Good morning! It is with deep gratitude and joy that I stand here today. I want to express my sincere appreciation to Pastor Dan and the entire leadership team for extending this gracious invitation to share God's Word with you.
As I was preparing todays message, I had the picture come to my mind. It is of a weary traveler on a long and challenging journey. Imagine a person who has been on the road for days, their body worn out, their soul yearning for rest. The sun beats down relentlessly, and every step feels heavier than the last. This traveler desperately seeks a place of rest, a sanctuary where weariness can be replaced with rejuvenation.
Today, I want to share with you the message of Psalm 23—a psalm that speaks to the depths of our human experience and our longing for rest and restoration. But before we get there, I would like to share a personal story, a testimony of how the rest and restoration offered by the Good Shepherd became a reality in my own life.
Many years ago, my life took an unexpected turn—a tragedy that forever changed the course of my journey. On a fateful day on July 16 2000, I lost my brother to suicide. The pain and grief that followed were unimaginable, leaving me questioning the meaning and purpose of life itself. It was during this dark and desperate season that I encountered the Good Shepherd, who lovingly beckoned me to find solace and strength in His presence.
(At this point, you can share a brief moment of silence or pause to allow the weight of your words to settle among the congregation.)
My journey to faith and pastoral ministry began in the wake of that heartbreaking loss. As I sought answers, healing, and restoration, I discovered the transformative power of the Good Shepherd's love and care. In the midst of my pain, He became my oasis of rest—a place where my weary soul found solace, my broken spirit found healing, and my troubled mind found peace.
As I reflect on the journey that brought me to this very place today, I am reminded of the profound truth expressed in the opening verse of Psalm 23. David, the shepherd-turned-king, beautifully captures the essence of our human longing for guidance and direction in the arms of the Good Shepherd.
Just as the weary traveler seeks an oasis amidst the barren desert, our souls yearn for a guiding presence that can lead us through the complexities of life. In verse one, David proclaims,
Psalm 23:1 ESV
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Listen these words are not merely poetic expressions, but a powerful declaration of faith. They reveal the deep trust David had in his relationship with God—the One who guides, provides, and satisfies. Today, I invite you to join me on a journey through Psalm 23 as we discover the oasis of God's guidance, a place where our deepest longings find fulfillment and our weary hearts find rest.
This is such a powerful declaration by David 'The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.'
These words hold a deep meaning that resonates throughout the first four verses of this psalm—a meaning that speaks to the nourishment and refreshment we find in God's guiding presence.
In the ancient Near Eastern context, the metaphor of a shepherd was often associated with kingship. Just as earthly kings acted as shepherds, providing protection and administering justice, the psalmist acknowledges that Yahweh, the covenant-keeping God, is our Shepherd. This understanding becomes even more significant when we consider the connection to King David, who personally experienced the role of a shepherd.
When David proclaims, 'I shall not be in want,' he is expressing that those who trust in Yahweh, like sheep trust their shepherd, will never lack what they truly need. It's not about having all our desires fulfilled, but about finding contentment and lacking nothing essential. Our Shepherd provides abundantly for His trusting people.
In a world that often tells us we don't have enough, where our desires constantly outweigh our needs, the Good Shepherd offers a different reality. He leads us to an oasis of provision and sustenance, where our deepest longings find satisfaction.
In verse two we read.
Psalm 23:2 ESV
He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
The mention of green pastures, or grassy meadows, reminds us of the shepherd's thoughtful consideration for his flock. Unlike a hireling who may be indifferent, the shepherd thinks and observes with his flock's well-being in mind. It's as if the shepherd and the flock share a mutual understanding, a bond forged through attentiveness and care. Just as a loving father thinks and feels as a family man, our Shepherd has chosen to be intimately connected with us, His flock.
Imagine for a moment the tranquility and nourishment of a green pasture. It's a place where the sheep can graze, find sustenance, and experience rest. Our Shepherd leads us to these peaceful havens, guiding us to places of refreshment and abundance. In His care, we are not left wanting, for He knows our needs intimately.
