Lets read the section together then we will dive in
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
this is a great section in the Bible.
with verses that may seem very familiar
as they are often quoted.
There is so many amazing points here
we can easily focus all of our time and attention
on the parts that talk about
Jesus equality with God
or on Jesus coming in appearance as a man
on every knee bowing
we can focus on every tongue confessing Jesus is Lord
but verse 5 tells us why this whole section is here.
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
The mind is often talked about
people want to better understand the mind
and people want to better understand their own mind
there is the study of the mind
with psychology
there are personality tests to help us better understand
the mind
there is so much advice
and healthy mind practices we can hear about
so many books about the mind
We all want to better our minds.
whether its because we want to sharpen it
or we feel like we are losing our minds
our minds are important
as famous 1800’s ministry Ralph Waldo Emerson
said "You are what you think all day long.”
A good question to ask our selfs
is what kinds of thoughts are often filling my mind?
are they honoring to God?
are they mostly positive, or negative
are they good
well here is verse 5
sitting there in the Word of God.
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
this word for mind comes from the same word
we saw in verse 2 in our last study
about unity through humility
for the word
to be like minded and one minded
which means our thoughts and our thinking
So we see here
to have the same thoughts of Jesus.
which that sounds a little tough
now doesnt it?
maybe you have heard people say that we are to
have the mind of Christ.
that sounds kinda hard.
Who can understand the mind of the Lord?
as 1 Cor 2:16 says
16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
wait what......
look at the last part of the verse here.
“but we have the mind of Christ”
so let this mind be in you which was in Christ
and as we see in this other scripture
which we have!
Well I think I am not just interested in
having this mind
but I need this mind!
the mind that thinks like the one who
is the form of God
equal to God
to think like the one with
a name above every name
who every knee will bow to
who every tongue will confess is Lord
thats the mind to have
thats the mind we do have
and thats mind described in our verses today.
in verse 6 it will reveal His greatness
then our text will show His great acts
that will lead Him
to have everyone bowing down to Him
and confess He is Lord
and have a name above every name.
lets look at verse 6
6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,
3 things about our Jesus here.
1. He is in the form of God
2. He is equal with God
3. He did not consider it robbery to be equal with God
This in english make it clear that Jesus is God
and the greek language makes that even more clear
“the form” of God - is Morphe’
Morphe contrasts with "schema" (Phil 2:8)
which schema denotes the outward
which changes from time to time
and from circumstance to circumstance.
No one could be in the form (morphe) of God who was not God.
Morphe is the essential form which never alters
it contrast with the similar word schema
that describes the outward form
which changes from time to time and from circumstance to circumstance.
so no one could be in the form (morphe) of God who was not God.
it also says that He is equal with God
The Word for equal here in original language means
the same as, equivalent , copy.
22 Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
Jesus is not like God… no one is like God
Jesus is God
and lastly He did not consider it robbery
to be equal with God
the word robbery here
also means something to be grasped
so He didn't consider His equality with God
to be something grasped
When Jesus was tempted by satan in the wilderness
He didnt try to grasp onto His
authority by removing Satan
When Jesus was on earth
He wasnt grasping for His
diety
He instead got hungry,
He got tired,
He got sad
He didnt make His life easier,
and without pain.
When He was on the cross
He didn't try to grasp His power
to smite His persecutors
He didnt take His equality with God
something He could
take for Himself.
while I doubt that is something any one of us would do
our amazing Jesus took it a step further.
lets read verse 7
7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
So Jesus,
didnt just take His equality with God as something to grasp
He also made Himself of no reputation....
to render void, to empty out, to drain
This does not mean that Jesus
didnt make Himself not God
He didnt subtract His diety
He as fully God became fully man
as the verse continues
to say by taking the form of a bondservant.
Jesus, being God, “emptied Himself”
by adding humanity
It was emptying by addition
not by subtracting who He is
9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
So He made Himself of no reputation by taking
on humanity
now lets not
miss out of the great act
and gift to mankind this is!
to be thankful to God
for coming to us
He did this because
He loves us that much
and not only did He make
Himself of no reputation
He takes it even further
and it says in verse 7 that He
took the form of a bonderservant.
that word “form” is the same word
for form in that
“being in the form of God”
to the selfish, self seeking,
focused on elevation of status
type of mindset mankind has
this is a sticking contrast
the form of God
taking the form of bond servant
a word for slave
He is love
He serves.
no religions god is a slave.
not even in a comic
does a god become a slave
but here we Him
taking the form of a bondservant
a slave
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
and here is a spot for us to remember
that this is the mindset for us to have.
our thoughts shouldn't be
about what we can gain
its about what we can give
To share the thought of Christ
the mind of Christ
is to not make it about self
its not to rise to power
to keep climbing a status ladder
it is to serve
35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
Who are we to think
anything of ourselves
When Jesus who is God
didn't take His equality with God
something to be grasped
and became a bondservant.
how did He become a bondservant?
the last part of verse 7 tells us
“by coming the in likeness of men”
this speaks of His birth
born in a manger
to a poor family
wrapped in swaddling cloths
to be kept warm.
its like He keeps stepping down the
rungs of the ladder to reach us
no slide
"The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God." - C.S. Lewis
as … says
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.
verse 8 continues the thought
and shows that Jesus didn't stop there
8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
first we see He was found in appearance as a man.
there isnt much to find of His appearance
the last part of .. says
Isaiah 53:2 (NKJV)
2 .... And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
the point is that Jesus looked like an ordinary man.
