Daddy’s Job:
Make God’s Truth Known to Children!
Isaiah 38: 1-8 New Living Translation
1
About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill, and the prophet
Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this message:
“This is what the Lord says: ‘Set your affairs in order, for you are
going to die. You will not recover from this illness.’”
2
When Hezekiah heard this, he turned his face to the wall and
prayed to the Lord, 3 “Remember, O Lord, how I have always been
faithful to you and have served you single-mindedly, always doing
what pleases you.” Then he broke down and wept bitterly.
Then this message came to Isaiah from the Lord: 5 “Go back to
Hezekiah and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your
ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears.
4
I will add fifteen years to your life, 6 and I will rescue you and this
city from the king of Assyria. Yes, I will defend this city.
“And this is the sign from the Lord to prove that he will do as he
promised: 8 I will cause the sun’s shadow to move ten steps
backward on the sundial of Ahaz!” So the shadow on the sundial
moved backward ten steps.

When Hezekiah is taken seriously ill, he earnestly prays for lengthened
life, and the God of David his father grants him 15 more years.
As a sign that he will recover and that his arch rival, King Sennacherib
will be repulsed, God promises to make the shadow on the sundial of
Ahaz go ten degrees backward.
Seemingly, Ahaz had built an obelisk with steps leading up to it for
telling time, and that God miraculously caused the shadow to decline ten
degrees while Hezekiah watched.
To celebrate his recovery, Hezekiah wrote a poem or psalm. It opens
with the sadness that filled him when he heard that he was going to die
in the prime of his life.
He will not see YAH, the Lord, that is, experience the goodness of the
Lord, and he will be cut off from the rest of mankind.
His life is ending as if a shepherd’s tent is being taken down, or a
finished fabric cut off from the loom. He describes his sense of
desolation, his bitterness, his earnest supplication, and his helplessness
under the stroke of God.
Isaiah 38: 9-12
9
This is the writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been
sick and had recovered from his sickness:
10
I said,
“In the prime of my life
I shall go to the gates of Sheol;
I am deprived of the remainder of my years.”
11
I said,
“I shall not see Yah,
The Lord in the land of the living;
I shall observe man no more among the inhabitants of the world.
12
My life span is gone,
Taken from me like a shepherd’s tent;
I have cut off my life like a weaver.
He cuts me off from the loom;
From day until night You make an end of me.
But his change comes in verse 16 . . .
16
O Lord, by these things men live;
And in all these things is the life of my spirit;
So You will restore me and make me live.
Here, Hezekiah acknowledges that by these afflictions “men live,” and
that they have a beneficial influence on man’s character. What
Hezekiah realizes is that God has delivered him from dying which stood
as an indication that the Lord had forgiven him of his sin.
He realized that because the Lord spared his life [that he is not dead but
alive] and as a result, he must give thanks to the Lord and tell his
children of the faithfulness of God.
This is huge. Because what this is saying is: That men invariably say
on their dying bed or express in their old age – if they could do things
over again – they would value their time with their kids more.
Such is the case with Hezekiah. Upon having his life extended by 15
additional years by the Lord, among his top priorities as a FATHER was
to factor in his KIDS. And what did that translate into:
Listen to verse 19 . . .
19
The living, the living man, he shall praise You,
As I do this day;
The father shall make known Your truth to the children.
As one of the beneficial influences realized in the face of death, but
being brought back to life, Hezekiah came to conclude that one of the
primary responsibilities of a FATHER is to: “Make known GOD’s
truth to the children.”
What are some of those truths. Here are three of them in honor of our
fathers on Father’s Day:
The first truth fathers must make known is:
• Who His God Is! Who you will serve! Which God or What God
you serve. This is the strongest determining factor of who your
children will serve.
Joshua 24:15
And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods
which your fathers served that were on the other side of the
River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.
But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
The SECOND truth fathers must make known is:
• Why You Serve. Three Reasons; One – a straight forward truth
and Two others as Spoken by Jesus.
Here’s the straight forward truth:
Romans 3: 21-24 [NKJV]
21
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is
revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even
the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all
and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have
sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely
by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
The second truth is found in John 3:1-21 [KJV] ~ It is Jesus’
conversation with a Preacher named Nicodemus . . .
1
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler
of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him,
“Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for
no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to
you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of
God.”
3
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is
old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and
be born?”
4
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is
born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of
God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is
born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you,
‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes,
and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes
from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the
Spirit.”
5
Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things
be?”
9
Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of
Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say
to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have
seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you
earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I
tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but
He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who
is in heaven.
10
14
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so
must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in
Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so
loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting
life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn
the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does
not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed
in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the
condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men
loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20
For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not
come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he
who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be
clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
18
The second truth rests in a conversation Jesus had with a 12
preachers and a mega church congregation. It is found in,
John 6:67-69 New King James Version. Listen in on the tail end
of the conversation:
Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go
away?”
67
But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we
go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also we have come
to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the
living God.”
68
Context:
John 6: 60
60
Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said,
“This is a hard saying; who can understand it?”
