The Sabbath - a Delight
Road map
Going to Jesus in Mark 2.23-28
Announcing the Main Point, restating the main point, elaborating on the main point.
Mark 2.27 “And Jesus was saying to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.”
Giving a road map - going from the beginning of time all the way to the end of time
Prayer - thankful praise, delight, request faith
From there Lord, I seek to go to the Law - describing that this is mandatory, enhancing that argument with the following
Exodus 20.8-11 ““Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of Yahweh your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female slave or your cattle or your sojourner who is within your gates. “For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.”
to the beginning of time and the institution of Sabbath - making sure that I communicate that I understand the confusion associated with the day.
Genesis 2.2-3 “And on the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His work which God had created in making it.”
Then I will turn us toward our main text that tells us how to enjoy the gift of Sabbath.
Isaiah 58.13-14 ““If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own desire on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of Yahweh honorable, And honor it, by not doing your own ways, By not finding your own desire And speaking your own word, Then you will take delight in Yahweh, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the inheritance of Jacob your father, For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.”” - Lingering on the delight aspect of yanag that it is by virtue of the Hitpael and intensive and reflexive delight that helps us even understand Psalm 37.4 “Delight yourself in Yahweh; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”
So who supports keeping the Sabbath?
Paul does, Romans 7.12 “So, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.”
Isaiah does - Gentiles who keep the Sabbath and love Yahweh He brings near to Himself Is 56.6-7 ““Also the foreigners who join themselves to Yahweh, To minister to Him, and to love the name of Yahweh, To be His slaves, every one who keeps from profaning the sabbath And takes hold of My covenant, Even those I will bring to My holy mountain And make them glad in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar; For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.””
Nehemiah told the Levites the ones who were in charge of worship to keep the Sabbath Nehemiah 13.22 “And I said to the Levites that they should cleanse themselves and come as gatekeepers to keep the sabbath day holy. For this also remember me, O my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness.”
and passages showing who does not support the Sabbath.
Cheats and liars dont Amos 8.5 “saying, “When will the new moon pass over, So that we may sell grain, And the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, To make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with a deceptive balance,”
Those who elevate tradition over the doctrines of God and over peoples needs Luke 13.10-17 “And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman who for eighteen years had a sickness caused by a spirit, and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. But when Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made erect again and began glorifying God. But the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, answered and was saying to the crowd, “There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath release his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? “And this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for—behold—eighteen years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” And as He said this, all His oppone…”
Address counter arguments
Legalistic (Romans 7.12 “So, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” Isaiah 42.21 “Yahweh was pleased for His righteousness’ sake That He make the law great and majestic.”
Salvation by works (Titus 3.5 “He saved us, not by works which we did in righteousness, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,” , Romans 3.20 “because by the works of the Law NO FLESH WILL BE JUSTIFIED IN HIS SIGHT, for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.”
I will talk about the heart - showing Numbers 15:32-41. Yahweh desire our whole heart.
Matthew 5.22 ““But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be guilty before the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.”
Matthew 5.28 “but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
Then I will talk about what a godly Sabbath looks like CURFEW
Communion - 1 Corinthians 11 - keep the slate clean and reconcile with others
Use your spiritual gifts in serving others - John 13.15 ““For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.”
Rest and Recreate - get into God’s creation and enjoy it. Take a nap and hold still Psalm 46.10 ““Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.””
Fast from the World James 1.27 “Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” Turn off social media, the news, turn off sports - this is God’s day
Eat - The Sabbath is for rejoicing so eat good food that you prepared beforehand
Worship - Isaiah 66.22-23 ““For just as the new heavens and the new earth Which I make will endure before Me,” declares Yahweh, “So your seed and your name will endure. “And it shall be from new moon to new moon And from sabbath to sabbath, All mankind will come to worship before Me,” says Yahweh.”
Then I will use Isaiah 66.22-23 to show that the Sabbath endures to the end of all eternity - this is a type
then take us to Hebrews 3 and 4.
Conclude with what will keep you from keeping the Sabbath, (i.e. idols) repentance needed if disobedience has taken place
INTRODUCTION:
Analogy - Preparing for the Messiah
What would life be like if you knew that the Lord was returning this week - Say on Tuesday. Take a pen if you would and write down three things that you would do as soon as you left. Its okay, write down a few things that you would do.
What is the Sabbath, why is it important
The Sabbath, שַׁבָּת means to rest, it is a creation level ordinance designated by God as a delight
Genesis 2.2-3 “And on the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His work which God had created in making it.”
Numbers 15:32–41 | 32 Now the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, and they found a man gathering wood on the sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering wood brought him near to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation; 34 and they put him in custody because it had not been declared what should be done to him. 35 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 So all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. 37 Yahweh also spoke to Moses, saying, 38 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. 39 “And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of Yahweh, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, 40 so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God. 41 “I am Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Yahweh your God.”
Matthew 5:21–22 ““You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT MURDER’ and ‘Whoever murders shall be guilty before the court.’ “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be guilty before the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.”
Matthew 5.28 “but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
What does the Sabbath do?
Helps us to remember the Lord’s coming return
Helps us to worship Him with our brothers and sisters
Why is the Sabbath a burden? Amos 8.5 “saying, “When will the new moon pass over, So that we may sell grain, And the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, To make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with a deceptive balance,”
MAINPOINT:
Mark 2:27 | 27 And Jesus was saying to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
Hebrews 4.9 “So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.”
SERMON: Complete Conditional Statement
Isaiah 58:13 13 “If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own desire on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of Yahweh honorable, And honor it, by not doing your own ways, By not finding your own desire And speaking your own word,
Restatement
If because you desire to honor the sabbath of Yahweh, you stop honoring yourself on God’s holy day, delighting in it, honoring it by refusing to make yourself god, by ceasing to look for what you want and speaking what you want...
If you cause yourself to turn - with an intentional act forcing yourself from defiling holy ground with your foot (K&D)
LXX has “turn your foot away from the Sabbath” and “speak a word in anger from your mouth”
Protasis statement
13.1 “If…you turn” אִם שׁוב šwb turn back, return verb, Hifʿîl (Expresses a causative type of action with an active voice - instead of ‘he heard’ rendered ‘he caused to hear’), yiqtōl (imperfect), second person, masculine, singular, active Sense: to turn – to change orientation or direction, also in the abstract sense.
Also אִם שׁוב has the understanding of repentance
Should it rather be “if you cause to turn”
13.2 “from doing” עֲשׂ֥וֹת ʿǎśôṯʹ עשׂה ʿśh make, manufacture; do verb, Qal(), construct, infinitive, active, infinitive construct Sense: to do (act) – to carry out or perform an action or course of action.

