Read:John 16:4-15
Point: Jesus is giving truth in order to alleviate sorrow. It is advantageous/ good that He go back to the Father so the Holy Spirit will come to His disciples. (16:5-7) (14:15-17; 26)
Why is this an advantage? What will the Holy Spirit do?

The Work of the Holy Spirit (16:8-15)

Convicting (16:8-11)
Explanation: To expose guilt.
He will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment
Sin= Because world does not believe in Jesus
Righteousness= Because Jesus return to His Father
Judgment= because ruler of this world is judged.
What doe this mean? The Holy Spirit will expose the guilt of the world’s rebellion against God’s righteous standard evidenced in the person and work of Christ and declare the ruler of this world to receive the consequence of this verdict.
Keep in mind the Trinitraian emphasis we have observed throughout John’s gospel. God the Father arranged His plans that are Accomplished by God the Son , and now we see being applied by God the Spirit. God the Holy Spirit is applying the promise that God made all the way back in Genesis 3:15.
Application: To those who are not yet Christians, the Holy Spirit uses the truth to open blinded eyes. To awaken spiritually dead hearts. To bring life to spiritual death. He does this by conviction. He exposes the guilt that we have to God for breaking God’s law. Then, He open our blinded eyes to see Jesus. To see that Jesus died for our sin and guilt. He gives us faith to believe so that we will repent of our sin and turn to Christ and be forgiven. All of this is the blessed work of the Holy Spirit. Why do I feel guilty? How can this guilt be removed?
Transition: Which takes us to the 2nd work of the Holy Spirit.
Guiding (16:12-13)
Explanation: Lead, teach, motivate toward a specific action.
Illustration: Just as you might take a guided tour through the grand canyon in order to see the unique aspects of such a vast and open place, jesus promised His disciples that the Holy Spirit would guide them into all truth.
Why? because He doesn't speak of His own authority.
What? The things that are to come. Namely.. the fact that He will return.
Application: The doctrine of Biblical Revelation. The guiding ministry of the Holy Spirit is key to helping us understand how we have the Bible. (See 2 Peter 1:16-21)
For the Christian.. the Holy Spirit continue to convict/ discipline/ guide when we walk off the pathway of Jesus. When we get caught up in sinful attitudes and actions, he will use the truth t convict us and transform us by the renewing of our minds.
Glorifying (16:14-15)
Explanation: How does Holy Spirit glorify Jesus?
By Declaring the fulness of God the Father through Jesus Christ the Son to Jesus’ disciples. When Holy Spirit is revealing truth to us… it brings glory to Jesus!
Connection to 15:26-27. Witnessing.
Application: The doctrine of the Trinity. God the Holy Spirit has a distinct responsibility to bring glory to Jesus. He does this in perfect harmony with the Godhead. Father , Son and Holy Spirit do not compete. Together, they are one God. Three distinct persons. Not to be confused, but we should recognized the plain fact that we currently live in a context where the primary work of the Holy Spirit is being accomplished. In the grad plan of God we now live in a season where the Holy Spirit is active and working. As Christians, born again by the Holy Spirit, we should be very careful not to resist Him, or quench Him. Rather, let us be comforted and counseled by Him to walk in newness of Life. Let us bear His fruit and so prove to be Jesus’ disciples.
