And this reflects our understanding of Grace, that you give in grace, that we are saved by grace that you sustained Us by grace, and therefore, as well. I must go ahead and open for our second session. Literally, father, we thank you for this time you said before us. So we might focus on your word to come up with an understanding of that, which is clearly taught in scripture. We think you that we don't have to fall victim, to eisegesis what we can with the minimum amount of care and effort, understand what your scriptures mean, and what they have to say. We thank you for the teachers who've gone before us would have brought Clarity, pray that we would continue in that fashion Lord, bringing more clarity that people might have a right understanding. During this time again, we pray that we might find ourselves in Fellowship in communion with you. Having confessed, any known sin that we might have that fellowship with the spirit as we focus on Truth which we need to understand your word and we thank you for your faithfulness to us. Afraid on Christ's name. Amen.

Then we are back to our main subject, which is tongues in the Corinthian Church and then we're going to start by taking a look in 1st Corinthians 13:1. Now are you will hear these verses quoted by many people in many different ways and they will try to make them say things that they don't say. The one of those is a subjective, charismatic pemis, Pentecostal perspective that says we don't need to think and we don't need to know things. All we need to do is have loved everyone needs love lie. And we're trying to turn our culture into an understanding, a Biblical truth, but it ain't. So let's make sure we properly understand what's being said here. Starting out then, and 1st Corinthians 13. Verse one, though, I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love. I have become sounding brass For a cleaning symbol.

Interesting. Couple of things to point out the Pentecostals like to say, well, you can't understand those as spoken languages because they are the languages of angels. And you can understand Angels language is the problem we have with that, is that God created angels in mankind all after his image all according to his plan, all part of his creation and they all speak common languages God only communicates to us one way. There is no inkling of thought anywhere in scripture that says the tongue better angels have a babble tongue. That is a thing. Well I'm it means something to someone else. They follow a grammatical linguistic. Speech patterns and when they spoke to us, they didn't Babel and all the places we have Angels communicating with mankind. They are speaking in the languages of the mankind. So we are the every reason to believe I won't make a major emphasis or a study on this. Right here. We have every reason to think and understand that there is no difference between the tongues of men and angels, we speak. The same language is there's no reason to think anything other than that. So don't let this verse be turned into something. That means otherwise. Yes,

They claim. And we probably won't get to that in this study. So I explained it here, they, they claim that they are edified as the spirit and they have a mystical understanding of what it means to have a spirit and to be spiritual, and they are engaged and ecstatic experiences things that come from outside, but suddenly appear in their brains and understanding of Prophecy and idea to come from outside. And they're saying that this is God, the Holy Spirit. And so they are letting their experience being charged, but what they say is it when they have their personal private time and they pray and funds. But even though they can understand that, they are at apply to may have there's a passage and in 1st Corinthians that can be misinterpreted to mean ass. Again, they're looking at the English translation. Slots were they get from it psychologist psychiatrist people who study, Say that there is something that happens. By speaking and babbling but a little bit but you actually produce endorphins just like you do when you suck your thumb. So there is a self-soothing that can happen as a part of it, as part of the psychology that's going on. But our concern is really not about that. We're not using that as leverage. What we're saying is that scripture says something very different about tongue so they have a myriad of different excuses and reasons why they do it a lot of times, because they learned it when someone else pop them and it's been reinforced, and it's a reinforced thinking, and behavior and so forth. So, no different than any other reinforced thought or behavior. That answer your question back there.

Right. Yeah, so prayed in person as an individual, they claim that it is a prayer language that is praying and interceding to God and they're trying to there's a reference in my Romans chapter 8 that talks about the Holy Spirit intercede in for us, it may think that that's what's going on. If they're praying in the spirit, instead of praying in the filling of the Holy Spirit praying, while in Fellowship, then turbotrain in the spirit, as being something Supernatural, having to do with tongues again, they are neglecting the in the spirit with the spirit that is in scripture and they're using an English translation to get their Theology. And so they have absolutely no Foundation to stand on.