Likewise, the mention of calm waters evokes a sense of serenity and peace. Just as the wandering Israelites sought a resting place, a sanctuary in the midst of their journey, our Shepherd leads us to waters where we can find solace and rejuvenation. These calm waters represent His ability to quench our spiritual thirst and revitalize our weary souls.
Consider the profound implications of this imagery. Our Shepherd, in His love and wisdom, provides us with not only physical nourishment but also spiritual rest. In the hustle and bustle of life, where chaos and uncertainty often times seem to prevail, we can find respite and rejuvenation in the green pastures and calm waters of His presence.
As we ponder these words, let us remember that our Shepherd desires a deep connection with His flock. He longs to guide us, to nourish us, and to provide for our every need.
Then in verse three we read.
Psalm 23:3 ESV
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
In this verse, we find the powerful imagery of God restoring our souls and guiding us in paths of righteousness, just as a shepherd tends to his sheep.
The expression 'He restores my soul' carries rich layers of meaning. It portrays a shepherd diligently retrieving a straying sheep and bringing it back to the fold. It speaks of a compassionate God who seeks after us when we wander, tenderly restoring and renewing our lives. But there's more to it. The Hebrew word used here can also be translated as 'repent' or 'be converted.' It suggests a spiritual renewal, a transformation that goes beyond mere refreshment. It points to a deep inner restoration, a reviving of our souls.
In our journey through life, we often experience spiritual waywardness and soul weariness. We may find ourselves straying from the paths of righteousness, feeling lost and burdened. But our faithful Shepherd is there, ready to restore us, to bring us back to Himself. He doesn't abandon us in our wanderings; instead, He seeks us out with love and compassion.
Furthermore, the paths of righteousness mentioned in this verse hold both a literal and moral significance. For the sheep, these paths are the right way to travel, avoiding danger and reaching places of safety and provision. Similarly, for us, these paths of righteousness entail following God's commands and living in alignment with His will. Our Shepherd leads us on these paths, guiding us toward a life that honors Him and brings glory to His name.
As we reflect on this imagery, we see the intertwining of our Shepherd's care for our souls and His desire for our moral righteousness. He is not only concerned about our spiritual well-being but also about our conduct in the world. His restoration brings about a transformation that enables us to walk in His ways, to live lives that reflect His character and values.

Rest and Restoration in the Shade of the Shepherd

Imagine the weary traveler, having found the oasis after a long and arduous journey. They seek refuge from the scorching sun, and what do they find? A serene haven, shaded by lush, green trees. They rest, finding solace and respite in the coolness of the shade. In a similar way, our souls find rest and restoration in the presence of our Good Shepherd.
When we draw near to God, seeking His presence, we are invited into the shade of His loving care. It is in His presence that we find true solace, peace, and restoration. He wraps His arms of comfort around us, shielding us from the scorching heat of life's trials and tribulations. In the shadow of His love, we discover a place of refuge, where our weary souls are refreshed and renewed.
While I was in seminary I focused all of my elective classes in our counseling department. Probably, because I was deeply afraid to have to counsel someone or couples. Throughout my studies and my time counseling, I have come to realize the incredible healing and restoration that is available through a deep and intimate relationship with God. As we allow Him into the deepest recesses of our hearts, He brings healing to our brokenness, comfort to our pain, and restoration to our wounded souls.
The rest and restoration we find in the shade of the Shepherd go hand in hand with the healing and restoration available through a deep relationship with God. As we pour out our hearts to Him, sharing our hurts, our struggles, and our pain, He listens with compassionate understanding. He guides us through the valleys, bringing light to our darkest moments and leading us toward the path of healing.
In the shade of the Shepherd, we experience the transformation of our wounded souls into vessels of His grace and love. He mends our brokenness, strengthens our weaknesses, and empowers us to walk in wholeness and freedom. As we open ourselves to His healing touch, we become living testimonies of His restoring power.
Then in verse four we read.
Psalm 23:4 ESV
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
The psalmist paints a vivid picture of a dark valley—a ravine—that we may encounter on our life's journey. It is important to note that this valley, like the green pastures, is one of the Shepherd's 'right paths.' Even in the midst of our trials and hardships, we can find solace in knowing that our Shepherd is with us, guiding us through every step of the way.
