UNDERSTANDING WATER BAPTISM!
Mark 16:15 And Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world, and preach the GOSPEL to all creation!
Mark 16:16 He who has BELIEVED and has been BAPTIZED shall be saved; but he who has DISBELIEVED shall be condemned!
I. WHO Should Be Water Baptized?
John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit!
When we are born of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit baptizes us into Jesus. After the Holy Spirit baptizes us into Jesus, then a Disciple needs to Baptize us in Water!
Mark 16:16 He who HAS believed and has been baptized shall be saved; BUT He who HAS disbelieved shall be condemned!
Acts 8:36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?”
Acts 8:37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may!” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!”
II. HOW Should We Be Water Baptized?
Mark 1:10 . . . Immediately coming UP out of the water, Jesus saw the heavens opening . . .
Acts 8:39 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went DOWN into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him!
There are at least Three (3), common methods of baptism:
A. SPRINKLING:
Does not illustrate the death, burial and resurrection
B. POURING: Does not illustrate the death, burial and resurrection
C. IMMERSING: Does illustrate the death, burial and resurrection
Immersing BACKWARD: Pictures our death, burial and resurrection!
Immersing FORWARD: Pictures our coming out of death and going forward into our destiny!
III. WHY Should We Be Water Baptized?
Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
1) OBEDIENCE to GOD!
Mark 16:16 He who HAS believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned!
Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins.
2)IDENTIFICATION with CHRIST!
Romans 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
Romans 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life!
3) NOTIFICATION to our PAST!
Romans 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, IN ORDER THAT our body of sin might be done away with, SO THAT we would no longer be slaves to sin 7 for he who has died is freed from sin!
When we are being water baptized, we invite our past into the water with us. The water is a coffin, and a coffin is something that dead people or things are placed in to be buried. Water Baptism is designed to be the burial service of our past, our addictions, our abuse, or demons, etc.
When we are being baptized, we are Notifying our Past that our old self has died, it is being buried and that person does not exist anymore!
4) AFFIRMATION to our SOUL!
Mark 1:9-11 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan! Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening and the Spirit, like a dove descending upon Him; and a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased!”
5) ANTICIPATION of our FUTURE!
Romans 6:3 We are buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in a new way of life!
1 Corinthians 15:20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep!
Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power; but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years!
