curse upon the snake, upon Eve, and upon Adam.
Sin had entered into God’s good creation and with sin death also entered into God’s good creation.
God also had to cast out Adam and Eve from the garden and they became separated from God because of sin.
Video: Biggest Story Chapter 1
All the way back in Genesis 3 we discover that God’s creation is now cursed and corrupted because of sin. Creation is BROKEN because of sin.
Does that mean that you and I are broken?
Romans 5:12 (ESV)
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
Death entered the world through sin.
Because of Adam’s sin God cursed this broken creation. Because of sin death has entered into our world.
But, this death is not only talking about physical death. This death is also talking about a spiritual death—that is separation from God. Do you remember what God had to do to Adam after he sinned? He had to kick Adam out of the garden. Adam’s close fellowship with God was broken because of sin. Our fellowship with God is also broken because of sin. Unless we find a way to deal with this sin problem we can never have close fellowship with God. We can never have a relationship with God. If we don’t find a way to deal with this sin problem one day we will stand before God in judgement and we will be cast out of God’s presence permanently. That is what hell is for. The lake of fire is a place of eternal separation from God for those who still have sin.
Romans 5:12 (ESV)
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
2. Death and sin has spread to all of mankind.
Sin entered the world through Adam’s disobedience in the Garden. And because of sin death also entered into God’s creation. This corruption of sin and death has spread like a disease to every other person who has ever lived.
We are all sinners by birth. Did you know that? We are all born with a sinful nature. That sinful nature has spread to everyone of us like a disease all the way back to Adam.
3. All of us are also sinners by choice.
Romans 5:12 (ESV)
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
So you are born with a sinful nature, you are sinner by birth. But, you also choose to sin, you are sinners by choice. Every single one of us has sin in our life.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
We are sinners by birth, we are sinners by choice, and because of our sin we are separated from close fellowship with God. And ultimately that separation leads to death, eternal death where sinners are cast into hell, into the lake of fire, forever separated from God. That is the bad news.
But there is Good News!
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
In Genesis 3:15 God promises to send one will one day eventually crush the head of that devilish snake. God will send one will who provide a way to undo the corruption of sin. God will send one who will fix God’s broken creation. Including you and me.
