to the beginning of time and the institution of Sabbath - making sure that I communicate that I understand the confusion associated with the day.

Genesis 2.2-3 “And on the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His work which God had created in making it.”

Then I will turn us toward our main text that tells us how to enjoy the gift of Sabbath.

Isaiah 58.13-14 ““If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own desire on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of Yahweh honorable, And honor it, by not doing your own ways, By not finding your own desire And speaking your own word, Then you will take delight in Yahweh, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the inheritance of Jacob your father, For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.”” - Lingering on the delight aspect of yanag that it is by virtue of the Hitpael and intensive and reflexive delight that helps us even understand Psalm 37.4 “Delight yourself in Yahweh; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”

So who supports keeping the Sabbath?

Paul does, Romans 7.12 “So, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.”

Isaiah does - Gentiles who keep the Sabbath and love Yahweh He brings near to Himself Is 56.6-7 ““Also the foreigners who join themselves to Yahweh, To minister to Him, and to love the name of Yahweh, To be His slaves, every one who keeps from profaning the sabbath And takes hold of My covenant, Even those I will bring to My holy mountain And make them glad in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar; For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.””

Nehemiah told the Levites the ones who were in charge of worship to keep the Sabbath Nehemiah 13.22 “And I said to the Levites that they should cleanse themselves and come as gatekeepers to keep the sabbath day holy. For this also remember me, O my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness.”

and passages showing who does not support the Sabbath.

Cheats and liars dont Amos 8.5 “saying, “When will the new moon pass over, So that we may sell grain, And the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, To make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with a deceptive balance,”

Those who elevate tradition over the doctrines of God and over peoples needs Luke 13.10-17 “And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman who for eighteen years had a sickness caused by a spirit, and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. But when Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made erect again and began glorifying God. But the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, answered and was saying to the crowd, “There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath release his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? “And this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for—behold—eighteen years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” And as He said this, all His oppone…”

Address counter arguments

Legalistic (Romans 7.12 “So, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” Isaiah 42.21 “Yahweh was pleased for His righteousness’ sake That He make the law great and majestic.”

Salvation by works (Titus 3.5 “He saved us, not by works which we did in righteousness, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,” , Romans 3.20 “because by the works of the Law NO FLESH WILL BE JUSTIFIED IN HIS SIGHT, for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.”

Fast from the World James 1.27 “Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” Turn off social media, the news, turn off sports - this is God’s day

Eat - The Sabbath is for rejoicing so eat good food that you prepared beforehand

Worship - Isaiah 66.22-23 ““For just as the new heavens and the new earth Which I make will endure before Me,” declares Yahweh, “So your seed and your name will endure. “And it shall be from new moon to new moon And from sabbath to sabbath, All mankind will come to worship before Me,” says Yahweh.”

Then I will use Isaiah 66.22-23 to show that the Sabbath endures to the end of all eternity - this is a type

What is the Sabbath, why is it important

The Sabbath, שַׁבָּת means to rest, it is a creation level ordinance designated by God as a delight

Numbers 15:32–41 | 32 Now the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, and they found a man gathering wood on the sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering wood brought him near to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation; 34 and they put him in custody because it had not been declared what should be done to him. 35 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 So all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. 37 Yahweh also spoke to Moses, saying, 38 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. 39 “And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of Yahweh, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, 40 so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God. 41 “I am Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Yahweh your God.”

Restatement

If because you desire to honor the sabbath of Yahweh, you stop honoring yourself on God’s holy day, delighting in it, honoring it by refusing to make yourself god, by ceasing to look for what you want and speaking what you want...

If you cause yourself to turn - with an intentional act forcing yourself from defiling holy ground with your foot (K&D)

LXX has “turn your foot away from the Sabbath” and “speak a word in anger from your mouth”

Interesting how the audience is speaking but in verse 14 Yahweh “has spoken”

Restatement:

You will pamper and refresh yourself by doing what you were designed to do - delight in Yahweh. He will cause you to enjoy the very best and join you with the people of God. He is totally committed to this and has confirmed it through His revealed Word.

Jeremiah 17:19–27 - do no work then the throne of David will have kings and the city will be inhabited forever if you do not then Yahweh will burn the gates of the city and devour the palaces of Jerusalem

Ezekiel 20 tells us the Sabbaths are a sign between Yahweh and the people of Israel so that they would understand that He is the One who set them apart - v16 the rejected the sabbaths to walk after their idols

APPLICATION POINTS: How to enjoy the Sabbath

Before: In 6 days do all your labor, hustle to get it all done - this is a picture of the coming of the feast with the Lord.

During: Curfew - the order that tells one to come in from being outside at a certain time

Commune - clear the slate and take the bread and the cup with other believers 1 Cor 11.26 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.”

Use your spiritual gifts to serve Matthew 12.5 ““Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and are innocent?”

Rest - Matthew 11.28 ““Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”

Fast from the world - 1 John 5.21 “Little children, guard yourselves from idols.”

Eat - 1 Corinthians 11.26 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.”

Context is referring to believing the evidence provided like the Children of Israel were given evidence to believe God but they rejected the evidence and did not enter the Promised Land

Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

Perfect opportunity to give the Gospel - Faith in Jesus Christ saves, belief in the Gospel saves and prepares us to enter eternity

Hebrews 4:1 Therefore, let us fear, lest, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have fallen short of it. 2 For indeed we have had good news proclaimed to us, just as they also; but the word that was heard did not profit those who were not united with faith among those who heard. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, “AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST,” although His works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken somewhere in this way concerning the seventh day: “AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS”; 5 and again in this passage, “THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST.”
