Three Against One

Which side to you think will win?
The Three and the one show up continually in our text today from Romans 8:1-11.

God the Father

Who loves us so much he would do anything to give us the eternal life that sin has stolen from us

Jesus the Son

Who loves us because the Father loves us and has done everything that is needed to free us from sin and save us from death

The Holy Spirit

Who is the presence of the power of God that raises Christ from the Grave and puts the Life God intends and Jesus purchased back into our very souls

Me

My Rebellious Mind
Thinks it can do better than what God have planned for me.
Which shakes its fist at God’s holiness and glory every time it chooses the works of the flesh instead of the works of the Spirit of God.
Which in fact takes another bullet from the real enemy of my soul every time I choose sin.
The enemy of God would rather see me dead than see me live life to the fullest with God.

Wrong Ideas of Independence

The lie that living our own way is better than what our Creator intends for us— living in rebellion to God, living for ourselves, rejecting righteousness which in fact makes us the living Dead.
This short life on earth is an illusion when we live with our minds on the flesh. We think we’ve got our own best interests in mind and we can live our lives better than it would be if we follow God’s righteous rules.
This life is an illusion because it won’t last. To live in sin is to be dead already.
To live in Christ, to walk in the footprints of the Spirit, to allow the grace of God take full effect in your mind and choices and behaviors is to begin now that eternal life that God planned for you all along.
The truth that tells us plainly about this is stated by Paul in
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
It’s three against one in the war for independence.
Most of us have the facts wrong about how this one works out. We think we are fighting for freedom when in fact we are fighting on the wrong side.
Rejecting God’s love and grace and salvation and peace is just plain crazy, but somehow we think that is going make us free.
Romans 7:24 ESV
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
Sin enslaves us, sin lies to us, sin has already bought us a ticket to Hell because that is where we face an eternal dying.
Our soul is eternal. Will you serve the Savior and live forever or serve yourself and for all eternity face the agony of dying?
That is what spiritual death will be when the Lord returns.
But God has planned something better for us.

Christ Jesus, My Acquittal

Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Set Free in Christ Jesus

Romans 8:2 ESV
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

God Provides A Righteous Rescue

Romans 8:3 ESV
3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,

Free to Follow the Footsteps of the Spirit

Romans 8:4 ESV
4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

What Are You Thinking About?

Romans 8:5 ESV
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

Choice’s Consequence

Romans 8:6 ESV
6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

Our Sin is Selfishness

Romans 8:7 ESV
7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.

A Simple Conclusion

Romans 8:8 ESV
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
It’s three against one. You cannot win if you make your life all about you.

God’s Gift Is Christ

Romans 8:9 ESV
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

Christ is Our Life

Romans 8:10 ESV
10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

God Restores Life by His Spirit

Romans 8:11 ESV
11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
The Battle for Life is Won By the Three, not the One!
The Spirit
Him who raised
Christ Jesus
The Spirit In You Brings the Life and Peace we all need.
Eternal Life Begins Now In Our Mortal Bodies — our Redeemed Flesh— When we walk in the footsteps of the Spirit.
How is your battle? Where do you need to surrender?
Every war in history ends in one of two ways: the defeated either surrenders or dies.
Obedience is better than sacrifice, the Scripture tells us.

Surrender to God is better than sacrificing ourselves to sin.
