Habakkuk 3:3
a
Introduction
One of the most profound statements of worship in all of scripture is given at the end of the chapter (
Hab. 3:16-19
)
Before we can get there, we must work through this theophany in which Habakkuk goes back to what he knows and chooses to trust in that (
Hab. 2:4
)
Teman/Mt. Peran
Teman - Edom; Peran - Mountain in that area -> This is where God led Israel out of bondage from
When faced with annihilation, Habakkuk recalls God’s faithfulness to bring them out of bondage
This in itself was a fulfillment of God’s promise, thus showcasing His faithfulness (
Gen. 17:1-8
;
Gen. 50:22-26
;
Ex. 13:19-22
;
Josh. 24:32
)
God’s faithfulness would not go to waste, but would continue to work to the fulfillment of God’s promise (
Gen. 22:6-13
)
God, The Holy One
Not the covenant God, but the general/creator God (strange to use in conjunction with Teman/Peran reference, but this will build in later verses)
The Holy One -> Beautiful confirmation from the complaint in
Hab. 1:1-4
and question in
Hab. 1:13
Once again, Habakkuk changed, not God
Habakkuk’s comfort was in God’s faithfulness to his self, not in Israel’s ability to please God (
Gen. 15:5-18
)
Our confidence is as secure as God’s commitment to himself (
Is. 61:1-3
)
