SERMON TITLE

My Genuine Love for God Is Truly Seen In My Genuine Acts of Mercy to My Neighbor

Luke 10:25–26 ESV
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?”
Luke 10:27 ESV
And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
Luke 10:28–29 ESV
And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ARE PASSER BY-ERS. THEY ARE SUCH BECAUSE THEY ARE:
- Selfishness: Not My Problem
o In seeking to be religious We end up misrepresent God as uncaring and without compassion

THE PROBLEM WITH RELIGIOUS PEOPLE

Luke 10:30 ESV
Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead.
Luke 10:31–32 ESV
Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

A The Problem of Selfishness: They are not my problem

o In seeking to be religious We end up misrepresent God as uncaring and without compassion

B. The Problem of Self-Righteousness: I Cannot Touch Him

o We do to them the same thing the sin has done to them
§ The priest and the Levite behave no differently than the thieves

C. The Problem of Sinful Evaluation: They are not worthy of my time

Judge people on the basis of our perception of importance: They are not worthy of my time (gotta keep going)

SINFUL evaluation means that they evaluate it who their neighbor works based on cultural and convenience methods. They based it on what they perceive to be valuable, and who they perceive to be worthy of their time..

II. THE PROOFS OF THE RIGHTEOUS

A. Showing Mercy Is the Affection of Those Made Righteous In Christ

o The Samaritan had compassion—a Greek expression built on the word for a person’s inner parts, the seat of emotions and feelings.
§ He showed compassion because he was a compassionate person

§ Mercy moves you to help even if the person does not and cannot ask for help

ADDRESSES THE AFFECTS OF SIN ON A PERSON NOT THE REALITY SIN IN THE PERSON

Mercy addresses the conditions of people not the sinfulness of people BUT when we address the condition of people that opens the door to speak to their sinful condition and the mercy of God:

Matthew 9:36 ESV
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Matthew 15:32 ESV
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”

We do not judge their sin because that is not our job

· Note that he did not ask any questions regarding the man’s plight

· Sometimes when we see people affected by conditions of life that are adverse - we judge by asking questions.

B. Showing Mercy Is Action of the Righteous Making the World Right

Mercy Sees People

He Saw the man

Seeing The Need As A Reason To Stop What They Were Doing
Luke 10:33 ESV
But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.

Mercy Invests In People

Luke 10:34 ESV
He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.

Mercy Continually Provides

Luke 10:35 ESV
And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’

C. Mercy Is Divinely Rewarded

Psalm 18:25 ESV
With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
Matthew 5:7 ESV
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
