THE ANOINTING!
1 John 2:20 But YOU have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know!
As we learn to Know the Father and The Son, the role of the Holy Spirit is foundational to our spiritual growth!
As the Holy Spirit came upon John to write these words, we learn that John was concerned about;
The Absence of Joy among his audience—The Prevalence of Sin among his audience and today I want you to notice his concern about—The Distortion of Truth among his audience!
1 John 2:26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you!
What was John’s audience in danger of being deceived about?
1 John 2:27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you;
but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true, and is not a lie, as it has taught you, you abide in Him!
What Is The Anointing and how does it operate in our life?
The Anointing Can Be Described as:
I. The PRESENCE of God Recognized IN You!
1 John 2:20 But YOU have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know!
1 John 2:27 As for YOU, the anointing which YOU received from Him abides IN YOU!
The Presence of God can be recognized IN you by OTHERS and can be recognized IN you by YOU!
The anointing is UNIVERSAL among ALL Believers but the anointing is UNIQUE to each Believer!
1 Cor 12: 7 But to EACH ONE is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good! 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills . . .
So far we understand the Anointing to be the Presence of God IN you, but there is more!
The Anointing can also be understood as:
II. The POWER of God Released THROUGH You!
1 John 2:27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you!
The anointing is the POWER of the Holy Spirit! There is no better definition in the world!
Let’s see if we can glean any insights from the word John uses for anointing!
The word John uses for anointing is CHARISMA and it only appears in 1 John 2:20, 27 But you have an anointing or CHARISMA . . . As for you, the anointing or CHARISMA which you received from Him abides IN you!
The Anointing is Presence and Power of the Holy Spirit operating in and through you!
The Holy Spirit is your anointing and or your gifting. The Gift functions easily when it’s working
The anointing is always there but it is not always functioning easily!
What’s the key that unlocks the anointing, the Charisma inside of you?
The Anointing can be understood as The Presence and Power of God in and through you and it is:
III. The PROMISE of God Received BY You!
Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ . . . and you will receive the GIFT of the Holy Spirit!
Acts 2:39 For the PROMISE is for YOU and your children and for all who are far off!
Notice the order of events the Apostle Peter reveals for us: Repent means to change your thinking and behavior!
Be baptized means to be obedient and then you must RECEIVE the GIFT of the Holy Spirit!
Notice also, the Gift of the Holy Spirit is a PROMISE but the promise will not benefit you until you RECEIVE it!
The Holy Spirit is the GIFT and He is resident in your human spirit and His personality and presence will manifest in and through you and this is how you initially begin to recognize His Presence and release His Power:
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
The frightening thing and heart-breaking thing is that it is possible for us to hinder the Holy Spirit from BEING Himself and or DOING things He desires to do in and through us!
Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption!
To Grieve means to cause pain or sorrow. It is the opposite of joy!
1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit!
To Quench means to put out, as in to extinguish, or it can mean to silence or to shut up someone or some thing.
So, if we do not see the Holy Spirit’s personality manifesting in and through our life with Power we need to ask Him why isn’t He manifesting His personality in and through us?
There are two major things we must choose to do at some point in our life:
Develop the sensitivity OF the Holy Spirit!
Develop the sensitivity TO the Holy Spirit!
