Introduction

Why do we live?
The popular cultural answer is to progress, to make money, to find love, to make friends, to live life to the max, but is that really the purpose of life?
Is there more to it than that? I think all of those things are incredibly important, but I also think there is more to it than that.
Why do we live?
I want to work through that question and really seek to uncover why.
Remember as we read here in Acts 1, what just happened. Jesus died and was resurrected and now the disciples are waiting to see what’s next.
As We read today in Acts 1 I want you to notice what Christ is calling these early Christians to do, as he guides them about their next steps in life.
as we read also consider this statement that my commentary made about this passage and the main idea within it.
Think about how it relates to your life.
MAIN IDEA: Because of Christ’s ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit, Christians can be effective witnesses in their communities, around their own states or provinces, throughout the country, and around the world.

Introduction

Acts 1:1–8 CSB
1 I wrote the first narrative, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day he was taken up, after he had given instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After he had suffered, he also presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 While he was with them, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. “Which,” he said, “you have heard me speak about; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
When Jesus died and was resurrected, he gave us instructions to receive the holy spirit and to go.
This was not the end, but the beginning for the local church
How do you think we be witnesses for Christ?
I want to focus in on one core idea that I think the passage shows.

#1 We don’t know the Day Nor Hour, so Go.

This is why the Christian witnesses. Because Christ is our hope and eternity is our promise.
God calls us to share that with the world. He says in the passage it’s not for us to know the day nor the hour, but to be empowered by the spirit to go.

3V3 Encouragement

Tonight we have a great opportunity to witness.
The 3v3 Tournament has a large portion of kids coming who we are not very familiar with, kids who may not have a church home.
Tonight remember that as a Christian, the reason we live is simple. It’s to share the good news.
Look for ways both verbal and nonverbal to share that hope.
Be Christlike on the basketball or volleyball court.
Talk about Christ.
Keep others accountable to the Christ-like standard we are trying to set.
Look for ways to serve

Conclusion

I don’t think that will be any issue at all for you guys, I know it can be scary, but your seemingly small actions today can have a monumental impact tomorrow.
Never, for fear of feeble man, restrain your witness.
Charles Spurgeon
so go today, don’t let anything hold you back from sharing the hope of Jesus that set you free!
