V. 3
Jesus by His divine power has granted us everything necessary to live a godly life.
This granting comes by the knowledge of Him who calls us.
A godly life begins when we understand Christ and see Him for who He truly is.
What’s strange for us to wrap our mind around this is that this understanding originates from outside of us.
Jesus calls us to Himself, granting us the knowledge and faith we need to have in Him.
Furthermore, it is to His own glory and excellence that Jesus call us to.
You and I aren’t called to Jesus because of our worth, or how amazing we are.
Instead Jesus us calls us to Himself according to His worthiness to be praises and on the basis of what He has done, and through knowing who He is and what He has done, Jesus grants us everything we need to live a godly life.
Knowing and understanding Jesus leads to salvation and a godly life.
V. 4
By His excellency and through His calling, Christ grants us great and precious promises.
Promises of redemption, regeneration, a new heart, and security of salvation
Through receiving these promises two things happen.
We become partakers of the divine nature.
Not superhero, but instead a new creation, and
God gives me a new nature, one that tends toward faithfulness.
We escape the corruption that is in the world due to sinful desire.
God’s Promises given to us through Jesus make us a new creation, no longer bound to desire and corruption, but instead able to live and glorify God.
V. 5-8
For this reason, supplement your faith with these things:
Virtue= moral excellence
Knowledge= Knowledge of God that is used to examine ourselves and worship Him
Self- Control= Continue to fight desire and compulsion
Godliness= reverence and respect to God
Brotherly Affection= love for one another
Love= Act lovingly to one another and to others
Discussion Questions:
Look at verses 8-9, why does Peter say these qualities are good to pursue? How does he describe the people who don’t display these qualities?
Which of these virtues do you struggle with the most? How can you grow in this area?