Heard what? . . . . The Words Jesus spoke in verses 53-56
“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the
Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54
Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life,
and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food
indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh
and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.
53
Resume again . . . .
60
Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said,
“This is a hard saying; who can understand it?”
61
When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained
about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What
then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was
before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits
nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are
life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For
Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not
believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said,
“Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me
unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
66
From that time many of His disciples went back and walked
with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you
also want to go away?”
But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we
go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also we have come
to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the
living God.”
68
John 3:16
Deuteronomy 12: 29-32
The THIRD truth fathers must make known is:
• How You Will Serve.
Deuteronomy 12: 29-32
“When the Lord your God goes ahead of you and destroys
the nations and you drive them out and live in their land, 30 do
not fall into the trap of following their customs and
worshiping their gods. Do not inquire about their gods,
saying, ‘How do these nations worship their gods? I want to
follow their example.’
31
You must not worship the Lord your God the way the other
nations worship their gods, for they perform for their gods
every detestable act that the Lord hates. They even burn their
sons and daughters as sacrifices to their gods. 32 “So be
careful to obey all the commands I give you. You must not
add anything to them or subtract anything from them.
29
1 Corinthians 10: 1-14 New King James Version
1
Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all
our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2
all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate
the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink.
For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and
that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well
pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6
Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we
should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not
become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The
people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8 Nor let
us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one
day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us [a]tempt Christ, as
some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents;
10
nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were
destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to
them as examples, and they were written for our admonition
[warning], upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
12
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
13
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to
man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted
beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also
make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
14
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
Leftovers for the Lord and Second Rate for the Lord
Malachi 1:7-9 addresses Leftovers [New Living Translation]
“You have shown contempt by offering defiled sacrifices on my
altar.
7
“Then you ask, ‘How have we defiled the sacrifices?’
“You defile them by saying the altar of the Lord deserves no respect.
8
When you give blind animals as sacrifices, isn’t that wrong? And
isn’t it wrong to offer animals that are crippled and diseased? Try
giving gifts like that to your governor, and see how pleased he is!”
says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
“Go ahead, beg God to be merciful to you! But when you bring
that kind of offering, why should he show you any favor at all?”
asks the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
9
Haggai 1:4-6 [New Living Translation]
“Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in
ruins? 5 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at
what’s happening to you! 6 You have planted much but harvest little.
You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put
on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though
you were putting them in pockets filled with holes!
4
First Fruits:
Proverbs 3:8-10 New King James Version
8
It will be health to your flesh,
And strength to your bones.
9
Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10
So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.
Fathers assume the role of Teaching and Training your Sons and
Daughters how to serve God’s purposes:
Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will
not depart from it.
Ephesians 6:4
And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring
them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
Bind them about your neck.
Daddy’s Job:
Make God’s Truth Known to Children!
Isaiah 38 New King James Version
Hezekiah’s Life Extended
1
In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the
prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, “Thus says the
Lord: ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.’ ”
2
Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the Lord,
3
and said, “Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before
You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what is good in Your
sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
And the word of the Lord came to Isaiah, saying, 5 “Go and tell
Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: “I have
heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will add to your days
fifteen years.
4
6
I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria,
and I will defend this city.” ’ 7 And this is the sign to you from the Lord,
that the Lord will do this thing which He has spoken:
8
Behold, I will bring the shadow on the sundial, which has gone down
with the sun on the sundial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward.” So the sun
returned ten degrees on the dial by which it had gone down.
9
This is the writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick
and had recovered from his sickness:
10
I said,
“In the prime of my life
I shall go to the gates of Sheol;
I am deprived of the remainder of my years.”
11
I said,
“I shall not see Yah,
The Lord in the land of the living;
I shall observe man no more among the inhabitants of the world.
12
My life span is gone,
Taken from me like a shepherd’s tent;
I have cut off my life like a weaver.
He cuts me off from the loom;
From day until night You make an end of me.
13
I have considered until morning—
Like a lion,
So He breaks all my bones;
From day until night You make an end of me.
14
Like a crane or a swallow, so I chattered;
I mourned like a dove;
My eyes fail from looking upward.
O Lord, I am oppressed;
Undertake for me!
15
“What shall I say?
He has both spoken to me,
And He Himself has done it.
I shall walk carefully all my years
In the bitterness of my soul.
16
O Lord, by these things men live;
And in all these things is the life of my spirit;
So You will restore me and make me live.
17
Indeed it was for my own peace
That I had great bitterness;
But You have lovingly delivered my soul from the pit of corruption,
For You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
18
For Sheol cannot thank You,
Death cannot praise You;
Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.
19
The living, the living man, he shall praise You,
As I do this day;
The father shall make known Your truth to the children.
20
“The Lord was ready to save me;
Therefore we will sing my songs with stringed instruments
All the days of our life, in the house of the Lord.”
Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a lump of figs, and apply it as a
poultice on the boil, and he shall recover.”
21
And Hezekiah had said, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the
house of the Lord?”
22
