Song of Songs

Historically speaking, an allegorical approach that sees the Song of Songs as depicting the love of God for his people has been the most popular among preachers and religious readers.

For that reason, it is unfortunate that the focus of Christian sex education is so often on abstinence. Abstinence focuses attention on what we are not doing. When we abstain from something, we often feel deprived. Yet a Christian view of sex, as depicted in the Song’s counsel to the young women of Jerusalem, is not about abstaining; it is about waiting for the right time and context for an experience that is so overwhelmingly beautiful and powerful that only marriage can properly contain it.
