As we continue our way through this section of Matthew, the theme continues to be on Jesus’ compassionate authority and the discipleship we are called to as a proper response to Jesus’ authority. When the crowd was amazed at the authority of Jesus’ teaching, they were only beginning to see that authority displayed. Jesus has authority over all things. Two weeks ago we saw his authority displayed over sickness, last week we saw the nature of discipleship in response to that authority as being absolute. If we are going to follow this Lord over all things, we must do so with our whole heart. Now, the attention turns back to Jesus authority, this time over nature and the supernatural.
Jesus has authority over all that happens in the world, whether seen or unseen. Nature is subject to his word, the spirits are subject to his word, and even the authority to forgive sins is in his power. This gives us great hope and confidence in following him, but it also highlights the need to follow him wholeheartedly. We know that if we lay down our lives in the service of this Christ, we have assurance of his authority to protect us from perils both physical and spiritual and, most importantly of all, his authority to forgive us our sins.
