Review & Overview
Well good evening church as you can see Pastor Clark is not in tonight.
All his kids & grandkids are in town and so he is spending time with them.
If you don’t know me my name is Anthony I am one of the pastors on staff I serve in the High school ministry.
And I am please to be here with you all tonight.
Looking forward to dive into the bible as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Well with that being said, if you have your bibles open up to 2 Samuel 22
1. Second Samuel Review
1. Second Samuel Review
There are 3 parts to 2 Samuel:
The Triumphs of David Ch. 1-10
This is where David is anointed as King before the People, he was anointed king in the eyes of God in 1 Samuel. But here it’s recognized by the people.
We see that David really establishes his presences as King through several Triumphs & Victories:
He has a political Triumph, a spiritual triumph, & a military triumph.
And that really establishes Davids presences as King by gaining the trust of the people by gaining popularity w/ the people.
The Transgressions of David Ch. 11
Where David gets caught up on the slippery slope of sin.
He commits adultery w/ Bathsheba, attempts to deceive Uriah, and arranges for Uriah’s murder.
And chapter 11 is what really sets up the final part.
The Troubles of David Ch. 12-24
Here we see King David is rebuked by the Prophet Nathan, he repents, but their illegitimate child dies.
He then begins to have Trouble in his household w/ Incestuous relationships that leads to a murder.
And then he begins to have troubles in his kingdom.
His own son Absalom rebells from him, gains popularity with the people and leads an insurrection and reigns as king for a short while.
David is then restored as king but then experiences another insurrection and he deals w/ that, the Lord gave him victory.
Now more recently in ch. 21 David and the nation of Israel experience a 3 year famine that really puts him to the test.
Right after the famine he has to go to war with the Philistines and goes up against Goliath’s 4 sons.
And that is where he and his people realize he is getting old and they suggest for him to no longer fight in battle.
2. Current Study’s Overview
2. Current Study’s Overview
So as you can imagine, this is a time of Great Trouble for David. But, it’s in the midst of this time is when King David sings a song to the Lord. He praises the Lord.
Even though it was a time of trouble for David. The Lord delivered David and in may ways protected David.
The title of today’s message is: A King’s Joyous Shout
David understood that it was the Lord who had delivered him & protected him all these years…
So he writes a song of Praise & Thanksgiving to the Lord for not only delivering him from his enemies but for establishing him as King of Israel…
And this song of praise is also almost identical to Psalm 18:…
You’ll also notice the literary style of writing changes from this point moving forward.
Up to this point the writer is using a prose style of writing, it’s a simple narrative that contains a natural flow of speech.
But here in Ch. 22 the style of writing changes:
There is parallelism, Rhythmic Structure, there’s Imagery, the language is elevated, you can almost see his emotional expression, the writer provides depictions of divine intervention and attributes of God. So it’s poetically structured.
If your taking notes we want to look at 5 things that involves David’s Praise:
1. David’s Praise Involves God’s Reputation Vs. 1-4
2. David’s Praise Involves God’s Salvation Vs. 5-20
3. David’s Praise Involves God’s Motivation Vs. 21-28
4. David’s Praise Involves God’s Administration Vs. 29-49
5. David’s praise Involves His Recognition Vs. 50-51
1. David’s Praise Involves God’s Reputation Vs. 1-4
1. David’s Praise Involves God’s Reputation Vs. 1-4
This is a good way to start off all our prayers, acknowledging Who the Lord is. Not coming to Him right off the bat & asking for something but simply recognizing who He is our life.
APPLICATION: When we begin to recite the various attributes of God, talking about how Big & Mighty God really is, that’s when our problems & situations become very small & seemingly insignificant.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Who can overpower us? Who can defeat us? No one.
And maybe talk about how theology is for everyone. Theology is eternal life.
At the end of the day knowing God is eternal life, and eternal life is theology, knowing God.
3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
When we understand that, we understand God is bigger than life, He is our life.
4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
What is God’s reputation? He is everything for us: Rock, strength, deliverer, shield, salvation, savior, stronghold.
2. David’s Praise Involves God’s Salvation Vs. 5-20
2. David’s Praise Involves God’s Salvation Vs. 5-20
3 things
2.1 God’s Salvation Requires Tribulation Vs. 5-6
2.1 God’s Salvation Requires Tribulation Vs. 5-6
If there was no tribulation there wouldn’t be a need for salvation. If there is no issue there is no need for God’s deliverance.
