Introduction
Life could be described as the pursuit of happiness, the search for satisfaction.
Jim Carey- I wish everyone could have everything they ever wanted so they could see its not the answer.
Jesus claimed that he was the one who could satisfy our deepest longings.
He said “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
What did Jesus mean by this?
I. Jesus gives eternal life
I. Jesus gives eternal life
I am the bread of life- live giving bread.
He is using a metaphor. Jesus just fed them. They were following him because they wanted more.
Jesus encouraged them so seek something greater than physical food. Eternal life.
Eternal life is to know God and to live forever with him.
Jesus is claiming that he is the one who gives people this eternal life.
In order to understand this you need the big picture of the Bible’s message.
We were made to know God- Sin made us far from God and brought death- Jesus came in to the world to rescue us and bring us back to God- Jesus lived a perfect life- died for our sins- rose from the dead. He did this so our sin can be forgiven and taken away so we can know God. Eternal life.
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
II. Those who believe in him are full
II. Those who believe in him are full
Coming and believing are the same thing- To believe isn’t to believe he existed, but it is to depend upon him to give you eternal life. It is to trust in him to forgive your sin and bring you to God.
What happens to those who do this?
They never hunger or thirst. Just as the bread isn’t literal so neither are the hunger or thirst.
Jesus is using everyday examples to teach profound spiritual truths.
He is saying you will never feel empty spiritually. You will be full. You will know God, you will have a relationship with him in this life and be with him forever in the next.
The one who knows God is satisfied.
Conclusion
Conclusion
As I finish I just want us to think about our response to what Jesus said.
At the time when Jesus said these word there were two responses-
John 6:66 “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.”
or
John 6:67-69 “Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.””
