Recap the week
All week, we’ve looked at different conversations Jesus had with twenty different people people.
Leper/Soldier, Samaritan, Martha, the Syrophencian lady, the twelve disciples, Nicodemus, the thief, even His Father.
There were religious people, there were people who had serious problems, there were people who were scared, there were people who had rough lives.
The hope of this week is that you would be able to leave camp able to pray to our heavenly Father.
To spend time in the presence of God
To enjoy life with Jesus
There’s one more conversation Jesus had that we need to look at.
His conversation with you.
This is the most important conversation you will ever have.
Matthew 11:25–30 (ESV)
Matthew 11:25–27 ESV
25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Jesus briefly prays this prayer that shows us His relationship with the Father.
It must have been amazing to see Jesus pray to His Father in the Spirit.
We see the Trinity at work in perfect community and love here.
Jesus prayer teaches us that He alone knows the Father (v. 27)
This is more than the type of know that we talk about with our friends
This is a deeper type of knowing.
He’s the only one that has been in the presence of God, and the reason He came was so that we can be too!
This means that only Jesus can reveal the Father.
There is no other way to know God except through faith in Jesus.
Jesus came so that we can know the true God.
The world is full of false gods that people give their lives to, but they will not go to heaven and spend eternity with God.
Jesus alone leads us to the true and living God who gives grace and salvation to those who trust in Jesus as Lord!
Jesus came to reveal God to us and bring us back from our sin.
Jesus thanked the Father for hiding these things from the wise and educated.
The people who think they have God figure out, God has hidden this salvation.
But we learn that God has revealed Himself to “little children” (v. 25).
This means that it’s nothing you can do, how much you know, or anything.
Your salvation comes from God.
He gives you the gift of faith to believe!
It is totally God who draws you to Himself!
It was by God’s design that you were at this camp this week!
It was by God’s plan that you had the cabin leaders you did
It was by God’s plan that you heard the Bible preached to you.
You’re not here on accident.
God has been drawing you to Himself.
Jesus has revealed Himself to you in His Word
Has He revealed Himself to your soul?
After praying, Jesus breaks the fourth wall.
Imagine if Jesus finished praying and looks directly at you and says: “Come to me.”
Matthew 11:28–30 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Some of you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.
Some of you have burdens to carry that you shouldn’t.
Some of you have baggage from past regrets.
Some of you carry the weights of anxiety: “I hope no one finds out about...”
Jesus invites you to come to Him and He will give you rest.
Jesus took the weight of your sin from you, why would you still try to carry it?
He calls us to come and learn from Him, because He’s gentle and lowly.
Don’t look at Jesus as if He’s scowling at you.
He’s gentle. He’s lowly.
Jesus wont shame you or throw you away, He’ll greet you with a warm welcome.
Are you willing to have this conversation with Jesus?
“Jesus, I’m tried of trying to hide from you. I’m a sinner and I need you to give me rest. I need you to give me love and grace and forgiveness.”
We want to give each of you time to respond to Jesus calling you.
For Christians, perhaps coming to Jesus looks like surrendering perfectionism—Thinking you have to be perfect at following Jesus. You need the rest of Jesus.
Maybe you’ve been so rigid in serving Christ that you’ve missed the beauty of just being with Him.
If you’re not a Christian, you can put off the guilt of your sin and give it to Jesus.
God will welcome you in His Kingdom joyfully.
If you want to be a Christian, we want to celebrate with you.
There is absolutely nothing like someone coming from dead in sin to alive in Christ.
I’m going to ask you to do something kind of bold and tell us by raising your hand.
We’ll have the counselors over at the table ready to pray with you and answer any questions you may have about what it means to follow Jesus.
I want you to be Christians. I want you to experience the joy and life in Christ that He has let me have. I want you to spend eternity with Jesus.
When you leave this place, it isn’t easy.
You’re not as present with other Christians as you are here.
You’re not encouraged to read your Bible like you are here.
Stay in the Bible. Stay in prayer with Jesus.
Find people who know how to pray and pray with them!
Find a church who preaches the gospel and study Scripture with them.
Don’t stop following Jesus just because camp ended. Grow in your relationship with Jesus so that you can tell other’s of the joy and treasure you’ve found!
I love you. Let’s pray.
Psalm 62:5–6 “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.”
“Jesus, you are my only hope. I need you to…”
Psalm 62:7-8 “On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah”
“ Jesus, I trust you to save me.”
