Thompson Chain Bible Book Outlines The First Epistle to the Corinthians

PURPOSE: To purify the church from divisions and immorality. The church at Corinth was founded by Paul on his second missionary journey. It had become infected with the evils surrounding it in a licentious city. The Greeks were proud of their learning and philosophy, but at the same time were addicted to gross immorality. They were especially fond of oratory. It is apparent that Apollos, an eloquent Christian Jew, had come to Corinth and captured the imaginations of the Greek Christians,

Paul expounds the nature of the gospel as divine wisdom over against human wisdom since the latter lies at the source of their divisions (1:18–4:13).

The first relates to 1:30 where God’s work in Christ is what makes them who they are.
2. “What do you have that you did not receive?”
The second relates to the thanksgiving section in 1:4–9, where they have been reminded that they have been enriched in every way in Christ, and especially with respect to the abundance of the gifts they have been given.
3. “ If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?”
The third explains why their boasting is totally inappropriate, for their gifts were not self-generated nor did they arise from privilege or status, even though their boasting would suggest that they did.
