3 of the most powerful words are SHAME ON YOU
The BIBLE talks about SHAME 6 times more than GUILT
SHAME IS THE ALL CONSUMING CONDITION THAT WE’VE LET DOWN OURSELVES, OTHERS & GOD.
REASONS WE CARRY SHAME
What we did — SELF IMPOSED
What we missed out on
What others did to us
GUILT AND SHAME ARE DIFFERENT
Guilt is “I made a mistake”
Shame is “I am a mistake”
GUILT = activity — SHAME = Identity
BASKETBALL NAME CALLING STORY
That’s guilt.
SIN -> GUILT (conviction) -> REPENTANCE
THE DEVIL IS ALWAYS ABOUT SHAME ON YOU. JESUS IS ABOUT SHAME OFF YOU.
God, after repentance, not only forgives our sin but forgets our sin. He chooses to. EAST FROM WEST.
IF WE DO NOT RUN TO REPENTANCE AFTER GUILT WE WILL LIVE IN SHAME
Guilt unchecked becomes shame. Not only did I make a mistake I am a mistake. Thats the language of the enemy.
SHAME IN HEBREW AND GREEK
Hebrew — BOSCH “To Hide”
Greek “Entropy” – 2nd Law of Thermodynamics — NO OUTSIDE FORCE = CRUMBLE — it will die — it will turn inward.
THAT’S WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR CULTURE TODAY
SHAME IS THE SEWAGE OF SIN — THE WASTE — THE RUNOFF
Genesis 2:25 CSB
25 Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.
THIS IS GODS ORIGINAL INTENT. NO SHAME
But here enters the enemy. He is all about shame.
THINK ABOUT ALL THE EVIL TODAY. It all starts right here. With a plan by the enemy.
Three different games that the enemy plays:
FAME GAME
Genesis 3:1–5 CSB
1 Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden. 3 But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 “No! You will certainly not die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
73,500 species of trees. Adam and Eve had that many options. But wanted the one that God said they couldn’t have because the enemy said it would make them just like God…
We want to run the show and be our own God. We know what’s best.
The enemy wants us to feel as shameful as he does. He’s all about shame. It’s not from God.
Have you ever had those thoughts? Of past mistakes? Of how you’re not enough? That shame is straight from Hell.
When we decide we want to play God we set ourselves up for big time failure
LAME GAME
Genesis 3:6–7 CSB
6 The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
INSTEAD OF DEALING WITH GUILT, WE LET IT TURN TO SHAME, AND WE DEAL WITH IT IN OUR OWN WAYS
This is where we get stuck in addiction. This is where we start unhealthy habits. This is where we take bad decisions and make them a lifestyle.
We decide to cover ourselves instead of allowing God to cover it.
BLAME GAME
Genesis 3:8–13 CSB
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.” 11 Then he asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man replied, “The woman you gave to be with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate.” 13 So the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
WE BECOME A VICTIM
When we are the victim we never move forward. When it’s not our fault, there’s nothing to change and so we never move forward. We never get better.
WHEN WE LIVE HERE… OUR LIFE GET’S PUT ON PAUSE
FAME – Humility
LAME - Vulnerability
BLAME - Responsibility
THINK ABOUT THE CROSS AND THE SHAME IT TRIED TO BRING…
Hebrews 12:2 (CSB)
2 … For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