13.4 “honorable” מְכֻבָּ֔ד meḵǔb·bāḏʹ כבד kbd weigh heavily upon; be heavy, dull; be weighty, be honored verb, Puʿʿal (Passive counterpart of the Piel - it expresses an intensive action with a passive voice. Instead of ‘he shattered’ render ‘it was shattered’), masculine, singular, absolute, passive participle, passive, pure noun participle Sense: to be respected – to be shown respect or esteem.
Extremely honorable the holy day of Yahweh
*13E “and honor it” וְכִבַּדְתּוֹ֙ weḵib·bǎḏ·tôʹ וְכבד kbd weigh heavily upon; be heavy, dull; be weighty, be honored verb, Piʿʿēl (Expresses an intensive type of action - ‘broke’ becomes ‘shattered’ matches Factitive), second person, masculine, singular, wᵊqātal (waw + perfect), perfect, active, suffixed (perfect) sequential Sense: to honor – to bestow honor or rewards upon.
Seems like with the Piel intensifying the verb it means to really honor it truly
*13F “desisting from” מֵעֲשׂ֣וֹת mē·ʿǎśôṯʹ מִןעשׂה ʿśh make, manufacture; do verb, Qal (), construct, infinitive, active, infinitive construct Sense: to do (manner) – to behave in a certain manner; show a certain behavior or attribute; conduct or comport oneself.

