1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,
2 because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering,
4 in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5 For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit.
6 Now the mindset of the flesh is death, but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace.
7 The mindset of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit to God’s law. Indeed, it is unable to do so.
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.
10 Now if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through his Spirit who lives in you.
12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh,
13 because if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
14 For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.
15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”
16 The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,
17 and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
Introduction:
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,
Let that marinate for a minute. How many o us believe this? Now, how many of us live our lives like we believe this? You see, sometime we believe the Word in theory but not in practice. Or we believe it for others but not for ourselves.
Let’s try this. How of us believe that we deserve condemnation based on our life’s performance (and this standard)?
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall make no idols.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Keep the Sabbath day holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.
This is exactly Paul’s point. As long as we look in the mirror of the law, we are condemned but there is a freedom that we must know and live. Paul doesn’t spend much time contrasting the dynamics of good and evil here. Instead he points us to life and freedom that we now have.
2 because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
The Spirit set of free from sin and death
3 For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering,
God did what the law couldn’t do (because of our flesh, willing vs. weak). He did this by sending Jesus to fulfill the law.
17 “Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
as a result......
Romans 8:4 (CSB)
4 in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us.....
TO SUMMARIZE
there is no condemnation (to those in Christ)
we are free from sin and death
God did what the law couldn’t do
Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the law
the requirements of the law have been fulfilled in us by faith
we can believe v. 1 because we believe v. 4 (it is not our actions that leave us without condemnation. it was His actions that did it for us)
Because of that the practicality of how we live ought to be drastically different. The posture of our hearts and minds are now different.
(Paul later sums up the law as......Romans 13:9
9 The commandments, Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not covet; and any other commandment, are summed up by this commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself.
This is who were are now.
Romans 8:4 (CSB)
4 in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Walk=live/pattern. We pattern our lives after what the Spirit wants as opposed to what the flesh desires.
A NEW MINDSET (contrast)
5 For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit.
6 Now the mindset of the flesh is death, but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace.
VS. 5 These are not two categories of people but two different styles/ways of living. The Spirit gives us to freedom and power to live by it.
THE POINT
7 The mindset of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit to God’s law. Indeed, it is unable to do so.
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.
As the Spirit is in us we live by the Spirit, but we can also quench the Spirit.
19 Don’t stifle the Spirit.
Romans B. The New Way: Freedom from Control by the Power of Sin (8:5–14)
Here, however, Paul begins by saying that believers are under obligation—but not to the sinful nature. Rather, our obligation is to the Spirit. The believer is indwelled by the Spirit; the believer’s spirit has been regenerated by the Spirit; and the believer’s body will be resurrected from the dead by the Spirit. That puts the believer under an obligation to put to death the misdeeds of the body
Romans (B. The New Way: Freedom from Control by the Power of Sin (8:5–14))
The obligation to practice righteousness consistent with our spiritual position is a clear call in the New Testament:•
13 And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness.
5 Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry.
43 “And if your hand causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and go to hell, the unquenchable fire.
45 And if your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.
47 And if your eye causes you to fall away, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,
ALWAYS REMEMBER WHO AND WHOSE YOU ARE (Black Panther-show them who you are scene)
