Weeks theme: creation.
Every lesson we will use a key word to think about a different aspect of God’s act of creating.
Review:
Lesson 1: FAITH- who’s word will you trust?
Lesson 2: GLORY
Psalm 19:1 ESV
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
The heavens declare the glory of God.
What heavens are we talking about? Sky, solar system, stars.
When you go outside tonight and look up at the stars (if there are no clouds), when you see the night sky in all of its beauty and wonder, that beautiful night sky is telling you something. They are telling you something about God?
What do the heavens tell us about God? They declare his glory.
What is glory?
Glory- is the idea of honor, respect, reputation of God.
The sky above proclaims his handywork.
The sky puts on display the handiwork of God.
What is handiwork?
Illustration: I love to build things. I have made, with my dad, bookshelves, computer desks, bunk beds, other furniture.
Just a few weeks ago my dad helped me put up a new basketball hoop for my kids. In order to put up the new hoop we had to dig a big hole in the ground, then we had to mix and pour lots and lots of concrete, then we had to set the mounting plate in the concrete and we had to make sure it was level and plumb, then we had to let it dry and set for five days, and then finally we got to install the poll, the backboard, and hoop, and the net.
It took us a whole week to install. Once we were finally done and the basketball net was installed, I took a few minutes to stand back and stare at all the work we had done. That work, is what we would call my handiwork. It felt good to see a nice straight and level hoop that my kids can play on for years to come. It felt good to stand back and say wow, that looks pretty good.
My handiwork however, is not really all that impressive. Most people could replicate what I did by installing their own hoop.
God’s handiwork is on a whole different level. Think of the most beautiful starry night sky you have ever seen. What did you say when you looked up into the sky and saw all those stars? WOW, that’s amazing!
The heavens, the sky above are speaking truth, they are telling you something, they are telling you something about God.
What are they saying? There is a God and He is GLORIOUS!
We can learn this about God from creation. We call this general revelation. What we learn about God from creation is called general revelation. Why do we call it GENERAL revelation?
Psalm 19:2 ESV
2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
Day after day the heavens speak, and night after night the heavens reveal knowledge. What do they speak about? What knowledge do they reveal?
God exists and He is GLORIOUS!
Psalm 19:3 ESV
3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.
What does this mean? How many of you struggle to understand me at times? How many of you struggle to understand my words? Maybe you don’t speak English as well as your native language. Maybe my accent is hard to understand.
That is not the case with the heavens.
Remember the heavens, the sky above is speaking to you, it is telling you something. It is telling you something about who? God!
What do the heavens say? God EXISTS and He is GLORIOUS.
Everyone can understand this message. It doesn’t matter what language you speak. It doesn’t matter what words you can or cannot understand. Everyone can understand at least something about God. How? By looking up at the sky. The message of the heavens is universal and unmistakable. God exists and He is GLORIOUS.
Psalm 19:4 ESV
4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,
The voice of the heavens goes everywhere. Even if you live in a remote part of South Africa, in the mountains where people don’t know very much about God, they still have received revelation about God. The heavens are speaking to them. They are saying something about God. What are they saying about God? God exists and He is GLORIOUS.
Psalm 19:5 ESV
5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Using a word picture for the sun. The sun when it rises in the morning is like groom on his wedding day or it is like an athletic man running a race.
Psalm 19:6 ESV
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
The sun rises and sets over all of God’s creation. Nothing is hidden from its heat. And therefore, every man, woman, and child has received some kind of revelation about God. Everyone is told a little bit about what God is like. The heavens, the creation, is speaking to everyone about God and what is it saying?
God exists and He is GLORIOUS.
Psalm 19:1 ESV
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
While we are talking about the heavens declaring God’s glory, I want to share with you some really cool verses that talk more about just how awesome He really is.
Isaiah 40:12 ESV
12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?
Psalm 147:4 ESV
4 He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names.
Psalm 147:5 ESV
5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
Job 38:31–33 ESV
31 “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loose the cords of Orion? 32 Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children? 33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule on the earth?
God is so awesome and glorious. And this is the message of the heavens.
Psalm 19:1 ESV
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
How are you going to respond to this truth from God’s Word?
Maybe you don’t know a lot about God or God’s Word. Maybe you have never been taught what God is like, you have never heard all of the wonderful truths that God wants you to know about Himself. There is one truth about God that you have received. There is one message about God that everyone is given. The heavens are telling you something about God- He exists and He is GLORIOUS.
How will you respond to this revelation? Will you welcome this truth about God? Will you accept his message, his revelation?
Luke 8:18 ESV
18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”
If you welcome this truth about God from creation, if you respond positively to the revelation you have already been given, then God will give you more. But if you reject this message about God He is under no obligation to reveal any more truth about Himself to you.
Respond positively! Welcome this message from the heavens. The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky shows His handiwork.
