Un-Plugged: Bringing More Than a Song
(A 2023 summer series targeting the heart of God—from mine to His)
WELCOME...
The Cornerstone Family is excited that you have taken time to attend our weekend service!
Welcome to this campus or if by Facebook, thanks for capturing our LIVE Stream today.
Cornerstone exists to “Bring Hope to Find and Follow Jesus.”
Thus, you will see us use a hashtag that says #hopeishere.
We believe that together—we can live stronger lives and change the World we live in through Jesus.
Thank you again for joining us today.
TODAY WE COME TO CELEBRATE GOD AND HIS WORD: WITH A FOCUS ON ROMANS
WE HAVE ASKED THE QUESTION
What if, what if, what if…
We stripped away cool music?
Flat screens removed?
Comfortable seating removed?
Would God still be enough for His people to come together?
What creates hunger for God?
-Would you agree that Minimizing God’s attributes also minimizes the Gospel?
Or Vise Versa?
Head Change:
To know that righteousness—right standing with God—comes through faith in the gospel.
NOT WORKS!
Head Change:
To know that suppressing the truth leads to ungodliness and unrighteousness.
Why?
Because when we suppress the truth… BEACH BALL EFFECT…suppress the truth of God through disobedience, distortion, and denial, God delivers us over to corrupt living.
Romans 1:26 a (NLT)
26 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires.
29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.
THIS WEEK WE ASK?
Is religion the answer to our ungodliness in our corrupt living?
SONG
More than a song / O Come Let Us Adore HIM
FLOW HOLY SPIRIT
INTRO
A poll of non-Christians in America revealed that 84% knew at least one christian personally, yet only 15% said, “that the believers lifestyle was significantly different than their own.”
Head Change: To know that only God’s transforming grace can create righteous hearts that love obedience.
BECAUSE....
Religious obedience divorced from the gospel leads to a heart at odds with the righteousness of God, NOT a changed heart.
It promises to bring about a right standing with God, but stops short as it enslaves and brings about religious bondage.
In chapter one we found that...
All of humanity are unified in this common problem – – that we have rejected God’s authority and despise his glory.
In Chapter two...
Paul will confront even religion head on, even the Jewish religion
Laws cannot change our hearts only our behavior
1 You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things.
Charles Spurgeon story of the Great Carrot farmer
300 acers
nobleman brought the king a great noble horse
carrot farmer gave me a carrot
you are giving the horse for yourself
In Rom. 2:12-24
It’s not that we don’t know the law, we don’t obey the part that we know
even the gentiles have a Law.
Religion brings about many negative attributes such as being proud, hypocritical, and judgmental.
3 Negative Attributes of Religion
Critical Spirit
Hypocrisy
Insecurity
3 Negative Attributes of Religion
(without the Gospel)
Critical Spirit
better than others
Hypocrisy
hide our false to keep an outward appearance
sinful passions
Insecurity
insecure of being accepted by God
Have I done enough
All this Leads to despair and every evil work.
The Law is like railroad tracks
The tracks point to the way you should go...
but cannot move the freight down the track
Similar...
The law shows you which way to go and what to do, but it is powerless to move you to a heart change that brings righteousness.
New Kind of obedience
you seek righteousness, cause you crave righteousness, not good behavior
you pursue God because you love God, not because you are commanded too.
you desire acceptance, love, and forgiveness that only comes through a New kind of circumcision. Circumcision of the Heart!
28 For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. 29 No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people.
No ritual can change the Heart
we must have inward transforming grace!
given only by the Power of the Gospel has that Power.
16 For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.
How are you trying to change your heart?
Are you worn out?
Matthew 11:20–30 MSG
28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
ALTER CALL
NEXT WEEK Chapter 3
21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago.
AMEN
Generosity and updates
Offering:
Why do we give? Duty? Religion? Obedience?
3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
