There was an illustration used by Matt Chandler
rose.
pass rose around the room
preaches bad sermon sexual immorality
He Goes WHERE IS MY ROSE
He takes it and Goes WHO WOULD WANT THIS ROSE?
Matt Chandlers point was that Jesus wants the rose!
The rose represents the Lost
And Jesus came to save that which was lost.
This morning - Consider 2 things
1. What is your heart like towards the lost
2. What is Christs heart like towards the lost.
This brings us to our main scripture for today.
John 3:17–18 (ESV)
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
PREFACE WHAT JOHN CH 3 IS ABOUT-
Apostle John detailing Jesus conversation with Nicodemus.
Nicodemus- Pharisee,
Member of Sanhedrin- judge in the jewish court
master of the law
Curious about Jesus ministry, / acknowledges God is with Him.
undoubtedly a recap of a longer conversation
In the conversation- Jesus proclaims important truth
one must be born again to see the kingdom of heaven
Nicodemus is perplexed
Jesus continues on to further preach him the gospel.
This brings us to our first point
Gods heart is to save those who are lost
Gods heart is to save those who are lost
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
most famous verse in the bible - unbelievers know it
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Heres one of the main reasons Jesus has come into the world.
To save it.
heart....core....superhero
And your the one who needs His saving.
Its like David and Goliath
You are not David.
David is a picture of Jesus
you are a picture of the scared Israelites
Jesus Saves The Day. ----SAVIOR
Another great example is in Exodus
Moses is a picture of Jesus
leading the Israelites out of slavery
God using Moses to Save Israel
The old testemant is filled with examples of God saving His people.
But to Nicodemus, This is where He struggles to comprehend
Jesus did not- come save the righteous Jews
He came to save the world.
He came to save that which was lost
This included Zacheus the tax collector.
You know about tax collectors.
And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.” Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
main points
Jesus found Zacheus,
Zacheus knew He was a s inner and made amends for His Sin,
Salvation has come to Zacheus ----- fruit is repentance.
verse 7 - the people didnt think Zacheus deserved Gods grace
complained - He was a sinner
Q. dont we act like that sometimes
Q. Where is your heart for the lost
You were once that lost sinner.
The problem is that you forget that you were Zacheus.
Same thing as Barabbas- you are Barabas
You should be on the cross
But God came to save that which was lost.
I thank God that People loved me and shared Jesus with me while I was still lost in my sin.
We have a propencity to distance ourselves from sinners.
We become a holy huddle of only christians in our lives
And we loose the example of Jesus that he ate with sinners and
This does not mean we condone the behavior excuse it.
Q. what does Jesus say to the woman caught in adultery
A. John 8:10-11
John 8:10–11 (NKJV)
When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”
STORY-
I cant help but think of homosexuals when I think of the lost ones that we avoid.
sponsee- I spent time with him dined with him shared Jesus with Him.
led him to Jesus
When time repent of homosexuality- he said no
I had to cut ties
Our most natural reaction to those who are lost is to stay away.
need to be engaging.
Believe me , they know they are sinners.
sinner is more prepared for repentance.
SO Brother- Seek those whose hearts are ripe.
We are saved from the wrath of God, By the grace of God
We are saved from the wrath of God, By the grace of God
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Faith in Jesus is the only way to salvation.
And the one who has not believed on Jesus, is already condemned.
Q. Why
Making point that -
your born into sin ,
as sinner you are already condemned as guilty before God.
Jesus didnt need to come into the world to condemn it’
The Law already has done that,
the bible says
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Law- expose sin and condemns you a sinner
point you to Jesus- salvation and peace with God
Make this point-
Those who are lost are going to be punished in Hell for all eternity.
I need your heart to match Gods when the bible says
1 Timothy 2:3–4 (NKJV)
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
the greek word for all
Gods heart revealed
it is that all be saved.
Nobody in recent times set this example quite like the calvary chapel.
Hippies and drug addicts,
Q. Who could have been more lost and wayward?
and someone had to dine with them.
Believe me, The calvary chapel had many who threw stones at them for this.
complainers
Gods heart is that those who are lost would be found.
Ezekiel 33:11 (NKJV)
Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’
But Remember that even though He does not take pleasure in the death of the wicked, He is still going to punish the wicked.
Gods heart for salvation and mercy.
equally balanced to justice.
two attributes of God
Harmoniously being displayed in the
salvation of sinners and the
judgment of sinners.
Q. But what is His heart?
His heart is that they would come to be saved
Q. Who do you know that is standing condemned today?
Q. What are you going to do about it?
Dear friend may I suggest something to you.
Imagine looking back at the end of your life
Q. What will be your biggest regret?
Dont think it will be
I wish I would have done more ministry for the Lord.
It will be,
I wish I would have prayed for the lost more frequently.
Pray for the lost, and be ready to befriend them.
Because Jesus is offering them salvation
and you are the means by which the good news is preached
In Closing
In Closing
I want you to examine your heart towards the lost.
Q. are you praying for these people
Q. or are you making fun of them?
Q. Are you prideful that you have escaped the moral decay of this world.
And now are too good to be in the life of a sinner who needs the gospel.
let us not create a holy huddle in our lives
Strip club ministry
To let them know they were loved by Jesus.
this is the example of the Lord in us.
So I encourage you today ----
GO OUT AND SEEK THAT WHICH IS LOST.
and tell them about Jesus
