› Bibles › Pray Let This Mind Be In You Lets read the section together then we will dive in Philippians 2:5–11 NKJV 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. These verses are often quoted. Because there is so many amazing points here we can easily focus all of our time and attention on the parts that talk about Jesus equality with God or on Jesus coming in appearance as a man on every knee bowing we can focus on every tongue confessing Jesus is Lord while these are great points we definitely will look at Especially during communion. verse 5 tells us why this amazing section is here. 1 of 19

Philippians 2:5 NKJV 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, The mind is something we often hear about as people want to better understand the mind and people want to better understand their own mind so many books , classes, and videos to learn about the mind We all want to better our minds. whether its because we want to sharpen it or we feel like we are losing our minds our minds are important Famous 1800’s minister Ralph Waldo Emerson said "You are what you think all day long.” A good question to ask our selfs is what kinds of thoughts are often filling our minds? are they honoring to God? are they good? are they self focused? 2 of 19

well here in verse 5 We read: Philippians 2:5 NKJV 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, this word for mind comes from the same word we saw in verse 2 in our last study about unity through humility to be like minded and one minded which means our thoughts and our thinking So we see here to share the same thoughts of Jesus. Maybe you have heard some say To have the mind of Christ & thats the mind described in our verses today. As it will show us by Jesus’s examples The kind of mind He had. So we will see our great God, be greatly humble, and be greatly exalted. 3 of 19

› lets look at verse 6 that will show us the greatness of who He is. Philippians 2:6 NKJV 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 3 things about our Jesus here. (No slide) 1. He is in the form of God 2. He is equal with God 3. He did not consider it robbery to be equal with God The word for “form” is morphe Which is defined as an essential form which never alters so no one could be in the form (morphe) of God who was not God. 2nd it also says that He is equal with God The Word for equal here in original language means the same as, equivalent , copy. 2 Samuel 7:22 NKJV 22 Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. Jesus is not like God... 4 of 19

no one is like God Jesus is God So when it comes to who Jesus is No one, no thing is greater and yet and 3rd thing we see aboutJesus ... He did not consider it robbery to be equal with God the word robbery here also means something to be grasped so in other words He didn't consider His equality with God to be something grasped When Jesus was tempted by satan in the wilderness He didnt try to grasp onto His authority by removing Satan When Jesus was on earth He wasn't grasping for His diety He instead got hungry, He got tired, He got sad 5 of 19

He didnt make His life easier, and without pain. When He was on the cross He didn't try to grasp His power to smite His persecutors He didn't take His equality with God something He could take for Himself. Which gives us our first insight to His mind. that His mind was humble in that He didn't make it easier on Himself He allowed Himself to experience the aches, pains, and trials of humanity if we had the option I think we all would choose to not have bumps in life or any mountains to climb We would take the easiest life possible. Jesus did not... and not just that 6 of 19

our amazing Jesus takes it a step further. › lets read verse 7 that shows us the great things He did Philippians 2:7 NKJV 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. So Jesus, didn't just take His equality with God as something to grasp He also made Himself of no reputation.... He made Himself of no reputation by taking on humanity Fully God, & Fully Man.... But by taking on humanity He made Himself of no reputation He left the glory to be with us. To be like us. now lets not miss out of the great act and gift to mankind this is! to be thankful to God for coming to us 7 of 19

He did this because He loves us that much and not only did He make Himself of no reputation He takes it even further and it says in verse 7 that He took the form of a bondservant. that word “form” is the same word for form in that “being in the form of God” And also being in the form of a bondservant. Which is another word for slave God and bondservant Who would ever think that could be the same person? He is love He serves. So here we see Him taking the form of a bondservant a slave... to serve us... to give us the greatest gift mankind has and will ever receive. 8 of 19

Mark 10:45 NKJV 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” and here is a spot for us to remember that this is the mindset for us to have. our thoughts shouldn't be about what we can gain its about what we can give To share the thought of Christ the mind of Christ is to not make it about self its not to rise to power to keep climbing a status ladder it is to serve Mark 9:35 NKJV 35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” Who are we to think anything of ourselves When Jesus who is God didn't take His equality with God 9 of 19

something to be grasped Made Himself of no reputation and became a bondservant. how did He become a bondservant? the last part of verse 7 tells us “by coming the in likeness of men” this speaks of His birth born in a manger to a poor family wrapped in swaddling cloths to be kept warm. its like He keeps stepping down the rungs of the ladder to reach us as ... says 2 Corinthians 8:9 NKJV 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. verse 8 of Phil 2: continues the thought and shows that Jesus didn't stop there Read verse 8 10 of 19

