but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

IN ORDER FOR US TO CANCEL THE NOISE, WE NEED TO RETREAT
3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.
ACCORDING TO THE MOSAIC LAW, BOTH PARTIES WERE TO BE STONED.
This gives us a theory that has been discussed by scholars.
There were spies that witnessed the account.
There was not much known about this woman. But some scholars believe that she was the victim of a spiteful vendetta against her.
PEOPLE WHO FAIL IN THEIR OWN LIFE ALWAYS POINT OUT THE SIN OF OTHERS
4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
THIS WOMAN WAS BROUGHT TO JESUS IN A WAY THAT WOULD BOTH EMBARRASS AND HUMILIATE HER. SHE WAS BROUGHT TO JESUS VULNERABLE, SCARED AND AS A PRISONER AGAINST HER WILL.
MOST OF US WHEN WE HAVE TO STAND BEFORE JESUS FEEL THE SAME WAY. WE FEEL LIKE THIS IS IT. WE ARE DONE GAME OVER.
THE MORE WE LOOK TO OTHERS, THE LESS WE LOOK AT OURSELVES.
THIS IS A VERY CRUCIAL MOMENT FOR JESUS. CONDONING THIS WOMAN’S SIN MEANS THAT HE BREAKS THE MOSIAC LAW AND THE ROMAN LAW. CONDEMNING HER MEANS THAT THIS WOMAN LOSES HER LIFE.
6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.
THIS IS A LIFE AND DEATH SITUATION AND JESUS IS PLAYING IN THE DIRT? DOES HE EVEN CARE ABOUT THIS WOMAN? DOES HE NOT HAVE ANY COMPASSION WITHIN HIM?
7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
ITS HARD TO CONDEMN OTHERS OF THEIR SINS WHEN WE ARE CONFRONTED WITH OUR OWN
We have a habit of the comparison of others. We say things like “well our sin isn’t THAT bad”, or that “Jesus will forgive that”. What we forget is that Jesus forgives, but he also judges.
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
Some of you are quick to point the finger at others, but are slow to acknowledge your own shortcomings.
At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
I think it’s really interesting that the eldest were the ones to flee first. Why? Some scholars believe they felt the most guilty.
KNOWLEDGE DOESN’T SAVE YOU, JESUS DOES
Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
Can you imagine how this woman feels right now? How scared and broken she must feel? To have the Son of Man right in front of her and waiting for the judgement that she was going to get? What is going through her mind right now?
Jesus, being a sinless man could have literally exacted justice on her. He could have done what was required by law to be done. He could have exacted justice and been righteous in it.
And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
Listen to the response. Jesus is full of both truth and grace. Not defining her by her sin, yet not dismissing it. Telling her to go and sin no more addresses both the worry she had of being stoned and the issue of sin in her life.
For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.
For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.
JESUS’ LIGHT EXPOSES THE DARKNESS
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
