“The Big Ask”

welcome church
today we are continuing on in our journey through the book of Luke as we continue through chapter 9
today we find our selves following Jesus as he finally gets away with the disciples for some quiet 12v1 time...
but as he is spending time discipling the disciples he asks them a very important question...
lets find out what that question is, and their response
Luke 9:18–20 ESV
Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
Church this is the sovereign authoritative powerful word of God, may we truly never take it for granted....
Possibly bring up what grandma Mary, Alex, and I were talking about
Its a short passage, and it wont take too long = i was going to bundle next weeks message with this, however, 2 things. 1 next weeks message is going to be deep, and 2 this message has some powerful legs to stand on it own when we fully dive in.
Today we are presented with the BIG ASK…Who do YOU say that i am???
Think about this as we dive into todays passage
lets dive in
Luke 9:18–19 ESV
Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.”
So first things first, we can see that clearly Jesus and his disciples were able to get away from time to time by themselves
now its no flyover verse when we see that jesus was praying…Jesus was praying. Clearly this taught the disciples the importance of prayer if Jesus the messiah, the God of the universe was taking time to pray, and this is not the first time and as we know will not be the last, thus showing us as well the importance of prayer…personally, as a marriage, as a family, as a church, prayer is important and our lord showed us that..
Talk about time I was at home depot and yelled out gracias out loud in spanish and a guy turned around and thought i was talking to him, the awkward moment of trying to think i knew who he was and he me yet we did not…or the Emmy story
Have you ever been there? Talk on this
you see thats whats going here. The people are making quick judgments of who this guy is thats been the talk of the town, whos speaking these messages and healing the people setting them free and based off their limited knowledge and surroundings and circumstances, and perspective our guessing who he could possibly be.
relate it to our lives
People were saying Jesus was John the baptist due to the message he was preaching and its similarity to johns
People said he was Elijah due to the miracles he was performing
And yet others said he was a prophet of old all this possibly coming from Deuteronomy 18:18 “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.”
Now this is important, Jesus asked his disciples what was being said = he didn't have social media to see the comments so he asked the ones who had recently been amongst the people, but and its a big but, what Jesus really cared about was what his followers, his disciples, were saying about him
Stand with me as i come to conclusion
Luke 9:20 ESV
Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
Leave it to Peter, gotta love that guy…Throughout Luke we have been seeing Luke clearly document what peoples reactions have been to Jesus and his message (4:42–44; 5:15, 25–26; 8:37, 56) and their questions revolving around Jesus’ identity (4:14–30; 7:16; 8:25; 9:7–9).
Finally Peter gave a clear answer to Jesus’ identity: “You are the Messiah sent from God!” (9:20 NLT).
This is the conclusion that everyone should come to, for who else—but God—has power over nature (8:22–25), thousands of demons (8:26–35), all kinds of diseases (5:12–15; 8:43–48), and death itself (8:51–56)?
Who else can supernaturally supply food to thousands (9:13–17) and also give them the words that can bring eternal life (6:20–49)?
A questions that was asked some 2,000 years ago still rings today, so church, who do you say that jesus is?
and don’t just say what you think i or the rest of the church wants to hear, examine yourself for the answer
Because understand this if you say Jesus is the christ, the messiah, the one and only son of God, your are firmly planting your feet on that truth and all the truth that comes with the word of God the costs and the sacrifices....but by planting and accepting the truth of Jesus, the truth of the word of God you also receive him and all the riches and rewards that come with the truth also
let me tell you who the Bible says jesus is
He is our Redeemer (Job 19:25 “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.” )
He is our Bread of Life (John 6.35 “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” )
He is our Creator (Isaiah 40.28 “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.” )
He is our Lord (John 21.7 “That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.”)
He is our Provider
He is our Christ
He is our Strong tower
He is our prince of peace
He is our place of refuge
He is our everlasting hope
He is our counselor
He is the alpha and omega
He is the beginning and the end
He is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore
He is Jesus Christ our Savior
Come on church, you see by acknowledging he is the messiah, the christ, the anointed one, the disciples were accepting all that came with that answer and they were willing to stand firm on that truth because, even in their brief time with jesus they knew, that all that he was and came here to be for all who would too choose to follow him.....
So again who do you say he is??
Lets Pray
HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER.....
