Verse

21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

God affirms us, making us a sure thing in Christ, putting his Yes within us. By his Spirit he has stamped us with his eternal pledge—a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete.

21 It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, 22 and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.

Introduction

With all the Jesus has done for us, we can be sure in one thing – that He has given it all to have us. In the world, there are many uncertainties. People are afraid of commitment. But not our God. Our God is not unsure of us. He knows us, and even at our current state, wherever we are in life, He gives it all up to have us.

1. Guaranteed

V21: “establishes”, “stand firm”
1 & 2 Corinthians Paul’s Change of Plans / 1:12–2:4

In the first-century Mediterranean world, this was a technical word for a legal guarantee that would confirm a sale as valid. All terms of the sale would be carried out as promised.

2. Commissioned

V22: “anointed”, “putting His Yes within us”
God commissioned us and gave us His authority. Think about giving your name and entrusting it to someone else to act in your power. This is a huge investment and commitment! To think that the God of the universe did this to us.