33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”
APPLICATION: It’s how we cope through the tribulation, it’s how endure and persevere in light of tribulation.
because what do people typically do? They go their friends, they go to drugs, they go to entertainment.
But not Children of God in Vs. 7 David initiates by calling upon the Lord.
2.2 God’s Salvation Requires Initiation Vs. 7
2.2 God’s Salvation Requires Initiation Vs. 7
The initiation here is twofold: God allows the tribulation therefore David calls upon the Lord. In his distress he called upon the Lord.
Calling upon God is a great treasure for the believer. In fact, Calling upon God is an act of worship
Genesis 12:8 (NKJV)
8 ...he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.
In Psalm 99:6 calling upon God was part of the priestly function for intercession.
6 Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those who called upon His name; They called upon the Lord, and He answered them.
Throughout scripture we see it is common for the child of God to call upon God:
Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Jonah, Steven all called upon God.
APPLICATION: So I think the question for us is straight forward. Are we calling upon God. Are we seeking the Lord?
Maybe some who are here this evening are in desperate need of salvation? The Bible is very clear...
21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.’
Joel 2:32 (NKJV)
32 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved...
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
and I understand this is speaking of our eternal life but it also applies our practical life.
So we have to call upon God. We have to be like peter when he begins to drown there Matthew 14:30 he said Lord save me!
APPLICATION: As children of God we should be calling upon God. Because again the Bible is clear, if we don’t...
6 Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You, And on the kingdoms that do not call on Your name.
Jeremiah 10:25 (NKJV)
25 Pour out Your fury on the Gentiles, who do not know You, And on the families who do not call on Your name...
2.3 God’s Salvation Requires His Qualification Vs. 8-19
2.3 God’s Salvation Requires His Qualification Vs. 8-19
In other words the Lord delivered David in a very spectacular & mighty way. David needed God’s qualifications, his strength, power, and omnipotence.
Which was a good thing because David said in Vs. 18b that his enemies were too strong for him...
David realized that he couldn’t fight the enemy in his own strength, in his own power, he needed help, he needed God’s support.
APPLICATION: This is a good thing for us to remember as well, because our enemy is not in the natural realm but in the spiritual realm. So like David we too need supernatural help.
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.
3. David’s Praise Involves God’s Motivation Vs. 20-28
3. David’s Praise Involves God’s Motivation Vs. 20-28
Why does God bring salvation? why does he deliver us? what is His motivation?
Number 1, God delivers us...
3.1 Because He Delights In Us Vs. 20
3.1 Because He Delights In Us Vs. 20
The Lord delights in us...
Delight Definition - means to take a high degree of pleasure and satisfaction in someone or something.
And man, that is so hard to believe! I like what Pastor Clark says, “I can’t believe God likes us, let alone love us”
But regardless how we feel, God’s word says that he delights in us - He takes pleasure & satisfaction in us He enjoys us.
3 As for the saints who are on the earth, “They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.”
Isn’t it amazing that God’s delight in us is not based on our perfection but on His abundant love? He sees us through the lens of Christ’s redeeming work on the cross.
Despite our sins, despite our failures, God’s love and delight in us remain unchanging.
APPLICATION: Let that truth sink deep into your hearts today. No matter what your past has been, no matter what mistakes you’ve made, remember that God delights in you.
His delight does not hinge on you being flawless. Instead, it is based on His love, His grace, and His mercy.
When you walk out of here, remember you are a delight to God. Embrace His love, walk in His grace, and let His joy overflow within you.
For He has rescued you, brought you into a spacious place, and He delights in you.
Number 2 God delivers us because...
3.2 Because of Righteousness Vs. 21-25
3.2 Because of Righteousness Vs. 21-25
Here we see why the Lord delivered David, because he was a righteous man.
But wait a minute! time out! David was a liar, an adulterer, a murderer true... But he REPENTED.
This is toward the end of David’s life when he no doubt wrote Psalm 38 & 51, Psalms of confession & repentance.
So David confessed his sin & repented of his sins.
And the key is found in Vs. 25b David was righteous & clean in the Eyes of God… and the same is true for us...
Practically, in the eyes of man, we are all sinners and prone to wander off.
The bible says all we like sheep have gone astray...
