Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Communion is about
looking at Jesus
learning from cross
inspired by our example
Focus on one word
caught my attention
underlined
“JOY”
Jesus went through with the cross
because of the Joy!
His motivation
for the sacrifice...
“Joy”
What Joy
joy of relationship
joy of saints
joy in restoration
Joy of faithfulness
joy of love
One aspect of communion
is JOY!
Joy is an important
characteristic of Christ
1 Chronicles 16:26–27 (ESV)
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his place.
Some characteristics of God:
creator
spendor/majesty
strength
Lastly: JOY
Major part of God
His character,
Joy...
Therefore
it should also be
characteristic of Christians!
Romans 15:13 ESV
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
Paul wishes two things
upon church in Rome:
peace
faith
Spirit
hope
JOY!
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Fruit of Spirit!
Wholeness of Christian walk
“Fruit” is singular
should have them all.
John 15:10–11 ESV
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
I like this passage because
connects to ideas
that many separate:
obedience and JOY
Many teach
obedience is not fun
but have to do it.
Try to be happy.
Jesus teaches
when we are in love
obedience is joyful.

The Christian experience is joyful

Review and Herald March 15, 1892: The Enduring Treasure

Why should not the religion of Christ be represented as it really is, as full of attractiveness and power? Why should we not present before the world the loveliness of Christ? Why do we not show that we have a living Saviour, one who can walk with us in the darkness as well as in the light, and that we can trust in him?

Some Christians
always
sad
mad
gloomy
grumpy...
serious...
Imagine Jesus
too serious.
never smiled...
Don’t get me wrong
spiritual thing are
eternal in nature
not taken lightly.
But if we have see
love of Christ for us.
being save through grace
Celebrate His Love!
Those that have Christ
they have joy
Zacchaeus
tax collector
hated
short
wanted more in life
wanted to see Jesus
Luke 19:5–6 ESV
And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.
Is Christ in your house?
been forgiven,
experience repentance
experienced humility
experiencing transformation
experienced His grace
Time to have Joy!
God is not
stern judge
waiting to yell
“guilty”
Luke 15:7 ESV
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
God is waiting
to party!!!
Paul speaks of this joy:
1 Thessalonians 2:19–20 ESV
For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.
What is Paul’s joy?
those that have been saved!
Jesus is our joy
Review and Herald May 30, 1882: Growth in Grace

If we would walk in the light, we must follow Jesus, the light of life. What constitutes the brightness of Heaven? In what will consist the happiness of the redeemed? Christ is all in all. They will gaze with rapture unutterable upon the Lamb of God. They will pour out their songs of grateful praise and adoration to Him whom they loved and worshiped here. That song they learned and began to sing on earth. They learned to put their trust in Jesus while they were forming characters for Heaven. Their hearts were attuned to his will here. Their joy in Christ will be proportioned to the love and trust which they learned to repose in him here.

Joy in Christ
not affected
by pain of this world.
Speaking of his death:
John 16:20–22 (ESV)
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but
--
when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
Communion Themes
some sorrowful
last supper
Peter vs Judas
Garden of Gethsemane
Cross
Let us not forget
Sorrow Turned to Joy!!!
at the resurrection.
Let us dwell on the theme
joy in Christ
success in Christ
Psalm 118:24 ESV
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Much of this life
saying no to
temporal happiness
to receive
eternal joy.
Christ Himself does this:
Matthew 26:29 ESV
I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
Final communion
one of joy!
rejoicing!
