Text - 2 John 7-11
2 John 7–11 NASB 2020
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. 9 Anyone who goes too far and does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.
Title - The Doctrine Of Christ

Background

Among the gospel authors, John was most concerned with the Deity of Christ
he began his Gospel by identifying Christ in the beginning
his Gospel exulted Jesus as the Son of God
his epistles were admonitions and warnings against erroneous doctrines that were spreading in his days

What is the “doctrine of Christ”

What John wrote -
the doctrine about Christ’s origin
2 John 7 NASB 2020
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
Jesus Christ “has come in the flesh” - He came from somewhere!
the Father and the Son
2 John 9 NASB 2020
9 Anyone who goes too far and does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
the doctrine of Christ is all about the relationship between the Father and Son
to know the doctrine is to have the both the Father and the Son
to know this doctrine is the foundation of one’s relationship with God
What John meant - everything that jesus taught about Himself and the Father
that He came from the Father to fulfill His will
that He came to manifest the Father to the world
that He who has seen has seen the Father
that He and the Father are One
that He was going back to the Father
that He had glory with the Father before the world was

“I and the Father are One” - John 10.30

John 10:24–33 NASB 2020
24 The Jews then surrounded Him and began saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26 But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep listen to My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” 31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus replied to them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “We are not stoning You for a good work, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”
Note - the Jews accuse Him of making Himself God
Jesus meant - He is One God with the Father
note - the Jewish confession - “the Lord is One”
Deuteronomy 6:4 NASB 2020
4 “Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!
the word ‘one’ in Deut 6.4 is a noun - an entity, object, person
the word ‘one’ in John 10.30 - is an adjective, describing a noun
it means God is a “single entity”
it means there is no other God beside Him -
Deuteronomy 4:35 NASB 2020
35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord, He is God; there is no other besides Him.
Deuteronomy 4:39 NASB 2020
39 Therefore know today, and take it to your heart, that the Lord, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.
Isaiah 45:5–7 NASB 2020
5 “I am the Lord, and there is no one else; There is no God except Me. I will arm you, though you have not known Me, 6 So that people may know from the rising to the setting of the sun That there is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no one else, 7 The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and creating disaster; I am the Lord who does all these things.
It means the Father and the Son “make up/compose” the One God!

“He who has seen Me has seen the Father also” - John 14.7-9

John 14:7–9 NASB 2020
7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” 8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Jesus meant - He was the manifestation of the God who is Spirit
Colossians 1:15 NASB 2020
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation:
John 1:14 NASB 2020
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:18 NASB 2020
18 No one has seen God at any time; God the only Son, who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained Him.
NLT translation says - John 1.18
John 1:18 NLT
18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.
NIV says - John 1.18
John 1:18 NIV
18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

“Before Abraham was, I am” - John 8.58

John 8:58 NASB 2020
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
Jesus meant - He existed long before Abraham did
He had pre-incarnate existence, because He was the Word from the beginning
John 1:1–3 NASB 2020
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.

“I had glory with the Father before the world was” - John 17.4-5

John 17:4–5 NASB 2020
4 I glorified You on the earth by accomplishing the work which You have given Me to do. 5 And now You, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world existed.
Jesus meant - He was in the beginning with God - John 1.1
John 1:1 NASB 2020
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 NASB 2020
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
the Word was the “only bergotten” of God
grk - monogenes = meaning “unique; radically distinctive; one of a kind”

The doctrine of Christ means -

the Father and the Son make up the One God
they are inseparable - 1 John 1.3
1 John 1:3 NASB 2020
3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.
they are indivisible - 1 John 2.22-24
1 John 2:22–24 NASB 2020
22 Who is the liar except the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, see that what you heard from the beginning remains in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
they are inseparable…
in the beginning
in the incarnation
in the glorification
“Father” and “Son” are relational terminologies
the terms do not identify 2 different persons in the godhead
God is One - Person and Personality
Father and Son relationship came into existence when the Logos was begotten
Hebrews 1:5 NKJV
5 For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”?
the terms make a distinction between the Spirit-God who is invisible, and the Logos which was the visible part of God
the Logos has 3 distinct characteristics -
it is the image of the invisible God
it is the monogene of God
it is the firstborn of the creation of God
“Father” and “Son” became distinct only after the “Word became flesh”
Luke 1:30–35 NASB 2020
30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” 34 But Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also the holy Child will be called the Son of God.
before the incarnation, the Logos had no separate personality
before the incarnation, the Logos was simply God becoming visible in the spirit realm
in the incarnation, the human personality was not a second person
it is the exact representation of the nature of God - Heb 1:3 “And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation (grk. charakter, stamp; facscimile) of His nature (grk. Hypostasis, subtance, person), and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,”
Father and Son distinction will continue until the Son “hands over the kingdom to the Father”
1 Corinthians 15:24–28 NASB 2020
24 then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to our God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death. 27 For He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when He says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is clear that this excludes the Father who put all things in subjection to Him. 28 When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all.
the kingdom - not the Deity
the Son - Son of Man, not Son of God
Son of God - the Logos, eternal / describes his origin
Son of Man - the ministry of the Son of God - “to bring all things scribes his ministry or work
Ephesians 1:10 NASB 2020
10 regarding His plan of the fullness of the times, to bring all things together in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth.
Ephesians 1:10 NLT
10 And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth.

Why remain in the doctrine of Christ

2 John 9 “Anyone who goes too far and does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
The doctrine of Christ helps identify who belongs to God and who does not
it identifies the “believers” from “deceivers
2 John 7 NASB 2020
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
1 John 4:2–3 NASB 2020
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and now it is already in the world.
anyone who does remain in the doctrine does not have God - 2 John 9
2 John 9 NASB 2020
9 Anyone who goes too far and does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
The Doctrine of Christ defines how far we are to go in our beliefs
2 John 9 “9 Anyone who goes too far and does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
goes far -
NIV - runs ahead
CSB - goes beyond
NLT - wanders away
to remain in the doctrine is to have fellowship with God
1 John 1:3 NASB 2020
3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.
to remain in the doctrine is to remain in the Father and in the Son
1 John 2:24 NASB 2020
24 As for you, see that what you heard from the beginning remains in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
to remain in the doctrine is to have confidence at the coming of Christ
1 John 2:28 NASB 2020
28 Now, little children, remain in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not draw back from Him in shame at His coming.

Conclusion

Did you understand the doctrine of Christ, so far? If so -
REMAIN IN THIS DOCTRINE
DO NOT WANDER AWAY FROM THIS DOCTRINE - THIS IS THE APOSTOLIC UNDERSTANDING OF CHRIST
DO NOT ENTERTAIN ANY OTHER DOCTRINE
2 John 10–11 NASB 2020
10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.