Philippians 2:8 NKJV 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. first we see He was found in appearance as a man. while there isn't much to find of His appearance the last part says Isaiah 53:2 (NKJV) 2 .... And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. the point is that Jesus looked like an ordinary man. He wasnt walking around with some special beauty and a halo Jesus didnt come with a look at how great I am He didnt come taking the greatest human looks He wasnt about the things we could so easily be consumed by He was like common man and He didnt stop there but it says next in verse 8 he also humbled Himself 11 of 19

which is amazing because He is the only one truley worthy to exalt Himself to be prideful yet we see Him humble. a verse that displays His humility so well is John 13:3–5 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. if all things were given into our own hands would we wash someones feet? men would wet really wash some other dudes feet? what about if we knew that we would be diving shortly would we was someones feet? most likely it would be spent doing all that we want. Jesus served... Think if Jesus was physcially here with us at church what would He be doing? 12 of 19

No doubt ministering but we would also likely doing the things we have been refusing to do and not wanting to do. lets again be reminded of this sections point that are to have the same mind that is in Christ. Like Jesus, may we embrace humility and willingly serve others because its not about us or self God has called us together for bigger purposes. That is less about what we we can gain from each other And more on how we can give to one another. Jesus who is worthy of it all humbled Himself and He didn't stop there but He also obeyed obedience isnt just not sinning but it is also doing what He calls you to do 13 of 19

Jesus said in John 6:38 John 6:38 NKJV 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. Jesus lived to do what God wants. We all have a calling we have a general calling we all share and we have specific calling if you dont know your specific calling then do the general calling we all have to serve, to love, to make disciples, to edify the body of Christ. So in the mind of Christ For us to learn from is To be obedient Do what God has called for you to do. For how long? Until the day we die Because like we see here about Jesus He obeyed up to death His call was to be a sacrifice for us 14 of 19

To pay the price for our sins that we could NOT pay for. He died so we can live! So He remained committed to what God wanted. all the way to death He gave and gave OF His life for us and He then gave it all by giving His whole life for us so He obeyed unto death but He didnt stop there it emphasis even death of the cross this is emphasized for how horrific His death was the cross was designed to maximize suffering, prolong agony, and publicly humiliate Church Jesus didn't stop He gave, He gave He gave He did not stop by not grasping on to His diety He did not stop there 15 of 19

He made Himself of no reputation then He didnt stop there He took the form of slave then He did stop there and He came to this world as a man and He humbled Himself and He remained obedient and He didnt stop until He died giving His life for us! by death of the cross I think Paul here was awe struck at His humility here like I hope we all are He didnt stop giving of Himself and He also gave us His whole self. by dying for us. and when He did! we see Jesus get all that He deserves that we read about in verses 9-11 Which is the kind of mind 16 of 19

Paul is exhorting us to share. Now as we look at verses 9-11 I believe these verses are meant to make us happy to see Jesus get what He truly deserves not the cross, but a crown He is Christ and He is King. I can picture Paul in prison joyfully wrote v.9-11! Lets see all that our humble servant and God Jesus receives! › start at verse 9 Philippians 2:9 NKJV 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 1. God has highly exalted Him NO SLIDE James 4:10 NKJV 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Jesus gave more than we ever could And did more then we ever Good 17 of 19

So He is exalted way above anyone! And so as the next part of verse 9 says 2. He receives the name which is above every name no other name can save Acts 4:10–12 NKJV John 20:31 NKJV no other name can we pray by by His name demons can be cast out (Mark 16:17) by His name we can pray healing of the sick (jas 5.14) His name is above every name and if we dont realize it now we will later because as verses 10 and 11 says: Philippians 2:10–11 NKJV 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. not at a name at THE name of Jesus Whether in heaven, on earth or in hell! All will bow! better for us to bow down now. 18 of 19

and confess He is Lord now Jesus as we see here is highly exalted because He humbly gave, and obeyed, and served. I began this message with a question What kinds of thoughts fill our minds? To have the same mind Like Christ To be humble And humbly give, obey, and serve. As › worship team come forward to prepare for communion I want to encourage you consider the thoughts you have today. Are they about the call God has for you Are they humble thoughts Are they thoughts of serving and giving? › COMMUNION 19 of 19
