Review:
God’s PLA for the earth; to be filled w his image
Sin stymied God’s PLA
God started over:
First by kicking Adam and Eve out of the garden
Made the a promise (Gen 3:15)
Then by the flood
Also a promise
Where does the arrow point?
God holds himself hostage to his own word!
Then stars over at the Tower of Babel
Almost all the nations that troubled Israel in the future comes from cursed Ham...
They build a tower to circumvent God’s plan because they did not want to do God’s will; cover the earth with His image - which is exactly what happened anyway.
Religion is born, judgement happens
What was the judgement? Confusion of languages.
How did God bring humanity back together? Unified language in Acts 2.
Genesis 12: Abraham
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
The promise of a child that will save everyone.
So through the flood and the Tower of Babel, God has kept a person to himself.
We come to the next chosen child that would save the world.
Remember, OT could only push your sins ahead and not take them away.
SO generation by generation there was one born, all in anticipation that somewhere in the future, one would be born to take away sin not just push it ahead!
1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
Now we will begin a journey from an individual finding grace to a people group/nation.
Three part promise to Abram:
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
Great nation
This fulfills Gen. 1:28! Be fruitful and multiply
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
2. Abrahamic blessing
a. This is the fulfilment of Adam and Eves mission and purpose, to fill the whole earth with the image of God!
Gen12.1
1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
3. Promised the Land of Canaan
a. The promised land
Abraham is a type of Christ!
9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
This is the Abrahamic promise in NT fulfilment!
A great innumerable family, blessed and blessing others with the Good News, motivated by the promise of a place to live for ever!
Through Jesus the world is blessed!
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
Conclusion:
Jesus is the one who brings us all into the promised land…
Like Eden, the Promised Land was not intended to be a specific geographical place but a starting place for the explosion of God’s glory and the multiplication of His image!
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
You are the tabernacle.
God is in YOU!
You are Eden, The Promised Land
GO and produce his image EVERYWHERE!
Next week: Genesis 13.14
Abram, Lot and Melchizedek