In this dark valley, the psalmist acknowledges the presence of fear. It is a natural response to the unknown and the challenges we face. Yet, the psalmist reminds us that the shadow of death, that darkest and most formidable specter, loses its power in the presence of our Shepherd. His light overcomes the darkness, providing strength, comfort, and hope.
The Hebrew word used here which the ESV rightly translates as 'shadow of death,' appears throughout the Old Testament, often referring to darkness and death itself. It signifies the most perilous and daunting of circumstances. In our lives, this may represent not only the finality of physical death but also the various crises and tribulations we encounter.
As we consider the meaning of verse four, we find ourselves addressing the Shepherd directly. David uses a personal and intimate address in Hebrew, “You” are with me. This signifies His close presence with us in times of danger. He is no longer ahead, leading the way, but right beside us, offering companionship and protection. In times of need, His presence brings great comfort and reassurance.
The psalmist introduces two powerful symbols: the rod and the staff. The rod, a cudgel worn at the belt, serves as a defensive weapon for the shepherd, protecting the flock from predators. The staff, on the other hand, serves as an implement of control and guidance, helping to round up and direct the sheep.
In a deeper sense, we see these symbols as representing the strength and care of our Shepherd. In times of challenges and trials, He defends us against the attacks of the enemy, shielding us from harm. His rod brings forth a sense of security and protection.
The staff, on the other hand, signifies His gentle discipline and guidance. Just as a shepherd uses the staff to guide and correct the sheep, our Shepherd walks beside us, leading us through the darkness and ensuring our safety. His discipline is not meant to harm us but to keep us on the right path and bring us closer to Him.
In the face of death and life's greatest challenges, it is the Lord alone who can lead us through. While other guides may turn back, He remains steadfast by our side. In His presence, we find strength, comfort, and the assurance that we are not alone on our journey.
We should draw strength from these words. Even when faced with the darkest valleys of life, we can find solace and courage in the presence of our Shepherd. He walks with us, His rod and staff providing protection and guidance.
The imagery now shifts from that of a shepherd to a picture of even greater intimacy and abundance. It is essential to recognize that the transition from the shepherd metaphor to this new imagery serves a specific purpose.
In verse five, we are presented with a scene of triumph and celebration. We read.
Psalm 23:5 ESV
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
The psalmist portrays a well-set table, a feast prepared for us by our Shepherd. The details speak of abundance and overflowing goodness. The table is not just filled, but meticulously prepared, ensuring that our every need is met. It is a display of divine provision and hospitality.
As we consider the festive oil and the brimming cup, we are reminded of the rich symbolism within these images. The festive oil, associated with anointing, represents honor, consecration, and blessing. It is a symbol of God's favor and empowerment upon our lives. The brimming cup symbolizes satisfaction, joy, and fulfillment. It speaks of God's abundant blessings, pouring out beyond measure.
This scene of a well-set table and a brimming cup invites us to contemplate the depth of God's goodness and grace. It is a testament to His infinite resources, even in the midst of the worst situations. Just as the psalmist found solace and triumph in the presence of the Shepherd, we too can experience the assurance of victory in our lives.
While Scripture never trivializes or underestimates the reality of our enemies and challenges, it also reveals the power and sovereignty of our God. This verse hints at a victorious celebration, where our enemies are defeated and forced to witness the triumph of the Lord's chosen ones. It may also allude to a feast of accession, where defeated rivals are reluctantly present as guests.
Listen, in times of trials and challenges, We must never lose sight of the abundance and victory that await us in the presence of our Shepherd. He sets a table before us, offering sustenance and provision. His anointing empowers us, and His overflowing blessings satisfy our deepest longings.
As we navigate life's challenges, we need to hold fast to the assurance that our Shepherd is with us, leading us in triumph. We can find strength and comfort amidst the darkest valleys, knowing that our God prepares a feast of victory in the presence of our enemies.
In verses four and five of, we witness the profound reality of finding strength and comfort in the watchful presence of our Shepherd, even in the midst of life's most challenging circumstances. The imagery presented to us paints a picture of unwavering protection and guidance that sustains us through every trial.