Interesting how the audience is speaking but in verse 14 Yahweh “has spoken”
Isaiah 58:14 Then you will take delight in Yahweh, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the inheritance of Jacob your father (PS105.10-11), For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.”
Restatement:
You will pamper and refresh yourself by doing what you were designed to do - delight in Yahweh. He will cause you to enjoy the very best and join you with the people of God. He is totally committed to this and has confirmed it through His revealed Word.
*14A “you will take delight” תִּתְעַנַּג֙ tiṯ·ʿǎn·nǎḡʹ ענג ʿng pamper or refresh oneself; take one’s pleasure in; make fun about; weak verb, Hiṯpaʿʿēl (Expresses an intensive type of action with a reflexive voice - ‘he was holy’ becomes ‘he sanctified himself’), yiqtōl (imperfect), second person, masculine, singular, middle Sense: to delight (take) – to take a high degree of pleasure or mental satisfaction in.
This will ultimately return extreme delight to yourself(?)
*14B “And I will make you ride” וְהִרְכַּבְתִּ֖יךָ wehir·kǎḇ·tîʹ·ḵā וְרכב rkb ride; mount, climb verb, Hifʿîl (Expresses a causative type of action with an active voice - instead of ‘he heard’ rendered ‘he caused to hear’), first person, singular, wᵊqātal (waw + perfect), perfect, active, suffixed (perfect) sequential, common Sense: to cause to ride – to cause or give permission for someone to ride something.

Should it rather be rendered - I will cause you to eat

Romans 7.12 “So, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.”
Isaiah 42.21 “Yahweh was pleased for His righteousness’ sake That He make the law great and majestic.”
There is no sound reason why I should become an adulterer, or covet or blaspheme. Just because this culture doesnt honor the Sabbath does not mean that I dont have to either
Counter argument - “You are saying if I keep the sabbath I will be saved”
Titus 3.5 “He saved us, not by works which we did in righteousness, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,”

Isaiah 56.6-7 ““Also the foreigners who join themselves to Yahweh, To minister to Him, and to love the name of Yahweh, To be His slaves, every one who keeps from profaning the sabbath And takes hold of My covenant, Even those I will bring to My holy mountain And make them glad in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar; For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.””

Who doesnt support keeping the Sabbath?
Hypocrites Luke 13.10-14 “And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. But the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, answered and was saying to the crowd, “There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.””
Luke 13.14-17 “But the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, answered and was saying to the crowd, “There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath release his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? “And this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for—behold—eighteen years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” And as He said this, all His opponents were being put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.”
Merchants that see the Sabbath as an unfortunate pause whereby they cannot cheat Amos 8.5 “saying, “When will the new moon pass over, So that we may sell grain, And the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, To make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with a deceptive balance,”

CONCLUSION:
Context is referring to believing the evidence provided like the Children of Israel were given evidence to believe God but they rejected the evidence and did not enter the Promised Land
Hebrews 3:7 Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, “TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, 8 DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME, AS IN THE DAY OF TRIAL IN THE WILDERNESS, 9 WHERE YOUR FATHERS TRIED Me BY TESTING Me, AND SAW MY WORKS FOR FORTY YEARS. 10 “THEREFORE I WAS ANGRY WITH THIS GENERATION, AND SAID, ‘THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN THEIR HEART, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS’; 11 AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, ‘THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST.’”
The Sabbath is how we practice getting ready for the coming of the Lord
12 See to it brothers, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “TODAY,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, 15 while it is said, “TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME.” 16 For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.
Perfect opportunity to give the Gospel - Faith in Jesus Christ saves, belief in the Gospel saves and prepares us to enter eternity
Hebrews 4:1 Therefore, let us fear, lest, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have fallen short of it. 2 For indeed we have had good news proclaimed to us, just as they also; but the word that was heard did not profit those who were not united with faith among those who heard. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, “AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST,” although His works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken somewhere in this way concerning the seventh day: “AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS”; 5 and again in this passage, “THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST.”
6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news proclaimed to them failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 He again determines a certain day, “TODAY,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, “TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS.” 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. 9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. 11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall into the same example of disobedience.
