Introduction

Weaponized Scripture.
The one swinging the Bible rarely engages in introspection.
Part of our job as interpreters of the Bible is to strip away what it doesn’t say.
Part of our job here, get to the pure message.
As Paul points us to the basis of a happy home.

Let your marriage represent the Gospel.

v. 22
Connection to v. 21 (mutual submission) because there is no verb in the text.
Specific to “own husband.” Not a blanket statement for a woman to submit to any man.
“…as to the Lord.” Relationship of believer to Jesus.
All aspects of life are connected and affected.
Decisions are made with your spouse.
God has gifted women with intuition. Decisions are always better when made in concert with Vanessa.

The husband is commanded to benefit the wife.

v. 23
What does it mean to be the “head” of something?
Christ as head of the church.
Ephesians 1:22 ESV
22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,
Ephesians 4:15 ESV
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
Source? Of what?
The head holds responsibility for the body.
The head of an organization has a responsibility to see profits, vision, growth, etc…
Fails when they seek their own benefit. [CEO Failure??]
Mark 10:45 ESV
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Where Jesus sets the example.

The wife is to prioritize her husband.

v. 24
Submission provides order.
Submission does not decrease one’s value.
1 Corinthians 15:28 ESV
28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.
“Submission is nothing more than a decision about the relative worth of others.”
Kyle Snodgrass
“In everything...” Reminder that we are one flesh.
Genesis 2:24 ESV
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
There is an unsevered connection.

Conclusion

Happiness is preceded by submission.
People looking for superiority, authority, or prominence are consistently unhappy.
We can find ourselves joyful by serving others.
Especially our spouse.
