Psalm 62

2 Songs

This Psalm leads us to go to God in

trying times and days of difficulty

not by taking matters in our own hands,

and trying to take for ourselves.

but

by going to Him by waiting

and pouring our hearts to Him

trusting Him and expecting Him

to Save, to Defend, to show mercy,

as

He is our Rock, our refuge and power

so that when tying times comes

and days of difficulty comes

I shall not be moved.

Psalm 62 NKJV

To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. 1 Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. 2 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. 3 How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you, Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence. 4 They only consult to cast him down from his high position; They delight in lies; They bless with their mouth, But they curse inwardly. Selah 5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. 7 In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. 8 Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah 9 Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor. 10 Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them. 11 God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. 12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work.

Life is full of moments worthy of getting shaken

Sometimes those moments are little things

that just get to us

a disappointment

a discouragement,

Sometimes its big moments

its hard losses

scary situations

In verses 3-4 David here appeared to have

a situation in which people were

attacking him

seeking to bring him down

So this may be a psalm written when was a king

and it appears to be that these were

people being hypocritical to David

they had words that were supportive but

on the inside they were against him

they wanted to see David fail

I am sure we all have experienced this at some

point

or something close

with people coming against us

maybe even being hypocritical

and acting nice to us

but then stab in the back later

It hurts and so David says:

lets read verse 3-4

Psalm 62:3–4 NKJV

3 How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you, Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence. 4 They only consult to cast him down from his high position; They delight in lies; They bless with their mouth, But they curse inwardly. Selah

David addresses the evil being done

He knows they will be judged

but what about himself?

what about ourselves

when we face something like this

or some other evil, hardship

what do we do?

What do most people do?

What most people do is seen in verses 9-10

putting trust in man,

Putting trust in money

my problems will go away

if I had enough money for ....

If these people would just do this or that

then it would be better

If they can help me

I will be be okay

Maybe we can have a false confidence in these things

I have enough money so I will be okay

These people got my back so I am okay

Lets read verses 9-10

Psalm 62:9–10 NKJV

9 Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor. 10 Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.

David understood that whether they are men of low degree or high degree,

they are altogether lighter than vapor

people are here today and gone tomorrow

unless the rapture happens

one day each one of us

will reach the end of our days

so people are not to be trusted.

Neither is money.

We would like to think more money would

make this possible

or solve this issue

it can be tempting to be oppressive

to gain control

for your own increase.

It can be even tempting to take from others.

David said that

trying to take money /robbery is a meaningless hope

but maybe you have riches

so he says dont set your heart on them

Mankind and Money cant be trusted

it is here today gone tomorrow

its what we tend to try to hope to

help fix it all

we easily can think someone or some people

or money will

to help save us from our problems

We think these things will provide protection.

the reality is that hoping in these things

is hoping in something that can slip through our hands

Instead......

here comes the best part of the message.

you already know this Psalm is going to point us to God

but when we are scared to death

when we are hurting

when times are hard

how do we trust God?

3 times here it says God is my rock

3 times here it says God is my salvation

(well one of those actually it says salvation comes from Him

2 times it says God is a refuge

2 times it says God is our defense.

It says Power belongs to God

that mercy belongs to God

Hype God here

God is a rock

He is a foundation to us

what foundation can be any stronger?

This speaks towards strength and stability

Yeah I may be weak But He is strong

Yeah I may feel like giving up

He is stable

May God be our rock

to give us strength and stability.

He is salvation / salvation is from Him.

If i get lost .. He saves

if we fail He saves

No one else can and nothing else

can save us from the things we face.

whether sin, or some result of sin

He saves, salvation is from Him

He is our refuge

this means a place where we can go for protection

when the attacks come

when the trials appear

He is where we can go

and where we should go.

Often we run to distractions

may we run to God

because in Him there is refuge

safety, protection, comfort,

He is our defense

Instead of trying to defend ourselves

He will defend

the word for defense in verse 2

means a strong or high tower or fortress!

it gives the idea that we can go up

to Him

and He will protect us

Power belongs to Him

He can do it all

nothing is too hard for Him

it may be impossible for us

but nothing is impossible for God

Mercy belongs to God

He shows us mercy!

He loves a repentant heart

He is a merciful God

He wants us to acknowledge and know our need for Him

So then what should we do?

when we face those battles

when were hurting

when we are banged up

and we know God is a rock, salvation, He is a refuge,

a defense, that He has power and mercy

what do we do with that?

In this Psalm we see 4 exhortations for us

Pour out your heart before Him

I am not a Hebrew scholar but it spoke to me when I saw

that the word for pour is plural

it causes me to think

give it all to God

or dont just one time pour it out

keep pouring it all out

interestingly the word also is used for the shedding of blood.

it shows me let the pains of your heart be known to God

‘My heart is bleeding over this God...

Let me just say when you pour your heart God

dont stop halfway

pour all of it to God

show verse 8 again

God is a refuge for us. (v.8)

refuge… a shelter from the rain, it Who we run too.

the third exhortation for us is

1. Trust in Him at all times (v.8)

2. Pour out our hearts before Him (v.8)

3. Expect from Him (v.5)

in other word your hope is in Him

We know that with God

comes salvation, hope, healing

joy, peace, rest

we can hope and expect

Him to be gracious, and merciful and loving to us.

We can place our expectations on the wrong things

we can put our expectations on people

or like verse 9-10 say

on money too

those things vanish

Our God is a rock

we can hope from Him.

the fourth and final exhortation is:

said 2 times here

so it is a very important part:

1. Trust in Him at all times (v.8)

2. Pour out our hearts before Him (v.8)

3. Expect From Him (v.5)

4. Silently wait for God (v.1, 5)

Wow… silently wait for God

It says:

Psalm 62:1 NKJV

1 Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation.

5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, ...

It is good for us to pour out our hearts

give your shouts, your cries,

its Good

but may we not miss out on just silently waiting

Isaiah 40:31 NKJV

31 But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

Psalm 62

We all with face times that will shake us

it is easy to try take matters in our own hands

it can be tempting to do what is known to be wrong

to get out of the problem.

May we when we face difficulty turn to God

to be our Rock.

To save me

to defend me

to give me the power to rise up

that that I will not be moved

we are going to close out with more songs

since we didnt break any of it up

but also because I want to give us time

experience what God through this Psalm has for us

but if you have a weight, a burden, a pain

a trial
