John 14:13 NKJV
13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John 14:14 NKJV
14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
John 15:16 NKJV
16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
Jesus talks about answered prayer
Why we end our prayers with “In Jesus’ Name”
Misconception that praying in Jesus’ Name is a formula to answered prayer.
Being told to pray in the Name of Jesus has some major implications - it is both a privilege and a responsibility.
Praying in Jesus’ Name:
Is done from a relationship.
Is enlisting in the work of Jesus.
Responding to God’s divine appointment.
Is praying according to God’s will.
Glorifies God.
Praying in Jesus’ Name:
Is done from a relationship.
We know really Jesus.
An illustration of having a businessman friend who allowed you to enter a transaction in His Name. (credit card example)
“Whatever You ask in My Name...”
John 14:14 NKJV
14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
So praying in Jesus’ Name is a privilege given to only those who have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYING IN JESUS’ NAME...
2. Is enlisting in the work of Jesus.
Twice Jesus said, whatever we ask in His Name, if we ask anything in His Name..
I WILL DO IT
I take this as a mighty privilege, that Jesus promised that He would personally act when we pray in His Name
We have to be careful not to think that we can make Jesus do whatever we want.. Not to do our bidding but HIS.. we have a responsibility to pray for what brings glory to the Father.
So we pray to be able to do the works of Jesus.
Luke 4...
Luke 19:10 NKJV
10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
I have always seen the Lord respond in prayer for a missions outreach (talk about the July 4 event)
Don’t you just love Jesus? He takes ownership of that prayer.
PRAYING IN JESUS’ NAME IS:
3. Responding to God’s Divine appointment.
John 15:16 NKJV
16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you… “
You see the will of God at play here.. it is not about our will of choosing Him, but He chose us..
Many are called but a few are chosen.
The doctrine of election - many debate over this - God’s sovereignty or man’s free will. I believe it is both..
Let us not forget God’s foreknowledge..he chooses those He knew would put their faith in HIM..
Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Romans 8:29 NKJV
29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Whom He foreknew… He also predestined.. (continue to verse 8:30)
“I CHOSE YOU AND APPOINTED YOU TO BEAR MUCH FRUIT”
PRAYING IN JESUS’ NAME:
4. Is praying according to God’s will.
This is the “ANYTHING” or “WHATEVER” in “Whatever You ask the Father in My Name, He may give you.
1 John 5:14–15 NKJV
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
Before God can even hear us.. what we ask should be in accordance to His will.
Now the question is what is God’s will or specifically what is God’s will for me. (subject for another sermon)
From the Bible (God’s revealed will)
One thing about God’s will for you is that it is good, acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2 NKJV
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
God’s will for you is found in today’s text itself.
“THAT YOU WILL BEAR FRUIT THAT WILL LAST”
God’s will is demonstrated when we pray without ceasing.
1 Thessalonians 5:17–18 NKJV
17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
PRAYING IN JESUS’ NAME
5. Glorifies God.
“THAT THE FATHER MAY BE GLORIFIED IN THE SON” (John 14:13b)
Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Your Name.
Jesus is about glorifying the Name of the Father.
John 12:28 NKJV
28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
How do we glorify God in our lives..
there are many ways (examples) … but I will take it to the extreme.. are we willing to give our very lives for Jesus’ Name..
The disciples… they rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer for His Name.
We pray in Jesus’ Name.. are we ready to suffer for His Name.
John 21:19 NKJV
19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”
May giving glory to God in Jesus’ Name be the story of all our lives.
