Breaking The Cycle of Shame
Notes

Shame Is The All-Consuming Emotional Condition
That We've Let Down Ourselves, Others, And God.
GUILT = I MADE A MISTAKE
SHAME = I AM A MISTAKE
The enemy loves shame. But God chooses to forgive and forget.
HEALTHY CONFIDENCE IN WHO GOD IS AND WHAT HE CAN DO
FAVORITE SONG FROM ELEVATION CONCERT… RATTLE
INTRO SAUL
He was a guy that had so much going for him but he lived in shame…
Today tell you the opposite of what you should do
TALK DOWN ON YOURSELF
Samuel
God’s man. A judge and a prophet. He anointed SAUL as king over Israel.
God didn’t want them to have a king… but they begged for one.
God tells Samuel that SAUL was the king for them.
Saul was 6’5”. Handsome. A Hallmark movie man.
11 When those who knew Saul heard about it, they exclaimed, “What? Is even Saul a prophet? How did the son of Kish become a prophet?”
Humble vs. Negative
SAUL talks negative about himself.
WHAT IS PEOPLE COULD HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS… WHAT WOULD THEY THINK?
How do you talk about yourself?
WE OFTEN SAY GOD’S NO FOR HIM
Who am I that God would use me?
THE ONLY THING THAT CAN KEEP GOD FROM WORKING IN YOUR LIFE IS YOUR LACK OF FAITH.
I’ll never find THE ONE. So I never go on a date.
I’ll never beat this addiction. So I never put the precautions in place.
SMALL GROUPS
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
OTHERS can help us see what God says about us.
22 So they asked the Lord, “Where is he?” And the Lord replied, “He is hiding among the baggage.”
Leaders hear everything but they only listen to the right people THE RIGHT THEY.
Tough. Honest. Encouraging. Yeilded.
BRAG ON YOURSELF
3 Soon after this, Jonathan attacked and defeated the garrison of Philistines at Geba. The news spread quickly among the Philistines. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying, “Hebrews, hear this! Rise up in revolt!”
4 All Israel heard the news that Saul had destroyed the Philistine garrison at Geba and that the Philistines now hated the Israelites more than ever. So the entire Israelite army was summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.
NO LONGER IS IT WHAT GOD DID IN MY LIFE. IT’S WHAT I DID.
It wasn’t even Saul… It was his son Jonathan that did it.
WE START TO LOOK AT OUR LIVES AND TAKE CREDIT FOR IT ALL FORGETTING THAT GOD MADE A WAY.
SOMETIMES I HATE INSTAGRAM
It’s 90% bragging on people themselves...
OLD PICTURES OF ME… FAMILY SAYING THEY SEE THEM SOMETIMES… REMINDER OF HOW FAR I’VE COME BECAUSE OF GOD
FOLLOW YOUR HEART
11 “What have you done?” asked Samuel. Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash,
12 I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
I SAW. I THOUGHT. I FELT.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WHAT GOD CALLS YOU TO DO IS DIFFERENT THAN WHAT YOU FEEL?
WHAT WOULD YOUR LIFE LOOK LIKE IF YOU FOLLOWED GOD INSTEAD OF YOURSELF?
CRITICIZE OTHERS
9 So from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.
SAUL chased and worried about DAVID so much that he never did what God needed him to do.
CRITICISM IS OFTEN JEALOUSLY IN DISGUISE
When we get so focused on tearing down others success we never really do what we need to do to have our own success.
WELL… IF I HAD WHAT THEY HAD… OF COURSE THAT WOULD HAPPEN…
GOD HAS GIVEN YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO DO EXACTLY WHAT HE’S CALLED YOU TO DO
WE ARE TOO BUSY TRYING TO BE EVERYBODY ELSE BUT WHO GOD HAS CALLED US TO BE.
11 Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.
INSTEAD OF...

2. BRAG ON YOURSELF
BECOME MORE SELF AWARE
3. FOLLOW YOUR HEART
OBEY GOD WHETHER YOU FEEL IT OR NOT
4. CRITICIZE THE SUCCESS OF OTHERS
CELEBRATE THE SUCCESS OF OTHERS
