I Peter 3.1-7
Again, comes on the heels of a description of what Christ did for us.
This time in relation to not responding when treated badly.
Not reviling when reviled.
Submissive - In The Same Way - mutual submission
Christianity is the only religion in the world that elevates women to their proper role as co-image bearers.
In the ancient world wives possessed no authority or influence beside their husbands.
This authority had to be accompanied by deference and courtesy.
Women were without rights and considered of inferior status.
Christ elevates that
Galatians 3:28 NASB95
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Four things that men show their wives:
Understanding instead of thoughtlessness.
Compassion over “weaknesses” rather than belittling.
Consideration rather than dismissal - just a woman...
honor rather than exploitation
Grace rather than judgment
Gracious gift of life
brought to life by God’s will and design.
Re-birthed by God’s sacrifice and Holy Spirit empowerment.
Four differences:
Different receptacles: bodies - we had no choice in this.
Different physical makeup
Different psychological makeup
Different roles: primary vs. exclusive
Different responsibilities -
Different responses -
sarx of Eph. 5.29
Subtle reference to the sexual side of the marriage relationship
There must be sensitivity on both sides in this issue.
1 Peter 3:7 NASB95
You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
Husband…Here’s some Advil for your headache. Wife…I don’t have a headache. Husband…Good to know. Lights fade...
Men are like microwave ovens. Hit start and instant heat.
Women are like crock pots. Turn on and slowly heat up.
It is easier for men to compartmentalize their lives. They could have had the worst day, but come bed time, none of that matters.
Whereas women tend to be wholistic. Everything that happens in a day can affect their mood and attitude in the evening.
Don’t unite ourselves with a prostitute
1 Corinthians 6:15–20 NASB95
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.” But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
Which leads directly into teaching on sexual submission
1 Corinthians 7:1–6 NASB95
Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman. But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But this I say by way of concession, not of command.
