Spiritual Gifts

Who is the Holy Spirit?
some people say he’s an angel on a power trip JK
The Holy Spirit is God's personal spirit
The Holy Spirit IS God
God is one Being who is so big and so complex and vastly superior to us
most people don’t understand him because he doesn’t fit into one tiny idea of a person.
There are three distinct person’s of the trinity or the godhead
Some people say we have God the Father, God the Son, and God the Bible jk
The Holy SPirit seems to always be the one who seems to be left out
that’s probably OK to him because he doesn’t have an ego
his favorite thing to do is to give Jesus Glory and push the mission of Jesus
but when you under appreciate, underestimate, under welcome, and undervalue the Holy Spirit
you miss out on the majority of the incredible and fun stuff in the kingdom of God
not just fun, but effective
Our passage describes the gifts of the Holy spirit that details the supernatural, everyday things that the Holy Spirit is doing through Christians
1 Corinthians 12:1–3 NASB95
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray to the mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except 1aby the Holy Spirit.

You Can’t Manipulate God

Elijah and the prophets of Baal
Pagans manipulating their gods
We try to manipulate God with Transaction based Prayers
Mosquitoes
1 Corinthians 12:4–6 (NASB95)
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.
There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
Rhetoric that the people of Paul’s time would appreciate. Repeating the same point in three different ways.
Lexham Theological Wordbook (χάρισμα)
χάρισμα (charisma). n. neut. something graciously given; a gift. Something that is freely given on account of favor and kindness. This noun is related to χάρις (charis, “grace, favor”) and refers specifically to the result of gracious giving or action.
Romans 11:29 (NASB95): 29 for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
Lexham Theological Wordbook (διακονία)
διακονία (diakonia). n. fem. ministry, service. Refers to a ministry or service; either waiting on others or a ministry in the church. This word is used to describe several different actions. In its most basic form, the word can refer to the simple servitude that a person would provide when someone was visiting his or her house.
people visiting our house on Friday (17 people in our home)
1 Corinthians 12:7 NASB95
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
Manifestation Definition
an event, action, or object that clearly shows or embodies something, especially a theory or an abstract idea.
"the first obvious manifestations of global warming"
the action or fact of showing an abstract idea.
"the manifestation of anxiety over the upcoming exams"
a symptom or sign of an ailment.
"a characteristic manifestation of Lyme disease"
Synonyms
materialization
demonstration
exhibition
indication
evidence
expression
profession
superpower team
bataman, superman, wonderwoman, aquaman
iron man, captain america, spiderman, antman, black widow,
jean grey, cyclopse, wolverine, storm, iceman, professor X
The Holy Spirit is the source of these 9 powers and he delegates out each specific power as they are needed
Paul describes it like a person may be used in a specific gift or manifestation of the Holy Spirit commonly, but you can be used in whatever the Holy Spirit wants you to be used in.
Every Christian has a kind of Swiss army knife of the Holy Spirit available to them, not to do what you want to do, but to do whatever the Holy Spirit wants to accomplish
True power in the kingdom of god comes from submitting
Doesn’t come from mutant factor, accident of birth, some readioactive spider or goo, or super human syrum.
These powers come from submitting to God
1 Corinthians 12:8–11 NASB95
For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
Three Categories of the gifts of the Holy Spirit
1. Revelation Gifts (Think God’s Thoughts)
2. Demonstration Gifts (Do God’s Deeds)
3. Communication Gifts (Speak God’s Words)
its like three toolboxes you can reach for, but you can’t operate in them whenever you want to, you can only operate in them as the Holy Spirit hands you the wrench or whatever

Revelation Gifts/ Gifts of Knowledge (know something from God) Word of Knowledge Word of Wisdom Discerning of Spirits