As we reflect on verse four, we are reminded of the dark valleys or ravines that we may encounter on our journey. These valleys represent times of difficulty, uncertainty, and even the shadow of death. Yet, in the midst of these daunting challenges, we find solace in knowing that our Shepherd is right there with us.
The presence of our Shepherd overcomes the fear that can grip our hearts. Just as a traveler finds comfort under the shade of trees at an oasis, we find refuge and strength in the unfailing presence of our God. His rod and staff, symbols of guidance and protection, assure us that we are never alone. The rod defends us from harm, while the staff gently directs us along the right path. In trusting the Shepherd's guidance, we discover a profound sense of security and peace.
This imagery of the shepherd's staff holds a significant lesson for us. It reveals the importance of trusting in God's guidance and protection. Just as the traveler relies on the shepherd's staff to navigate treacherous terrain and find the way to safety, we too must trust in the divine guidance bestowed upon us. Our Good Shepherd knows the path that leads to restoration and fulfillment. He leads us beside still waters and onto paths of righteousness.
Trusting in God's guidance may not always be easy, especially when the path before us seems uncertain or challenging. Yet, it is precisely in those moments that we need to lean on our faith and surrender our fears. The Shepherd's staff assures us that we are not left to wander aimlessly or face life's trials alone. He is our constant companion, guiding us with wisdom and love.
We need to embrace the truth that even in the darkest valleys, our Shepherd is present. We must find strength and comfort in His watchful gaze and follow the guidance of His staff. As we trust in God's guidance and protection, we will experience His unwavering love, leading us to places of strength, restoration, and triumph.
In verse six, we are presented with a glimpse of the oasis of hope and future restoration that awaits those who trust in the Lord. It surpasses any earthly feast or gathering, for it represents a bond of mutual loyalty, a covenant sealed at God's table. To be a guest at God's table is to be welcomed into a lifelong relationship, an intimate communion with the Almighty. We read.
Psalm 23:6 ESV
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
In the Old Testament context, partaking in a meal together signified a deep bond and covenantal commitment. We see this in the account of Moses and the elders of Israel in Exodus 24:8-12, where they beheld God, ate, and drank, solidifying their relationship. Similarly, at the Last Supper, Jesus declared, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood' (1 Corinthians 11:25). Thus, being invited to God's table signifies more than a temporary visit; it signifies dwelling with Him, living in His presence.
While there may be a sense of pilgrimage in the imagery of progressing toward the house of the Lord, it also portrays a journey homeward. David, a man of affairs, considered the courts of the Lord his true home, as expressed in Psalm 27:4 and 65:4. It speaks to the deep longing within us to find our ultimate dwelling place in the presence of our Creator.
The Lord's mercy, often translated as 'steadfast love,' and goodness encompass the attributes of unwavering kindness, support, and faithfulness that one can rely on in the context of a family or between very close friends. God's love and care are not only solid and dependable but also vibrant and active. Just as His judgments pursue the wicked, His love and goodness pursue us, encompassing us with His relentless grace.
The psalmist declares that this divine covenant extends 'all the days of my life,' signifying an enduring commitment from God. While the original expression does not explicitly refer to eternity, the logic of God's covenant allows no ending to His love and faithfulness towards His people. As followers of Christ, we understand that nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39). His covenantal bond transcends time and space, offering us eternal security and restoration.
We need to take hold of this oasis of hope and future restoration found in the presence of our Good Shepherd. As we dwell in His love, we can trust that His steadfast love and goodness will pursue us all the days of our lives. The covenant He has established with us is unbreakable, and His commitment to our well-being extends beyond the boundaries of this earthly existence. In the embrace of His eternal love, we find true fulfillment, restoration, and a hope that endures for all eternity.
As the weary traveler arrives at the oasis, they find respite under the shade of the towering palm trees. The air is thick with the scent of blooming flowers, and the soothing sound of a nearby stream fills the atmosphere. The traveler, having endured the hardships of their journey, sits on a soft patch of grass, taking in the scene before them.
As they gaze into the distance, their eyes fixate on the horizon, where the sun begins its gentle descent, casting a warm, golden glow over the landscape. In that moment, the traveler's heart is stirred with a deep sense of peace and serenity.