Right.

Certainly I would say for those people who are unbelievers, I can be part of the process demon access and possession and allowing whatever is out there to come in can be part of that for those who are believers. I don't think that is the case but we do have. And one of the points to clarify something that I've been repeating throughout, this morning's teaching. And in the prayer time as well, is that worship is always engaging and truth and you cannot be speaking in other languages that you don't understand and the engage in in truth. So it is a antithetic oil form of worship. They want to say it's worship. But in reality, it cannot be worship because worship involves truth. That's why the charismatic occurrences. The tongues ones in particular, cannot have anything to do with worship because they are not based in truth. You aren't thinking things to not thinking language or not reflecting.

What did they say to you?

Make sure you. Will only ensure clear so that others can understand what's the right? So to repeat those people who are listening online, the the question is in First Corinthians 14. Paul says, everything must be in order and if there is a speaking in tongues, there must be an interpreter and that still had to do with speaking in tongues. If it happened had to do with a judgment upon Israel. So was not for any other purpose was not for knowledge, it was not for prophecy, it was to speak judgement towards Israel. The mighty things of God but a gentle language is therefore it is a judgment that Israel in its apostasy is about to be judge, okay? And that stopped happening in 87 will cover that in our text here in a little bit but to the point of doing everything in order. The third wave movement that happened in the 1970s that the charismatic movement of the Calvary Chapel in The Vineyards of stuff They heard that it's part of their Church organization, everything was to be done in order. And so when someone stood up and they had a service that allowed for that, someone stood up and spoke in tongues, there would be the person who's running the meeting would say, okay, or we had someone speaking in tongue and I would have an interpretation and someone else would speak out them. They would just say what they thought was an interpretation who what was being said, something to hit them. And so, I've been in seen many of those services and they have been able to operate everything in order to leave and say, we're not going to do that anymore. We're just going to have one, you know, a person speaking in tongues one interpretation, and that's it. And then we'll have someone who'll stand up the mail, say something, they'll even try to say, oh, well, that's not actually, that's not what that was, anyone else, you know? And so, they who they actually are doing things in order in the methodical way, applying even a form. Doctrine. Even though it's incorrect Doctrine along the way. So you see it. Well behaved, seemingly a manifestation, but they're still missing the point in missing the mark in the mirror when they're not engaging and worship of the Lord. Jesus Christ. Number to, this is a false understanding of tongues that have been brought in improperly to the church and has invaded like an outside infection and it came from culture to the church just like we have with post-modernism. Most people don't even realize the level of post-modernism that is two things can be true at the same time but they have going on in around 9. So let's get back to our text will continue on with the second verse. We're looking at 1st Corinthians 13 verse 8. I know this raises a lot of questions, find the keep them coming, but I want to make some progress in our study to 1st Corinthians 13 verse 8. Love, Never Fails, but whether there are prophecies, they will fail. Whether there are tongues, they will cease whether there is knowledge. It will vanish away. and so, what we have come to is a conclusion Good night, I called this section. The greatest is love the conclusion of verse 13. Going to say faith. Hope and love continue, but the greatest of these is love. But these two statements that we have inverse one, inverse frame this discussion.