God giving you the ability to know things you couldn’t know normally
Word of knowledge
God gives you data information
more people are used in this than they think
sudden impulses to pray for a specific person or situation
sudden nuggets of information that you need to act upon
Acts 9, someone is going to knock on your door
1 Samuel when Samuel meets Saul for the first time and tells him what’s going to happen and where your goats are etc...
They typically start out vague because you are learning how to hear and distinguish God’s voice. As you walk with God, they become more specific
It’s NOT a psychic gifting, that would be a demonic counterfeit
Pharoh’s advisors duplicating, blood and snakes
Word of Wisdom
Where you know What to DO
these gifts kind of bleed over
you don’t necessarily know the why
handstand story
Missionaries in Beirut/ Lebenon in the 1970’s
sitting at their breakfast table on a second story apartment of a wood building
Beirut was a beautiful city then and not a warzone
he tells his wife that he has the incredible, strange, bizzarre urge or feeling that we are supposed to go lay down in the bathtub
they are already up and dressed, and the bathtub is empty
she looks at him and says she would normally think he was crazy but she says that she feels the exact same thing. I’ve been feeling it for a while, and I feel like we are supposed to run to do it.
He says me too and that he won’t tell anybody if you won’t
so they jog down the hallway and got in their big cast iron bath tub and laid down
after about 30 seconds, they think they are going insane, and this is crazy
they are about ready to get out when all of a sudden, their entire apartment building starts taking machine gun fire
they could hear the rounds pinging off of the bathtub,
their entire kitchen where they were moments ago was all shot up and they would have been dead had they not listened
they didn’t know the why, they just knew that they needed to
a lot of the revelation gifts operate that way where we don’t understand the reason
discerning of spirits
some people get kind of spooky about, but it’s just kind of knowing what is motivating something
is something of the Lord or not
spiritual indigestion
confirm words of prophecy and interpretations of tongues
differentiate when a sickness is physical or spiritual (demonic affliction)
It’s not some spooky thing where I see demons or I see dead people or whatever
God is not impressed with people seeing demons
He can do that, but it’s not like a normal gift
Some of us are used in these gifts without knowing, and we think that it is just part of a normal relationship with God and you aren’t wrong
False Quote Attributed to Dead Composer
Zechariah 8:16; 1 Corinthians 12:10; Hebrews 5:14
Preaching Themes: Truth, Wisdom
When French composer Maurice Jarre died, blogs and newspaper websites around the world published a quote attributed to the composer. Jarre was quoted as referring to his life as “one long soundtrack” and of the “final waltz” that would be in his head at his death. As it turned out, they all got the quote from Wikipedia, and it wasn’t authentic. A Dublin University student, Shane Fitzgerald, made up the quote and posted it to Wikipedia. He said he did it as an experiment.
In today’s world of vast databases of information, how can anyone know the truthfulness of anything they read? Whole web sites are devoted to helping people discern truth from fiction (www.snopes.com; www.truthorfiction.com; and others). But now more than ever we need the gift of discernment.
—Jim L. Wilson and Rodger Russell

Demonstration Gifts (do something from God) 1. Gift of Healing 2. Working of Miracles 3. Gift of Faith

While the revelation gifts are kind of like thinking God’s thoughts, the demonstration gifts are doing God’s deeds
Gift of Healing
Working of Miracles
sun standing still
feeding the 5000
Ananias and saphirea in Acts dropping dead in church
finding lost objects (lost goats with Saul)
Gift of faith
different than the faith you have in Jesus that helps you to become a member of his family
it ‘s a real specific thing
It’s kind of revelatory on some levels
You know something before it happens and you pray differently and behave differently
there’s a certainty and confidence in that thing that can only come from the Holy Spirit
Often associated with Giving
God is telling me to promise to give $100 per month even though I don’t know where the money is going to come from, but God will provide.
When God calls us to give more than we can afford, but he makes a way and you have confidence that God is going to provide

Communication Gifts (Speaking God’s words) 1. Gift of Tongues (public) 2. Interpretation of Tongues 3. Prophecy

gift of tongues (public)
not praying in tongues,
someone would then interpret it
interpretation of tongues
Prophecy
prophecy is not predicting the future the vast majority of the time
it is simply a message from God
these gifts don’t happen alot in churches, but maybe they should
So you have thinking God’s thoughts, Doing God’s deeds, and speaking God’s words
Challenge
today before you go to bed, take three minutes
get alone with god
shut the door so nobody can year you
start praying, God I love you, you’re amazing etc
do it verbally, even if it’s whispers
after you are in prayer for a minute or a paragraph or something like that, just stop
lift your hands (no one’s around)
and pray “Holy Spirit I welcome you to fall upon me right now
and you will experience the Holy Spirit’s presence
he won’t scare you, you won’t wet your pants, forget your name
but you will be surrounded by that awe and presence of God
cause that’s what the holy spirit does
the more you welcome him, the more he shows up
