The Will of God:
1: God’s Sovereign Will:
Unknowable so it is not something we seek, rather it is something we submit too.
2: God’s Moral Will:
Where God commands we must obey.
3: God’s Freedom Permitting Will:
Where there is no command God gives us both freedom and responsibility to choose.
Genesis 2:16–17 BSB
16 And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden, 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”

The Nature of Sin

1 John 3:4 BSB
4 Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.
Romans 4:15 BSB
15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression.

Examples of God’s Freedom Permitting Will:

Leviticus 22:18 BSB
18 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and all the Israelites and tell them, ‘Any man of the house of Israel or any foreign resident who presents a gift for a burnt offering to the LORD, whether to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering,
Matthew 20:14–15 BSB
14 Take your pay and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you. 15 Do I not have the right to do as I please with what is mine? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
1 Corinthians 8:8 BSB
8 But food does not bring us closer to God: We are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
1 Corinthians 10:27 BSB
27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience.
1 Corinthians 7:19 BSB
19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commandments is what counts.
2 Corinthians 9:7 BSB
7 Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 6:14 BSB
14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership can righteousness have with wickedness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?
1 Corinthians 7:39 BSB
39 A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.
Philemon 14 BSB
14 But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness will not be out of compulsion, but by your own free will.

Every NT verse about seeking or knowing God’s will:

Romans 12:1–2 BSB
1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
1 Thessalonians 4:3–7 BSB
3 For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; 4 each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 and no one should ever violate or exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness.
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 BSB
16 Rejoice at all times. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 2:15 BSB
15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorance of foolish men.
Ephesians 5:17 BSB
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
1 Corinthians 10:23 BSB
23 “Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything is edifying.