Read. Paul is having with the crimp Ian's Love. Never Fails. Love is the greatest of the virtues in the Christian Life. Paul is in going to Sidetrack and talk about these two spiritual gifts that were quite exciting for someone to have the genuine gift of Prophecy or the gift of knowledge, which is a revelatory gift in the early church. That was part of how God was functioning of the apostles were traveling around. Scripture was being written, that was part of the milieu that was there in the early days of the church. That would truly be exciting to have prophecy or words of knowledge. What Paul said, the where are there are prophecies, they will fail. And where there are tongues, they will cease and where there is knowledge, it will vanish away. I like to point out that much of the problem we have in the modern-day Pentecostal and charismatic movement comes from people who are English. Only speakers were reading a text of scripture in the King James version, or otherwise a revised Standard Version and they're coming up with these Solutions based on the English text and they are not even capable of let alone trying to look at what is going on in the Greek. God of the King James version. Writers wanted to really develop a tremendously. Beautiful translation in English. It is, it was then one of the rules than English teachers, play the 80s is don't overuse certain word, don't repeat your words, try to be creative, try to come up with alternative words or not saying the same word over and over again. Use a word in one sentence and use a synonym in the next sentence. Who won God uses the same word in two sentences and you translate them with two different words. In English, you're missing the point of being a translator, I'm out, is what happens here at the Greek word that translates, they will fail and it will vanish away is the same word. It's the same form. Everything in the Greek is the same, but if you don't know the Greek, you'll think you have two different words that are used and they are not in that. Lets you start missing the comparison and contrast that is baked into this as Paul has written me out. So what is the term? We call it stop. It's going to stop. And we have two Greek words, Pop-Tart Jo Jo and then we have power pole p, a u o w, word, Gayo and polyp. So let's see how our translators are doing. Then we know that we have two instances of the one instance of the power with see what happens with. For example Wickliffe John Wick Cliff begins this trend for us with his 1300 translation. So this is written in 1382 to 1395. This was three hundred years before the King James came out.

Do you see the strange spelling? And even I left everything in text so we'll read it. Sure it's followed. It's not down. Where prophecies Human Bean. Voided either languages shouldn't ceases, either science shall be destroyed. So it is just the way that they

Today we say he shall you, shall we? Shall they shall be back. Then we had shoeland. I just mean she'll so prophecies shall be avoided. Languages shall seize and science or knowledge shall be destroyed. So, this is how it was interpreted in 1300. Notice we have voided We have.

Cease and we have destroyed.

No, I didn't misspell if that's the way they spelled it back then. so, we avoided ESC. Career destroyed. But that is how Wickliffe first injected a little bit of confusion into the situation. Why did he do that? Don't know. We can't pull him out of the gray and then ask him John. Why did you use three different words? When two of the words should be the same. Let's take a look at the NIV New International Version, me and I'd be, we have Love Never Fails, but where there are prophecies, they will cease. Where there are tongues, they will be still. And where there is knowledge, it will pass away. So we have the same thing here. We have ceased still didn't pass away. No notice

And pass away are the same word. Why did they use two different translations? Can't tell you? There were just trying to be creative, trying to figure something out, but it also perpetuates a false doctrine that is out there. And some people who are translators are trying to perpetuate that Doctrine, which they believe until they inject it into their translation. And then we have the What is associated with tongues? Is, Will distilled still?

So there is a shift in verbs, invoices, that occurs and 1st Corinthians 13 verse 8, the bow is used,

It's almost as much fun as having an overhead projector. Tell Tori, Gail for those of you who were not around in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, who used to have this device would be right on and then it would flip me and mirrors and lights super jacked it up on the wall. So Katherine Jo is used here and it's used with prophecy and knowledge prophecy and knowledge will be abolished. So that is what we have some property here. Knowledge here. Can you use another color for the prophecy and knowledge? We're both going to be at Target. Okay. Use prophecies will Couture gay marriage will capture Gail. But we find the tongues differently. Will cease tongues will cease that melt word is Powell. PA you oh. So it's a different word prophecy, you know, lights are going to end the same way indicated, by the same word, and in the passive voice, it means They are going to be acted upon something else is going to cause them to stop to be abolished. They're not going to do it themselves. Something else is going to cause them to stop, but is going to cease It's in the middle voice and it indicates that it's just going to sort of died out on its own. It is no longer going to be needed. Paul is going to give the reason in chapter 14 is having to do with announcing judgment on Israel. We've looked at that verse previously, with purpose, of tongues was to announce judgment on Israel. Okay?

