Introduction
Living in Southern Californian, we are so familiar with having years of drought and then drowning in the rain in one winter. We need rain to fill our empty reservoirs, gives life to animals and plants, making everything green. The streams make new paths of life in the wilderness, move boulders, and destroys God knows whatever needs destruction is in its path, and unfortunately, sometimes some of our homes. But in the end, it accomplishes the purpose for what it was sent for in creation. In our first reading, the Prophet Isaiah says such is the Word of God, a force in nature, achieving the end for which it was sent.
Body
In our Gospel, Jesus gives the parable of the Sower, and in the longer version of this Gospel, the disciples tell him why are you talking in parables; nobody understands. And Jesus says that because the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled that said these people see with their eyes and hear with their ears and still don’t understand. Jesus is talking to them in parables because up to this point in the Gospel of Matthew Jesus spoke in plain Aramaic and did signs to show them, he was their Messiah and the Kingdom was at hand but the Jewish religious authorities and some of the people kept rejecting him. So, the end for which the Word was sent for them was achieved.
In Marks’s Gospel Jesus tells the disciples the importance of understanding the Parable of the Sower, because it is the key to understanding all other parables and the Kingdom of God because it is about how the word of God is received, understood, nurtured, and used in our lives. He says; A Sower went out to sow seed; some fell on the Path, and the birds ate it up; some fell on rocky ground and scorched by the sun; some fell on thorns and were choked, and some fell on rich soil and produced fruit. Then he said, “Whoever has ears ought to hear”
My brother and sisters, let me suggest the who in the whomever today is you and me. By virtue of our Baptisms, our ears were opened to hear the word of God, and our mouths were opened to speak the word of God. We all are called to be rich soil in the way we receive, understand, nurture, and do the Word of God in our lives. Inspired by the power of the Holy Spirit in the sacramental life, the Church, we are called to bear the fruit of the Spirit, Charity, Joy, Peace, Mercy, and more.
Conclusion
The apostle Paul in our second reading, says, “Creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God” There are People of God out there eagerly waiting for us to take the fruits of the Word of God to the Market, to reveal the name of Christ his goodness love, peace, joy, and mercy. So they too may see the goodness of the word of God and The Eucharist and come to Christ, believe in him, and have a life. Some will accept him eagerly, and yet some will reject him. But in either case, the Word of God will achieve the end for which it was sent for them and for us.
