John 16:5–15 CSB
5 But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: 9 About sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father has is mine. This is why I told you that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you.

The Spirit is for our benefit

v7
That word translated as “counselor” means that the Holy Spirit is our helper, our advocate. He’s called our guide.
Think about Jesus saying it is better that He leaves so He can send us the Spirit.
Pastor JD Greear once described it like this…

The Spirit convicts

v8

About sin, v9

People have to realize they are sinners before they will turn to God.

About righteousness, v10

People need to understand that we are supposed to live righteously as Jesus did.
Ezekiel 36:26–27 CSB
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances.

About judgement, v11

People need to understand that Satan, who calls us to pursue sin and ignore righteousness, has been found guilty and sentenced!

The Spirit is our teacher

vv12-15
1 Corinthians 2:10–13 CSB
Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, since the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except his spirit within him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God. We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people.

So how do we take advantage of this help?

God has revealed Himself and his will in his Word and given us the Spirit to give us understanding, but if we don’t ever get in the Word then we miss this benefit.
The Holy Spirit speaks to us in prayer and speaks for us in prayer… , but if we never pray, we miss this benefit.
The Holy Spirit gives us the words we need when stand up for Jesus…
Luke 12:11–12 ESV
And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
but if we never take a stand for Jesus then we lose this benefit.