Take me to Traverse 2010. 1st Corinthians 14. Verse 22. Tongues are for a sign, not to go to believe but unbelievers. prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for those who believe

So Paul announces that, in verse 14, that the purpose of X is to bring judgment to Israel, defeat of the nation and destruction of the temple in ad70, then after that date the purpose of the gift no longer existed. So the gift would just no longer function. So, let me repeat that. If the purpose of tongues is to Proclaim judgment to a Christ rejecting Nation, the judgment is upon, then, there are in the fifth cycle of discipline. They're about to be carried away as a nation once that occurs or is no longer the reason for the tongues to be expressed in Jerusalem or in those companies that have Jewish Believers with them, okay?

So, here is 1st Corinthians 13. Verse 8, already mapped out. Love. Never fails. Wherever there are prophecies. They will fail. We have our cap targia right here, which means to be a balla scht. So prophecies are going to be abolished knowledge.

So at 8070 at that point, there's no longer any reason for tongues to exist. So many people go down the road of trying to say, there is a more perfect that comes along. And they try to say that it's the word of God and they're missing the point. The point here is that tongues have a purpose and a reason once that purpose is gone then tongues will see. So that is the case. Come on, we need to examine a couple of terms and Concepts. First, look at Perfect.

With the term perfect, which is totally off. We have to understand what perfect means and 1st Corinthians 13 verse 10. 1st Corinthians 13 verse 10. The first To help us prepare for Tilly off. Switch is maturity or fullness or completeness. Let's talk about now versus then. We have to understand, there is a temporal shift that goes on in this passage in 1st Corinthians that exists between the words now and the words, then malvis than that, then we have to realize that there are two different illustrations used in verses 11. And 12 know what these verses are going to illustrate is the abolishing of knowledge and the abolishing a prophecy. So we understand that Tom's is going to cease, but why is knowledge and prophecy going to be done away. With what we have in verse a is a focus on Prophecy what we've been looking at which will be abolished and knowledge which will be abolished. The focus of this chapter is not on tongues because they are just going to die out but knowledge and prophecy are going To be a bow license. So, that is being talked about. He doesn't mention tongues again, but he mentions cat card game, several times prophecy, an old age again, in relation to them, they are going to be abolished. What is me. Knowledge is going to be abolished while we're not talking about knowledge. The kind of proof that you have in your mind. You're thinking, it's not knowing that's being abolished. It is a spiritual gift, made available to the early church, but is the cousin of Prophecy. But has to do with God giving situational awareness to Believers at that time. So he can keep the church, in fact, protected, and pool. So it keeps them from getting slaughtered number one or words of wisdom that allow them to prevent certain situations and to be informed and it will be reply. A square in the word of God does come into full. Being when we have the Canon of scripture who starred in verse 9, 1st Corinthians 39 says, for we know in part and we prophesy in part

Knowledge. Only was partial. Prophecy was partial who win the real deal comes. The partial will be cat card game or the ball is going through this because there's something in the text, there is a part of vocabulary here that leads us to understand this knowledge. Doesn't it isn't any knowledge that fool dog has a completed noise but it's a partial knowledge. It's only a portion of knowledge that is made available in the same with prophecy. Continuing inverse 10. But then that which is perfect has come The map, which is, in part will be done away. See that word part? Well, I'm sure that's what I'm talking about. The knowledge and the prophecy only give a part of the picture. Really good part of what's going on. Lowe's, the kid used to have a babysitter who would come up and babysitters? In fact. I used to go to this church. Teenage girls were a bit older than me and they lived up.

