ILLUST: Gotta experience this…Something you have experienced that you just can’t fully explain - has to be experienced
READ: John 1:35-51
Getting to Know the Savior
Getting to Know the Savior
1) The “Place” of Jesus
1) The “Place” of Jesus
Where are you staying?
Question of intent to become His disciples, follow Him
“Place” implies desire for stability, security
Many unstable people want a reliable place to “stay”
Luke 9:58 and Matthew 8:20 sees Jesus saying He has no place to lay His head; but he certainly has, and provides, eternal rest, peace
POINT - Jesus is saying a physical place of security is not crucial, but one’s relationship to God is vital, and it is determined by your trust in Him
(e.g. the security in marriage is not the house you live in, but the relationship with your husband or wife)
When asked where He is staying, Jesus says “Come and see”
HINT: It’s not a physical place, but a spiritual reality
ASIDE: What’s in a name?
Rabbi, Messiah, Cephas (rock), son of....
Believers: “Children of.....” (formerly sons of disobedience - Col 3:6)
Important that we call upon the NAME of the LORD; then you get a new name, a new identity, a child of the Almighty
2) “Finding” Faith
2) “Finding” Faith
Who finds whom? Do you find Jesus? Does He find you?
Andrew here - a helper, bringing people to meet Jesus
Do we find Jesus? He’s not lost, never was.
We were the lost ones
Careful not to take too much of the credit
Though we can find favor, as Noah did
Pursuing holiness, righteousness
Jesus found me - never stopped pursuing me, as He pursues everyone
We don’t climb up to God
No “path” to finding Him, He’s right in front of everyone
He came down here, descended to the lower regions of the world
And when He saved you, He said “Hey, pass it on”
Who has he put in your path, who has He introduced you to who needs to know Jesus personally? (ME - man in Olney)
3) Truly Meeting Jesus - Come and See
3) Truly Meeting Jesus - Come and See
To Nathanael - “Messiah” and “Nazareth” could not coexist
Philip says - Come and see
Philip did not argue with Nathanael, did not address the skepticism, just invited him to come, see, experience
POINT - the best evangelism is genuine, concerned, a loving invitation, proclaiming the truth
Letting the truth carry the day, speak for itself
Nathanael, like other Jews, anticipated the coming King
However, this King came pronouncing eternal peace and rest; made His divine presence known on earth
The King came, proclaiming a kingdom not of here
“Amazes” Nathanael with a minor miracle of “seeing” him
The sarcasm of Jesus, when Nathanael insults Nazareth
The Jews revered Jacob/Israel
“Oh, you are one of the Israelites, (one of Jacob’s people)...could hardly be any deceit here! My mistake!”
Jacob = supplanter, deceiver, hardly a stellar example; yet God used him anyway
Come and see
Not “go and find out”
Not “read a couple things and then decide”
Walk along with me, I’ll introduce you to Jesus
Not “take my word for it”
Come, interact in person
Put aside your assumptions, what you think you know, what hypocrites have done
You, let Jesus deal with you, directly, personally, specifically
He deals with everyone according to the same truth, and yet uniquely to each person.
Same - truth of the Word
God’s Word is universal
Unique - strengths weaknesses, areas to grow, various passions, areas of doubt, temptations, talents, personality
Want to change the world?
Tell someone: Come and see!
People can be told about Jesus, He can be described, but He must be experienced, seen
Great “Come and see” moments in Scripture
Come and see the works of God, Who is awesome in His deeds toward the sons of men.
Samaritan woman a the well
“Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?”
Angels at the tomb
“He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
John, view of glory
Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, “Come.”
When He broke the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come.”
When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come.”
If you haven’t met and given your life to Jesus, what are you waiting for?
If you have “come and seen,” who else have you invited to come and see?
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Go, be an Andrew, invite someone to experience God
Ask people “What are you seeking?”
What is the world seeking? The “right” thing?
We already know, they seek everything BUT Jesus - OK work with that
But…they do want peace
They DO want the peace and joy you know (assuming you do)
What do the lost, the weak in faith, need to experience?
They need to experience, see Christ in you, being the surrendered, sold out, bought with the blood of Jesus, what the Bible says God says God says, take the world but give me Jesus disciple
Saying COME AND SEE
Come and see
Don’t argue - come and see
Jesus will take it from there