In the oasis, surrounded by the oasis's abundant provision, the traveler's gaze extends beyond the present moment. They lift their eyes to the vast expanse of the sky, adorned with countless twinkling stars. It is in this transcendent moment that their perspective shifts, and they find hope.
They reflect on the challenges they have faced, the valleys they have walked through, and the trials that have tested their faith. Yet, in the oasis's tranquil embrace, they realize that their present circumstances are not the end of their journey. They find solace in the promise of future restoration, knowing that the Good Shepherd is leading them towards ultimate renewal and abundant life.
In the midst of their weariness, the traveler's eyes light up with a newfound sense of hope. They recognize that the oasis is not merely a temporary refuge, but a glimpse of the eternal dwelling place prepared for them by the Shepherd. It becomes a tangible reminder that their struggles are not in vain, for God's steadfast love and goodness will guide them through every season, sustaining them until they reach their ultimate home.
With renewed strength and a heart filled with anticipation, the traveler rises from their resting place at the oasis. They continue their journey, not just with physical determination, but with a deep-rooted hope that carries them forward. The oasis remains etched in their memory, a constant reminder that even amidst life's challenges, there is a promise of restoration, and a future filled with the abundant blessings of the Good Shepherd.
I pray that we too find ourselves like the traveler at the oasis, looking beyond the present moment, and finding hope in the promise of future restoration. I pray that we draw strength from the knowledge that our Shepherd is leading us on a journey that ultimately leads to eternal peace, joy, and restoration in His loving presence.

So What?

Whenever I approach the end of our time together I always like to ask the question. “So What?” This is when I try to bridge the gap between the ancient shepherd imagery and our contemporary lives. I want to try to make the message relevant and impactful for each of us.
The first point I want to look at is embracing the rest, guidance, and provision of the Good Shepherd.

Embracing the Rest, Guidance, and Provision of the Good Shepherd.

We recognize that our journeys through life are unique, shaped by the complexities and demands of our modern world. However, in the metaphor of the weary traveler finding solace and strength in the rest, guidance, and provision of the Good Shepherd, we discover profound insights that can offer solace and strength in times of difficulty.
In the hustle and bustle of our fast-paced lives, many of us are burdened with weariness and fatigue. The pressures of work, relationships, and societal expectations can leave us feeling overwhelmed and depleted. However, the Good Shepherd invites us to find rest in His presence. In the stillness of prayer, meditation, and intentional Sabbath rest, we can experience His rejuvenating peace. We need to encourage one another to prioritize self-care, to carve out moments of respite, and to seek God's restorative rest, knowing that in His arms, we find solace and renewal.
Our cultural presents us with numerous choices, decisions, and uncertainties. We often find ourselves at crossroads, unsure of which path to take. Yet, the Good Shepherd offers His unwavering guidance. As we encounter the challenges of decision-making and navigating life's complexities, let us turn to His Word, seeking His wisdom and discernment. In prayerful dependence, we invite His Spirit to lead us, trusting that He will illuminate the right path before us. Again, we need to encourage a culture of seeking God's guidance and supporting one another in our quest for His will.
Economic hardships, relational conflicts, and personal setbacks are prevalent struggles in our world. We may find ourselves grappling with financial burdens, emotional pain, or a lack of purpose. In the midst of these challenges, the Good Shepherd assures us of His provision. He is our Provider, meeting not only our physical needs but also the deeper longings of our hearts. As a community, we should foster a spirit of generosity and compassion, sharing our resources and standing alongside those who are in need. By doing so, we reflect the care and provision of our Shepherd, showing His love to a hurting world.
Look, the struggles and challenges we face within the world around us are diverse and demanding. However, through the metaphor of the weary traveler finding solace and strength in the rest, guidance, and provision of the Good Shepherd, we discover profound truths that resonate with our lives today. We need to intentionally embrace the invitation to rest in His presence, to seek His guidance amidst uncertainty, and to trust in His provision in times of need. As we apply these principles to our lives, we as a community of believers should support and uplift one another, finding solace and strength as we journey together under the watchful care of the Good Shepherd.
