The Court:

Text: Exodus 27:9-19
The court is laid out as the area that surrounds the Tabernacle. It measured one-hundred and seventy-five feet long and eighty-seven and a half feet wide. Which is exactly half as wide as it was long. It was enclosed by hangings of fine twined linen which hung from sixty pillars, twenty on each side, and ten on each end. Four of the pillars on the eastern wall were seen in our previous lesson on the pillars. This was the gate or entrance into the court.
· We know that the Tabernacle was the dwelling place of God, and the camp was the allotted dwelling place of man.
The Court Hangings:
Fine Twined Linen: Exodus 35:23-25, 35. Exodus 38:9, 16
Exodus 35:23 KJV 1900
And every man, with whom was found blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair, and red skins of rams, and badgers’ skins, brought them.
Exodus 35:25 KJV 1900
And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen.
Exodus 35:35 KJV 1900
Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.
Exodus 38:9 KJV 1900
And he made the court: on the south side southward the hangings of the court were of fine twined linen, an hundred cubits:
Exodus 38:16 KJV 1900
All the hangings of the court round about were of fine twined linen.
In the linen you have the Man Christ Jesus! Linen was made from flax and since flax comes up from out of the earth, it is a symbol of the humanity of Christ. The One Who has been given to offer atonement on behalf of man!
The Process of Obtaining Linen:
1. The Planning - 1 Peter 1:19-20
1 Peter 1:19–20 KJV 1900
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
2. The Promise - Isaiah 53:10
Isaiah 53:10 KJV 1900
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, He shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
3. The Preparation - Luke 1:17
Luke 1:17 KJV 1900
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
4. The Sowing- Luke 1:31
Luke 1:31 KJV 1900
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
5. The Growing- Luke 2:52
Luke 2:52 KJV 1900
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
6. The Retting - (Retting was a process in which the flax was soaked in water to prepare it for its final processing.) Matthew 3:13
Matthew 3:13 KJV 1900
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
7. Spreading the flax- The process in which the flax was spread out over an area for the purpose of drying. John 18:20
John 18:20 KJV 1900
Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
8. Breaking the flax - This process was a bending of the flax over wood to separate the components. Mark 14:38
Mark 14:38 KJV 1900
Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
9. Scutching the flax- The process in which the flax is beaten over a scutching board. Isaiah 53:5
Isaiah 53:5 KJV 1900
But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.
10. Combing the flax- This is the final step in the process to make the linen ready for spinning. The flax was combed over by a comb that was essentially a bed of nails that had been fastened to wood. Luke 23:33
Luke 23:33 KJV 1900
And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
11. Spinning the flax into linen - John 19:40
John 19:40 KJV 1900
Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
11. Linen- 1 Corinthians 15:3, Revelation 19:8
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 KJV 1900
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
Revelation 19:8 KJV 1900
And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
So far our study has shown the Tabernacle in all of its parts, accessories, and detail as bringing us to our Lord, His being, His work, and His glory. Our study today is no different. Remember the Court Hangings stood between the camp and the presence of God. Therefore the linen is a picture of Christ’s humanity, but in connection with the pillars, it’s chapiters, and its sockets, it represents Him filling the office between God and man.
This position is what we would call a Mediator.
The Scripture speaks of our Lord Jesus Christ as the mediator between God and man.
1 Timothy 2:5, Hebrews 8:6, Hebrews 12:24
1 Timothy 2:5 KJV 1900
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Hebrews 8:6 KJV 1900
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Hebrews 12:24 KJV 1900
And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
A mediator is one who takes an accepted and official position between two parties...
He is the go-between...
A mediator is under bond to offer something that will satisfy the parties involved.
It is by satisfying the claims that divided that he is able to reconcile them, harmonize their difference, and make them friends.
In this Court Hanging there are three things to be noted:
1. The Linen - The humanity of Christ and death on the cross.
2. The chapiters (tops) of the pillars made from silver. (Silver being a picture of atonement)
3. The sockets (bottoms) being made of brass.
Brass is the same metal that the brazen altar is made of, and the reason for this is because brass will stand the test of fire. Fire throughout Scripture is a symbol of the judgment of God. Isaiah 29:6, 30:30, 66:15
Isaiah 29:6 KJV 1900
Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts With thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, With storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.
Isaiah 30:30 KJV 1900
And the Lord shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, And shall shew the lighting down of his arm, With the indignation of his anger, And with the flame of a devouring fire, With scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.
Isaiah 66:15 KJV 1900
For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, And with his chariots like a whirlwind, To render his anger with fury, And his rebuke with flames of fire.
There is only one thing that can stand the test of fire of God’s divine judgment and that is righteousness.
The best righteousness of the best man offered to God would be an offence to Him...
The best righteousness of the best man offered to God is nothing better in His sight than rags, and not merely rags, but the foulest and most unclean rags that there ever has been offered… Isaiah 64:6
Isaiah 64:6 KJV 1900
But we are all as an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; And we all do fade as a leaf; And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Under the devouring fire of God’s judgment, man’s best offer of righteousness would be turned to ashes, ruined, consumed, and utterly destroyed.
What man needs is a righteousness that will meet the demand of God’s holiness.
That is because man has utterly failed, because he is a violator of God’s law, wholly unrighteous and unclean before Him. Therefore a living, holy and righteous God demands atonement, satisfaction from the sinner.
That satisfaction is found in the death of the sinner.
Man needs righteousness in order to be saved and appear in the presence of God.
God demands atonement for man’s lack of righteousness.
But… There is a remedy:
If there was One that would make an atonement for man, an atonement sufficient in meeting all of the requirements of God’s righteousness. Then and only then would God give man the righteousness needed and accept him. In this act, man would be reconciled, and not longer the enemy of God, but friends.
The answer for all of this is in the “court”.
In the silver tops of the pillars you have atonement.
In the brazen base you have righteousness.
In the linen you have the Man Christ Jesus! The One Who has been given as that atonement on behalf of man!
By His sacrificial death He provides that atonement.
He becomes obedient unto death for man, meaning that He meets his sentence and removes his guilt.
He offers this obedience unto death on behalf of the believing sinner.
God the Father then accepts that act of obedience as the obedience of the believer, imputes it to him, charges it over to his credit. The believer becomes all at once legally righteous in the sight of God; but that is not all, for not only did Christ die for us but the righteousness that we received is His!
Romans 3:22
Romans 3:22 KJV 1900
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
On that basis the risen Son of God gives eternal life to the believer, joins him to Himself.
1 Corinthians 6:17
1 Corinthians 6:17 KJV 1900
But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
But that’s not all...
He is joined to the Lord’s risen and glorified body.
Ephesians 5:30
Ephesians 5:30 KJV 1900
For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
The believer is united to a complete Lord! The Lord becomes to him his essential and organic righteousness, and the believer in Him becomes the very righteousness of the righteous God.
2 Corinthians 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV 1900
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
By this mediation God and man have been brought together and are at one in Christ.
The linen court with the silver tops and brazen bases of the pillars set before us is our great Mediator!