There is a nature that we all struggle with on a daily basis that wants nothing to do with God.
Positionally, In Christ, we are made Righteous.
9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
In God’s eyes we are holy, righteous, & perfect.
Number 3, God saves us because...
3.2 Because of Humility Vs. 26-28
3.2 Because of Humility Vs. 26-28
So we have a strong contrast between the Humble & the Haughty.
It says that the humble will be saved but the haughty will be brought down, which is an important truth.
David humbled himself in realizing he couldn’t defeat the enemy alone, he needed the Lord’s help, this is a good thing for all of us to remember.
APPLICATION: Sometimes we have to humble ourselves by recognizing we can’t do it! It takes humility to trust in the Lord and to place our faith in God.
It’s prideful to take matters into our own hands without seeking the Lord or anyone.
1 Peter 5:5 God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.
Understand God commands humility...
8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?
And you know this is exactly what King David did… Early in his life we see:
18 So David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”
But even later in his life as king he remained humble:
18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
C.S. Lewis Quote: Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.
1. David’s Praise Involves God’s Reputation 2. Involves God’s Salvation 3. Involves God’s Motivation
4. David’s Praise Involves God’s Administration Vs. 29-49
4. David’s Praise Involves God’s Administration Vs. 29-49
So we see that King David achieved many things in his lifetime:
He destroyed his enemies
He survived the contentions of his people
He became an authoritative conqueror where people he doesn’t even know submit to him.
He achieved political power
He became wise regarding military strategy
King David achieved many things in his lifetime. And you know human beings can achieve many things:
We can accumulate wealth
gain political power
build giant buildings
We can learn and be intelligent and have many degrees
We can have military victory
do many courageous acts
But here’s the thing: there are many limitations to human achievements.
and what I mean by that is achieving things in your own strength and not by the power and administration of God.
If your taking notes I want to give you 3 limitations to human achievements:
1. Human achievements can lead to pride:
2 Chronicles 26:16 (NKJV)
16 But when he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction, for he transgressed against the Lord his God...
29 At the end of the twelve months he was walking about the royal palace of Babylon. 30 The king spoke, saying, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?”
31 While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven: “King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you!
2. Human achievements can give false security:
We see that with the parable of the Rich Fool in...
16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’
18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’
20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’
Jeremiah 48:7 (NKJV)
7 For because you have trusted in your works and your treasures, You also shall be taken...
3. Human achievements are ultimately futile:
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun.
King David achieved many things in his lifetime. but it wasn’t without God’s involvement and administration.
It was because of God, David did all those mighty works, it was because of God he overcame his enemies and was exalted to a high place.
APPLICATION: Understand, for us children of God we must do things according to God’s will and administration.
Because when we do things, achieve things, it’s all God, all credit goes to Him! So by default it forces us to remain humble.
Understand God’s going to do His work with or without us...
2 “I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
When we allow the Lord to be our strength then there is purpose in what we achieve. Because we are doing what God desires to do. Then it’s not futile.
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
1. David’s Praise Involves God’s Reputation 2. Involves God’s Salvation
3. Involves God’s Motivation 4. Involves God’s Administration
5. David’s Praise Involves His Recognition Vs. 50-51
5. David’s Praise Involves His Recognition Vs. 50-51
When we truly understand that we are victorious over the enemy because of what Christ has done, and understand that the Lord is our shield, our strength, our high tower.
What else can we do but Give thanks to the Lord & praise the Lord.
Psalm 150:6 The very last Psalm.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
MAYBE....
23 And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. 24 Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
So here they are, beaten… bloody… in the inner prison… locked in stocks.... But notice their response in Vs. 25
25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
They were cursing & complaining at God… oh, wait they weren’t doing that were they? They were praying & praising.
And listen to this, I would even say, they were fighting back.
Put yourself in their situation for a moment, imagine the atmosphere.
You just witnessed a demon possession
You are beaten, bloody
You feet are physically locked & fastened so you can’t move around.
Not only is it dark but there must have been a spiritual darkness looming in their midst.
So what did they do in spite of all that??
“Instead of allowing the atmosphere and circumstances to invade them, they decided to invade the atmosphere of darkness with the presence of God”
I love that! Prayer & Praise are spiritual weapons that we need to be using for not only defense but also for offense.
ENDING.....