He didnt have some special beauty or some halo
He looked like any other guy you would just walk passed.
which just blows my mind
thinking
that if i lived in those days
I could have just walked right by Him.
Jesus didnt come with a
look at how great I am
He didnt come taking the greatest human
looks
He wasnt about the things we could
so easily be consumed by
His appearance, His entranced to this world
was not some grand display
with the king adorned in beauty
it was like common man
and
He didnt stop there but
it says next in verse 8
he also humbled Himself
which is amazing
because He is the only one
truley worthy to exalt Himself
to be prideful
yet we see Him humble.
a verse that displays His humility so well is
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
if all things were given in your hands,
would you wash someones feet?
men would you wash some other dudes feet?
what about if we knew that
we would soon be going to God
would we was someones feet?
most likely it would be spent doing all that we want.
Jesus served...
Think if Jesus was physcially here with us at church
what would He be doing?
No doubt ministering
but we would also likely doing the things
we have been refusing to do
and not wanting to do.
lets again be reminded of this sections
point that are to have
the same mind that is
in Christ.
Like Jesus, may we embrace humility
and willingly serve others
because its not about us
or self
God has called us together for bigger purposes.
not to try to see what we can gain from each other
but how we can give to one another.
Jesus who is worthy of it all
humbled Himself
and He didn't stop there
but He also obeyed
Jesus said in John 6:38
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Jesus lived to do what God wants.
obedience isnt just not sinning
but it is also doing what He calls you to do
We all have a calling
we have a general calling we all share
and we have specific calling
if you dont know your specific calling then
do the general calling we all have
to serve, to love, to make disciples,
to edify the body of Christ.
Jesus obeyed and did the will of God
and
He didn't stop there but He obeyed up to death
He reminded committed to what God wanted.
all the way to death
He gave and gave OF His life for us
and He then gave it all
by giving His whole life for us
so He obeyed unto death
but
He didnt stop there
it emphasis even death of the cross
this is emphasized for
how horrific His death was
the cross was designed to
maximize suffering, prolong agony,
and publicly humiliate
Church Jesus didn't stop
He gave, He gave He gave
He did not stop
by not grasping on to His diety
He did not stop there
He made Himself of no reputation
then He didnt stop there He took the form of slave
then He did stop there and He came to this world as a man
and He humbled Himself
and He remained obedient
and He didnt stop
until He died
giving His life for us!
by death of the cross
I think Paul here was awe struck
at His humility here
like I hope we all are
He didnt stop giving
of Himself
and He also gave us His whole self.
by dying for us.
and when He did!
we see Jesus
get all that He deserves
that we read about in verses 9-11
I believe these verses are meant to make
us happy to see Jesus get what He
truly deserves
not the cross, but a crown
I think Paul in prison joyfully wrote this!
Lets see all that our humble servant and God Jesus
receives!
start at verse 9
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
God has highly exalted Him
Yes Jesus
who gave so much
finally gets to receive!
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
Jesus for all He gave
wont just be lifted up
but lifted up above all
as we see in the next part of verse 9 that...
2. He receives the name which is above every name
10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
the name in the days of the Bible
the name spoke to who the person is
so this shows that He is above all
sometimes the name would literally
speak of who that person is
for example Adam the first man His name means man
Abraham’s name means father of many
Moses - drawn out
Jesus name mean - YHWH (God) is salvation
this name is true to Who He is
and it is a gift
that His name is above every name
no other name can save
no other name can we pray by
by His name demons can be cast out (Mark 16:17)
by His name we can pray healing of the sick (jas 5.14)
His name is above every name
and if we dont realize it now we will later
because as verses 10 and 11 says:
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
not at a name
at the name of Jesus
Whether in heaven, on earth or in hell! All will bow!
Spurgeon said this about this verse:
Look at Him! Can your imagination picture Him? Behold His transcendent glory! The majesty of kings is swallowed up; the pomp of empires dissolves like the white mist of the morning before the sun; the brightness of assembled armies is eclipsed. He in Himself is brighter than the sun, more terrible than armies with banners. In heaven, in earth, in hell, all knees bend before Him, and every tongue confesses that He is God. If not now, yet in the time that is to come this shall be carried out, that every creature of God’s making shall acknowledge His Son to be “God over all, blessed forever. Amen” - Spurgeon
better for us to bow down now.
and confess He is Lord now
Jesus as we see here is highly exalted
because He humble gave, and obeyed, and served.
remember this passage is here to
show us the mind of Christ
we have
BREAK DOWN THE POINTS FROM JESUS
AND MAKE IT INTO HOW WE ARE TO HAVE THAT MIND
serve others
humble
do our calling
as He will work in us
to be humble,
to not be after our gain
to serve,
to obey
and to be humble.