Okay. Anyways, teenage, you know, Christian babysitters name would come to the house. And this one of them, my name is Lori. Actually, she would come. And she always brought this little stencil piece of paper and you look at it and it's blank and when you get out of pencil on, she would have me just kind of race over into start to see something. Over something underneath it and play. Can you trace a little bit more as a pencil? And there's more that would be revealed that she had these really cool, amazing little drawings and she traced over them, they would be revealed what happens with knowledge. And with prophecy is they can only Trace over a portion Of the picture. The whole picture is not revealed with knowledge and prophecy is what our passage is telling us so knowledge doesn't get it. Done in Prophecy, doesn't get it done, it's there for a purpose but it is not equal to that which is taught that which is to come, which is perfect or so, we are. Okay. So that's why I brought up that word previous lead to this. but when that which is perfect is come and that which is in part will be in the hot will be done away with So perfect in this context and this is part of the key to being able to properly, understand this passage perfect is not speaking of qualitative. But on the quantitative form. So when it's partial it isn't a qualitative idea, it's a quantitative idea. Only half on the only a quarter only 10% is made available. That's the idea from the Greek language that we have here. It's not qualitative, it's not saying that it's a partial and quality itsines, partial in quantity. So this is not a reference to a qualitative stage in God's plan will. Why does that even matter? Because we have people who are saying that this is something that we need, but they're trying to turn it into a qualitative, something and where they take this and twist as they try to say, we have any more qualitative way to go. If you follow these Pentecostal things, if you speak in tongues, if you have the words of knowledge, the words of wisdom, the words of Prophecy may say a venue are getting qualitative information. Lesser lesser quality than scripture, yes, but still quality, and that's not what scripture say. So what it's saying here, it's saying it's a qualitative, you're only seeing a small percentage of the data a percentage of the info, okay?

So this has been a problem down through the two thousand years of the church age. The people look for something experiential to prove that they are somehow more spiritual than other people.

I speak in tongues. Well, I have words of wisdom, by of words of knowledge. Know what you'll find for example. And I'm, as I'm looking through the dictionary of the history of Pentecostal and charismatic movement that has all the history of all the occurrences were people through 2,000 years. Spoke in tongues, they said or good prophecies they said or heard words of knowledge or had words of wisdom. The problem is they always try to use it as a I'm better than you. I have Knowledge from God than anyone else has. So they use it to become cult leaders to mislead people from understanding the purity of Doctrine, or whatever else may be on their agenda. But one other major way it is, I will state at this way. It's the principle it is pure and simple arrogance. Pure and simple area to the people who are rejecting the truth of God's word, replacing it with their Viewpoint. They're thinking, so it is not a spiritual gift. It is not speaking in tongues. It is not any of these other things, the spiritual life has to do with our walk with the Lord, and people get distracted and savings World by putting emphasis on the wrong thing. And so what we have happening in the charismatic movement is a major distraction from the truth of God's word and an understanding of our proper Grace orientation or Grace relationship that we were in power. We are equipped mermaid able to live the supernatural spiritual life for the work that he has done. But our job is to understand that this study at the see what has been given to us to understand what the 40. So things are there were dropped on us at the moment of our Salvation. God gave us blessings and gifts and we do not utilize them until we are aware of them. We need to learn. We need to grow its part of maturity kids. Don't know how to do things when they play. What are they doing? They're acting like they know how to do things they pretend like they know how to do things but they don't they're trying to be more than they are and we can't do that in the Christian Life. We can't pretend To know that you are royalty in Christ. Jesus. Yet to be taught it. You have to learn it. You have to understand what that means. You have to understand the significance of that. How does that change your relationship with God? How does that give you access in prayer? What does that mean with how we treat each other or we royal family of God is everyone royalty in Christ? Jesus? Good grief. Then we should all treat each other differently than we do.

So, moving forward, then.

Child speaking or understanding is one of the oldest tration. We have child speaking or understanding like a child You see that in 1st Corinthians, 13 verse 11. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But when I became a man, I put away childish things What does that mean? Is that talking about fantasy understanding? Let me ask you this when it comes to knowing as a child, what do children know?

Play no initially what? They can see. Children are circumstantial thinkers. You see God is created by human beings. Such that the baby and it's early. Infant life has an ability to focus on Mom. It has a focal depth, that means that when you hold it, his eyes are able to see, whatever it is a 12-14 in. And it takes to get between eyes mouth on. Breast is looking at mom that focal distance and there is a connection to reality. You're there. I can taste you, I can touch you. I can hold you. I feel you and I can see you. I can see your eyes. There is a connection. There it is. Circumstantial. As the child grows older and it's not held as much and you put the child down to sleep and then nap, you go in the other room, the baby wakes up. What is it? Do it cries, why? Because it has a circumstantial thinking going on, where is mom? There's no Mom. I don't see your I don't taste or I don't touch her cry. Mom comes running and dad comes running and says moms around the corner. I can't do anything for you but I can hold you and down. Chill until mom gets there or if you're on formula and dad can pretend like his mom and then the kids messed up for life.

