INTRODUCTION....
(Recap)....For those at home on Facebook and for our visitors today, for the past few Sundays we have been preaching a series on salvation....
salvation.... the deliverance of the soul from sin and its consequences
For the 1st Sunday, we looked at the disobedient Israelite. As they were on their way to the promised after 40 yrs and all that God had done for them the still were complaining because God took them a longer route..
God sent serpents, and when they where bitten they died. But being who God is, He didn’t take the serpents away but he provided an antidote.
He had Moses make a bronze serpent and set it in the middle of the camp and when some got bit, all the had to do was look up at the bronze serpent…TALK, PREACH.....(in spite of our ways, God always has a way to bail us out.)
Next we looked at Paul as he was talking to the Thessalonian church. Paul let the church know that they were chosen for salvation.... 2 Thessalonians 2:13 “But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,” ....TALK, PREACH.....
And as I was looking over the theme for the retreat, which is one of my favorite scriptures, John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
I especially love that 14th verse… John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
But I am gonna save that for later on. However, my eyes and mind was opened and the Spirit hit me with todays lesson, Salvation through the Word....
And not just any word but the word of God…the everlasting word....the word that was in the beginning, the word that became flesh....TALK, PREACH...
And as scripture lets us know over in Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”” …PREACH...
When you sit back and think about, people are quick to listen to gossip and sometimes end up believing it without any proof..
Just gonna take someones word for it. Well let me tell, when it comes to Gods word, you can believe it and there is proof....preacher where’s the proof, I AM A LIVING TESTIMONY....TALK, PREACH.....
And the process is so simple and Paul lays it out for the church in Rome in his letter to them. We may not have the same issues as them, but we have some issues, the process that he laid out for them still stands today. For every man, woman, boy and girl to get the free gift of salvation.
Let’s walk in the text....
What we know about the letter...Biblical scholars agree that it was composed by Paul the Apostle to explain that salvation is offered through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
That was the main reason but Paul had several other reason as well....
Paul wished to conquer the world for Christ and with Rome being the power house it was Paul understood that a conquered Rome would equal a conquered world…TALK..rome major city,
Paul was the Apostle for the gentiles and the Roman church was primaryly made up of Gentiles....TALK
Rome had all of the characteritstics needed To spread the good news and let the world see how Christ moved thru Rome
Rome had a worldwide reputation, it was a gentile church, it was a perscuted church but lastly it was a triumphant church…TALK
Paul had to first make sure they understood that salvation thru the gospel was for everyone…TALK (we need to understand that today)
He clears that up in verses 10 thru 13.....Romans 10:10-13 “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”” (WORK TEXT)
2 keys words here, confession and believing...
let’s keep walking...
As we come to our text for today, Paul now asks a series of rhetorical questions to establish that salvation comes from responding to the gospel message.
Paul traces the process that makes obtaining salvation possible....
The process....(1) messengers are sent; (2) they declare the Word; (3) sinners hear the Word; (4) sinners believe the Word; (5) they call upon Christ; (6) they are saved!..(REPEAT)
The argument here is simply that sinners cannot be saved apart from the Word of God, for “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”
Salvation through the word....
Look at the text....Romans 10:14 “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?”
Paul has simple put these questions in reverse of the actual process....(reread v14)
Now this text has been used a lot for pastor anniversies and such but when we look at the translation of the orginial greek, the word preacher has several meanings....to proclaim, to publish, public proclamation....in other words someone is talking about something openly and to everyone...
Dr. Kenneth Boa, sayS that the vehicle of the gospel is proclamation....TALK....
I am not gonna harp on whose a preacher or not a preacher but i will harp and say that everything that has breath....TALK
CSB Apologetics Study Bible Chapter 10
those who know the truth must spare no effort to proclaim it to others, for salvation is at stake.
Church we must be the mouth and go and declare the word to others…it comes by hearing....
that right there is steps 1 and 2 in the process....(1) messengers are sent; (2) they declare the Word; and the 3rd question in the text...
here’s some good news about going out and being about God’s business....The witness who bears the Gospel to the lost (whether Gentile or Jew) certainly has “beautiful feet” in the eyes of God.
What is being declared, the word of God....the written word and the living word....
So the people in Rome are hearing and guess what they are starting to believe.....steps 3 and 4 in the process...(3) sinners hear the Word; (4) sinners believe the Word; and the 2nd question in the text...
Romans C. The Vehicle of the Gospel Is Proclamation (10:14–15)
God has ordained that people have to hear (or read, or otherwise understand the content of) the word of God in order to be saved
Quick side note.....Hebrews 4:2 “For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.”
Woe unto those that do not believe....TALK, PREACH...
But just as the Romans, we too need to hear the word…the gospel....not just us on the inside today but even those on the outside....
believe it or not there are some that are in somebodies church right now and still may not believe.....TALK, PREACH…
But we do know that if they keep hearing and experience the true power of the Holy Spirit…Good God…let them see how the word change you.....TALK, PREACH....
So we are out there doing our job as disciples and true believers…The people are hearing and reacting to the word of God and now they call upon His holy name....(5) they call upon Christ
At first the were calling upon idols but when they heard the good news and started believing they started calling upon the God of the Jews, the God that was now the God of them all thru His son Jesus Christ....
The started to realize the gospel is about peace, this gospel is about love, about mercy and about grace....this gospel was about salvation....
These Roman gentiles had heard and started believing and became saved....
I know i am talking to some saved and sanctified folks in hear but has anyone in hear heard the good news...
does anyone believe the good news.....
is anyone in here saved.....
Ok for those of that might still have some doubt, I need to let you know that salvation comes thru the word of God....
so it’s my duty to share it with you right now.....TALK, PREACH, CLOSE....
