Hebrews 4:12 First Edge
Hebrews4:12 “For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Soul: breath, breath of life. Seat of feelings and desires, affections and aversions.
Spirit: Current of air, a soul that has left the body.
-Both: focus on our minds; “ Those sinful habits that become as it were, natural to the soul, and rooted deeply in it, and become in a manor, one with it, and cut off by this sword.”
Joints: articulation of the body, place where two bones meet.
Marrow: core of the bones
-Both: focus on our body; “ This sword divides between the joints and the marrow, the most secret, close, and intimate parts of the body; this sword can cut off the lust of the flesh, as well the lust of the mind, and make me willing to undergo the sharpest operation for the mortifying of sin.”
Thoughts and intentions of the heart: Our reasons for what we do, and our motivations for it.
SS/JM: cuts threw mind and body, knows the deepest parts of our being.
“ The word will throw the inside of a sinner out, and let him see all that is in his heart.”
Summary: This sword exposes who you are.