Sorry. I know, there's special circumstances. I just have to appreciate my sense of humor.

What do children know? It's circumstantial and it continues that way, I mean, you'll see the kids hiding behind the skirts of mom. You know, they're involved in public with you, exceptions are all the kids that have no fear and they will go anywhere. But then there's those who want to be connected in the air or know where Mom and Dad are. I was thinking a kid, I need to be connected in here and nowhere, mom and dad or but they didn't have to know where I was. I was but I was up in the tree looking down on them and my little lie-down unload, your lane we had this tree, I called the money tree had great big leaves and I thought it was just like money. And so I would pick the leaves and I'm going, I would pay people and and relatives, and people who came to visit with Mom and Dad and I would pay them up. I don't know what I was flying butt. But, you know, they would come looking for me were Steve. And where's David? He stopped. I felt fine and then we move on. We have that progression. So we actually have a level of autonomy that's developed, an ability to think on your own to establish a maturity with right-thinking, right processes. And right, understanding that comes out as part of what is happening. One of the last phase is that I think is quite humorous actually is the independence phase where the person was learning to be autonomous, typically as a late teen sometimes, even into the early twenties, it would seem and you always see this pushing away from the parents that, you know, don't tell me what to do and I know there's just an attention, it's going on. The funny thing about it is in reality, it's the kids who can't let go of the parents. But they're treating the tension as if it's about the parents. When really, it's about them because once threw a piece once they understand there at 1, I'm suddenly there is no friction. There is no conflict there, able to comply and meet, you know, whatever requirements are are with living in Mom and Dad's house. But at the same time and Hurst and they have a complete Freedom, it's the lack of awareness of your freedom in your autonomy with. Keeps you in that place is so to that part of the group that comes from and Christian doctrine and knowledge, we come to a place where he we haven't autonomy. We're able to think doctor in, on our own. The Mac gives us Liberty. Liberty from religious liberty from spiritual bullying, Liberty from spiritual, intrusion, from foxit, Christianity from things like charismatic, Pentecostal people pushing their ideas or ideologies on you. There is a maturity that comes the funny thing, is some people. Hopefully a very small percentage, but there are those who never come to that point of emotional maturity on their own in a relationship with her family. And so it's very difficult for them to come to that on their own in the relationship with God and spiritual, truth is just part of the progression. You should be growing in these ways, as a child, becoming an adult becoming independent autonomous. So too should be happening in biblical thinking as well. So, we have this reference when I was a child, I spoke as a child that is with limited mode. Circumstantial knowledge. Only that which I was immediately aware of or have been inculcated with, I understood as a child. Same thing I thought as a child, that same thing and no difference who, when I became a man, I put away childish things, the circumstantial is gone. The limitation in perspective is is gone and then we have the word mirror or a nigma which occurs in our next first first Corinthians 13:12. So that was verse 11, the child speech. And then we have the mirror or the Enigma for now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now, I know in part, but then I shall know. Just as, I also am dumb. If you look up on the screen, you'll see the dimly here is actually are Greek word. I need mama. I need money to seewee transliterated. I need money from the Greek. It just came straight across with almost no spelling difference and it needs an ignorant. Which is something that is difficult to see something that has been, was what it means. It's unknowable. It's damn, it's not perceivable. So we see in a mirror as do them. Now, keep in mind that the mirrors they had then we're basically brass or bronze and was polished and so it always had a little bit of a well, as soon as different color. So that's not reflecting perfectly. There is going to be a reflective change happens. And as it oxidizes, it's going to change the color in the reflectivity even more. She has to keep your mirror polish and hopefully then you'll get a better idea of what it is that you're looking at James.
