These verses explain the moral test for salvation -> In order to understand this properly, we must keep the former verses in mind
Know that we Know Him (v. 3)
Know that we Know Him (v. 3)
Praise God we can have assurance of salvation, for without it we are most miserable (Acts 20:22-24; Lk. 14:25-35)
This knowledge is different (beyond intellectual knowledge)
It is knowledge found at the core of your soul, containing an intellectual, moral, and spiritual element (Jn. 20:24-29) -> Habakkuk study
The False Believer vs. the Genuine Believer (vv. 3-5)
The False Believer vs. the Genuine Believer (vv. 3-5)
Verse 4 presents harsh accusations
Liar -> not deceived, but outright lying -> not being transformed is obvious (1 Jn. 1:5-6)
Truth not in him -> totally void of the truth and not to be trusted as a teaching source (Jn. 3:1-12)
Keeping God’s commandments is not a requirement for salvation, but the effect of it (vv. 3, 5-6; Phil. 2:12-18)
Keeping is the standard, not knowing -> requires but exceeds simple knowledge (Rom. 2:12-13, 17-25)
Love of God is perfected -> believer’s love towards God (powered by God’s love for them - 1 Jn. 4:19)
They know they are in Him -> YOU are the blessed man! (Ps. 32:1-2) -> We are in God, and He in us, this through the working of the Holy Spirit
Walking as He Walked (v. 6)
Walking as He Walked (v. 6)
This verse beautifully, emphatically, and in convicting fashion summarizes the moral test
It is not just keeping some rules, but being a personal disciple (being in Him)
It involves loving God and neighbor, having concern for the lost, loving the church, and the total sacrifice of self
Anything else waters down salvation