We also need to understand that our lives are multifaceted, encompassing physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects that intertwine to shape our overall sense of wholeness. In the metaphor of the Good Shepherd offering rest and restoration, we discover a powerful source of healing and wholeness that speaks directly to the specific needs and concerns we may be facing.

Finding Healing and Wholeness in the Good Shepherd

In our culture today, the pursuit of physical health and well-being is often emphasized. We are bombarded with images of idealized bodies and pressured to meet certain standards. However, the Good Shepherd invites us to prioritize our physical well-being in a holistic manner. We should encourage one another to care for our bodies, not out of comparison or worldly expectations, but as an act of stewardship. By nourishing ourselves with wholesome food, engaging in regular exercise, and practicing self-care, we honor the temple of the Holy Spirit within us. In the restful presence of the Good Shepherd, we find strength and renewal for our physical bodies.
Our society is marked by emotional complexities, including stress, anxiety, loneliness, and relational challenges. The Good Shepherd offers a sanctuary for our emotional well-being, inviting us to bring our burdens, fears, and sorrows to Him. In His presence, we find comfort, understanding, and healing for our wounded hearts. We should create groups where authenticity and vulnerability are valued, allowing individuals to express their emotions without judgment or shame. Together, we can support one another in finding healthy ways to navigate the emotional landscape of our lives.
The pursuit of spiritual meaning and purpose is a fundamental aspect of our lives. The Good Shepherd offers more than temporary solace; He provides deep spiritual restoration and fulfillment. As we engage in spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation, worship, and reflection on God's Word, we open ourselves to His transformative presence. We need to foster a community where individuals can explore and deepen their spiritual journeys, providing resources, mentoring, and means for spiritual growth. In the arms of the Good Shepherd, we discover a source of healing, purpose, and wholeness that transcends the challenges of our cultural context.
The pursuit of healing and wholeness is of utmost importance for each one of us. By acknowledging the interconnectedness of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, we can find solace and strength in the rest and restoration offered by the Good Shepherd. We need to prioritize our total well-being, supporting one another in the pursuit of physical health, emotional wholeness, and spiritual renewal. As we lean on the Good Shepherd's everlasting arms, He brings healing and wholeness to every aspect of our lives, equipping us to navigate the challenges of our world with grace and resilience.
Conclusion
Through the imagery of the weary traveler finding rest and restoration at the oasis, we are reminded of the profound truth it holds for our lives. Just as the traveler discovered solace and rejuvenation in the midst of their journey, we too can find deep rest and renewal in the arms of the Good Shepherd.
Our lives are marked by constant motion, traversing through the deserts of struggle, uncertainty, and challenges unique to each one of us. We often find ourselves weary and burdened, desperately longing for a place of respite and rejuvenation. It is in these moments that the Good Shepherd invites us to the oasis of His presence, where rest and restoration abound.
Just as the traveler found cool shade under the trees, the Good Shepherd provides a refuge from the scorching heat of life's trials. His watchful eyes never leave us, and His guiding staff leads us through the darkest valleys with unwavering care. In Him, we find the strength to face our struggles, the comfort to soothe our weary souls, and the assurance that we are never alone.
The oasis is not merely a temporary escape, but a place where transformation occurs. It is where our brokenness is mended, our wounds are healed, and our spirits are rejuvenated. As we drink from the overflowing cup of His love and feast at His table, we experience the abundance of His grace and mercy.
Just as the weary traveler continued their journey with newfound strength and hope, we too are called to press on with resilience and unwavering faith. The rest and renewal found in the Good Shepherd's presence equip us to face the challenges of our world with courage and perseverance.
So, let us embrace the invitation of the Good Shepherd, allowing Him to lead us to the oasis of rest and restoration. And may we find solace in His comforting arms, strength in His guiding staff, and hope in His promise of abundant life. As we walk alongside Him, we can testify to the transformative power of His love and the peace that surpasses all understanding.
In the journey of life, may we always remember that in the presence of the Good Shepherd, our weary souls find rest, our broken hearts find healing, and our spirits find renewal.
Amen

Amen.
